This essay is about hunger in Delaware and what we can do to help. In order help others, we first need to understand what hunger is, who it affects, and where it occurs.
Now one question you may ask is what is hunger? This is not about when you get hungry and get a snack or eat dinner right as you get hungry, but I am talking about real hunger. Think if you barely had any money to buy healthy food or even food at that. Some people have to worry whether they will get food that day or get enough to eat for one meal. Now you may already know about this but I want you to think critically. Think about people in Delaware. Have you recently seen someone in need in Delaware? Did you help them? If you said no to any of these questions, that is okay. This is just to say that people are out there in your community that need help. Some of these people are impacted daily by hunger.
Now when you think of the word hunger, you probably link that with poverty or someone who doesn’t have much money. That is not always the case though. Hunger could also mean that someone is not getting enough nutrition. For example, someone who is obese might need more nutrition which would also be considered hunger. Also, Anorexia would be considered a type of hunger because anorexic people are not getting the nourishment or food they need. There are many types of hunger out there, but these are some main examples.
Hunger can happen anywhere, whether it is here is Delaware or else where in the United States. It is important to know that this can happen to anyone, and when I say anyone, I mean it. For example, if someone lost their job and couldn’t find another one, they could land in the same boat as someone in need or hungry. Another thing you should know is that being poor does not always automatically mean you are hungry. Some people who are poor still could live a great and healthy life, even if they don’t have much money. Since this essay is aimed towards Delaware though, I will be talking more about the people in Delaware.
Now we get to the side effects of hunger.

Throughout this essay her use of resources and information gives readers insight into a problem maybe they hadn’t known existed here in America. In Janet Poppendieck's “Want Amid Plenty: From Hunger To Inequality” she argues that America puts excessive focus upon hunger issues among the poor when there are many other important issues that go unnoticed. Poppendieck believes that it is time to find a way to shift the discourse from undernutrition to unfairness, from hunger to inequality. In today's society, there are many food banks, food drives, soup kitchens, etc. Food is extremely abundant in America, therefore Poppendieck's statement is proven true when she states that there is too much focus on hunger. Throughout this text, she strongly supports her claims about hunger, equality, and poverty in general.
When a person thinks about hunger, food comes to mind. We never think of hunger as anything else. In Richard Wright's book titled "Black Boy (American Hunger)", a young boy faces many different types of hunger. He refers to the phrase "American Hunger" throughout his book. I feel that the "American Hunger" which he is referring to is the hunger to be considered an American and be treated as an equal. Throughout his life he was treated as if he were from another planet. He was always considered to be different, an outcast and a loser. He felt the need to be a part of the so-called American Culture. He wanted to be able to do what the white children did. He wanted to be able to go to school, to learn, to read, have friends, have a job; but because he was an African American he could not. This is what I will be discussing in this paper his intellectual hunger.
The story “Hunger” is a story with a very clear message. The message of this story is that a person at any age, instead of hiding from his problems, must face his or her problems. In “Hunger”, the reader understands how to make a living and support himself or herself. After the father of the boy leaves him, the boy and his mother had to become the householders. Wright, very clearly, describes the situation of the boy’s family situation. The main characters are the mother and her son.
The United States is known as the wealthiest country in the world. But, there are many people that can't afford to buy food for their families, many are also homeless. “While hunger affects people of all ages, it's particularly devastating for children even short-term episodes of hunger can cause lasting damage."(“Child Nutrition Programs") Child hunger in the United States is caused by poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, and food shortage; however there are many solutions to this problem like FRAC strategies, food banks, summer feeding programs, and backpack feeding programs.

In the novel Black Boy, Richard Wright mantras the word and feeling of hunger many times. Richard is often hungry due to lack of money, which leads to an absence of food. Richard is also deprived of proper education due to the color of his skin and is always yearning to increase his knowledge. In his memoir, Black Boy, Richard Wright highlights the literal and metaphorical meaning of hunger. Through his description of starving for food and thirst for knowledge, he illustrates the daily hardships and deprivation of being black in the early 1900’s.
Imagine your skin tightening around your body to the point that you see your veins, no fats or muscles, the foul odor that comes from your mouth, your eye sockets sunken in, your eyes bulging out, the visibility of your collar and chest bones, your stomach bloated, and your body eating itself. These are the symptoms of someone who is starving. The dictionary definition of someone who is starving or hungry is someone who displays the need for food, the need for calories in their body. This is a feeling that millions of people feel every day because there is not enough food being farmed for them to eat, food is too expensive for them to buy, and because they do not have the knowledge nor ability to grow and maintain their own food. As of 2007, there have been reports that 48.7 million Americans are or have experienced being food insecurity at some point in their life. According to Central California Area Social Services Consortium (CCASSC), it has been reported that 45% of people who are food insecure are not below the federal poverty line (2012). There are many situations that are created for a person to become food insecure. Some examples of how food insecurities are created are issues with job stability, job loss, low or minimum wages, being a single parent, and/or unexpected expenses that can cause families to sacrifice or relocate money for food to pay for bills such as car repairs and medical bills (CCASSC, 2012). Many believed that food insecurity and hunger are the same thing. However, they are two completely different things. Congressional Digest (2010) stated that, “although hunger is related to food insecurity, it is a different phenomenon. Food insecurity is a household-level economic and social condition of limited access to food while hunger is an individual-level physiological condition that may result from food insecurity.” According to the CCASSC, it has been reported that 40.4% of the citizens living in California are food insecure. Unfortunately, as we hit closer to home in Fresno County, where it has been reported that 41.9% of out own citizens are food insecure
There are many policy issues that affect families in today’s society. Hunger is a hidden epidemic and one major issue that American’s still face. It is hard to believe that in this vast, ever growing country, families are still starving. As stated in the book Growing Up Empty, hunger is running wild through urban, rural, and even suburban communities. This paper will explore the differing perspectives of the concerned camp, sanguine camp, and impatient camp. In addition, each camps view, policy agenda, and values that underlie their argument on hunger will be discussed.
Access to food draws a thin line between the privileged and the poor. In Suzanne Collins’ novel The Hunger Games, food has a massive impact on the different characters from the different locations. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist, lives in the poorest district in Panem – District 12. Each different district has a specialty that they use to provide for the Capitol; District 12’s specialty is coal mining. Author Despail explains the districts in a way that makes it easier to understand by stating that “[e]ach outlying district in Panem forms an identity around not only the products the district is known for but also the ways in which its citizens cope with their lack of food” (70). At the end, many people may not recognize this problem and maybe the hunger problem that the United States faces may not be as dramatic as in comparison to other countries, but this is only another reason to find and create solutions to stop hunger worldwide; It’s time to educate ourselves about the causes of hunger in America.
When considering the topic of poverty and hunger, many Americans look outside the borders of the United States. However, food insecurity is an issue that plagues millions of American households each year. The United States Department of Agriculture found that 14.5% of American households faced food insecurity during 2012. These households were defined as having “difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members due to a lack of resources” (Nord, Singh, Coleman-Jensen).
Hunger in america is a huge problem. 15 million children in america face some degree of food absence every day. Without nutritious food a childs future is put at risk. There are three reasons why hunger in america is a problem, one kids who do not get enough food do poor in school. Two is because hunger is connected to poverty. Three is that in genral no one wants to be hungry. My fourth reason is that it harms child development. Those are my three reasons on why we should stop hunger in america.
Hunger is a term that is often defined as the physical feeling for the need to eat. However, the Hunger Artist in Kafka's A Hunger Artist places a different, more complex meaning to this word, making the Hunger Artist's name rather ironic. The hunger of the Hunger Artist is not for food. As described at the end of the essay, the Hunger Artist states that he was in fact never hungry, he just never found anything that he liked. So then, what does this man's hunger truly mean? What drives the Hunger Artist to fast for so long, if he is truly not hungry? The Hunger Artist salivates not for the food which he is teased with, nor does he even sneak food when he alone. The Hunger Artist has a hunger for fame, reputation, and honor. This hunger seems to create in the mind of the Artist, a powerfully controlling dream schema. These dreams drive the Artist to unavoidable failure and alienation, which ultimately uncovers the sad truth about the artist. The truth is that the Artist was never an artist; he was a fraudulent outcast who fought to the last moment for fame, which ultimately became a thing of the past.
