“Legalizing Euthanasia” It might be weird when you hear the phrase “assisted suicide” but you might be more familiarized with the word euthanasia. Euthanasia is the process by which you end the life of a person; it can either be by suspension of medical treatment or by lethal injection. There are two types of euthanasia: a voluntary and an involuntary. The first one applies when the person with the terminal illness makes the decision or a prior request to allow this process to be taken place, rather than doing it without the consent of the other person. In this case it would be called Involuntary (Life & hope network). Euthanasia comes from the Greek words “good death” (Life & hope network). We could infer that it refers to a peaceful and “pleasantry” death. When talking about legalizing euthanasia we should also take into consideration that we will be helping doctors as well. Often doctor are being persecuted and accused of killing people when performing this process by arguing they take their lives away even though they have the patient’s consent. People against euthanasia argue that letting a person die and killing is the same. Lopez 2 People argue that euthanasia devalues life, which for me makes no sense. Because people are being forced to live with pain and suffering when they have other options that in my opinion would be considered more civilized. Others argue that what if the person is not mentally sane to make these decisions. Euthanasia is very delicate and of course serious measures should be taken prior, in order to legalize euthanasia. Laws would be written establishing some parameters or circumstances in which euthanasia would be allowed. It should be allowed as long as the person is aware of what she or... ... middle of paper ... ...er countries (Gurria). Many people fear of becoming a financial burden for their families and choose euthanasia over it. A survey in Oregon, one of the few places where "assisted dying" is legal, showed that 66% of cases the reason for patients' requests was because they did not want to be a burden. (The Life Resources Charitable Trust) Even though those with certain religion reasons might consider euthanasia wrong, I do believe we all have the right to choose how and when to die. If we have the power to and the circumstances are adequate, human beings should be granted to legally use assisted suicide. Not only is it within our rights but, we also deserve to die in peace without being suffering or not even knowing what’s going on around us. As I said before, we also help our family members because we will no longer be a financial or emotional burden for them.
