Symbolism is something that can represent multiple amounts of things is an object or character. In the story A Rose for Emily the rose was symbolism because the rose represents love and secrecy. To Miss Emily Homer Barron represented a rose to her. Homer Barron was her love and a secret to Miss Emily. Miss Emily loved Homer Barron since she had met her but she kept it a secret. The American Flag also represents symbolism it represents our country just like The American Eagle represents freedom for our country. Each color on our flag represents something and the stripes represent each thirteenth colony.
This story has a lot of symbolism. There are lots of symbolic characters and objects. This story is about a woman who was locked up in her house because her father didn’t want her to find love. When her father died people showed up and when they were ready to take the fathers body to bury it she didn’t want them to take his body she wanted to keep his body with her but she couldn’t so and they buried the body in the ground. Later on a guy named Colonel Sartoris said she didn’t have to pay any taxes. Colonel Sartoris never kept any record about Miss Emily not having to pay any taxes so when Colonel Sartoris died later on in life the sheriff told Miss Emily that she had to pay her taxes that she owed and Miss Emily had told the sheriff that she pays no taxes to go see and talk to Colonel Sartoris. Colonel Satoris had been dead for quite a while already but Miss Emily did not know because she had been locked up in her house for a long time. Miss Emily meet a guy and his

She didn’t socialize much except for having her manservant Tobe visit to do some chores and go to the store for her. Faulkner depicts Emily and her family as a high social class. Emily did carry her self with dignity and people gave her that respect, based from fear of what Emily could do to them. Emily was a strong willed person especially when she went into the drug store for the arsenic.
When using symbolism in a story, in a movie or in life in general it helps you understand the meaning of it and lets you get deep inside the topic for a better understanding. Symbolism is a person place or thing that can be interpreted in a different way. A example of symbolism can be related to the religious world. Many people see a tiny edible piece as just another item to eat, but Catholics that attend church see it as a religious piece that symbolizes the body of Christ. You will also see symbolism when you see a navy blue star or when you see a eagle face, a football fan may look at that star as The Dallas Cowboys Team and the eagles head as the Philadelphia Eagles Team.

Sometimes, symbolism throughout a story may not be noticeable when first read, but going back to analyze the text can add a deeper meaning to words and can also help to enhance the meaning behind the story line. On a daily basis, the average American comes across many symbols every day. Symbolism can best be described as a person, place, or object that means something much more than what it is described to be. Colors are great examples of symbolism. The color black symbolizes death and pain while the color grey symbolizes distress and concern. Inanimate object also do present symbols as well. A chain symbolizes a link in relationships while the sun symbolizes spirituality and visibility.
In “A Rose for Emily”, by William Faulkner, Emily Geierson is a woman that faces many difficulties throughout her lifetime. Emily Geierson was once a cheerful and bright lady who turned mysterious and dark through a serious of tragic events. The lost of the two men, whom she loved, left Emily devastated and in denial. Faulkner used these difficulties to define Emily’s fascinating character that is revealed throughout the short story. William Faulkner uses characterization in “A Rose for Emily”, to illustrate Miss Emily as a stubborn, overly attached, and introverted woman.
The story takes place years after the Civil War; the main character is Emily an aristocratic woman who has hardships and trouble all throughout her life. Emily’s family believed that they were better than everyone else and he believed that no man was good enough for his daughter. After her father’s death, Emily began to rebel and do things she knew her father would not have allowed. She dates a Northerner day laborer and kills him, so that he could not leave her. Emily is very stuck up and believed she was better than others. The town people put up with Emily out of respect for her family and she got away with more than she should of.
With every turn of the page, the dark and twisted storyline of “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner leaves the reader in a stronger state of shock and inevitably speechless. Faulkner cleverly uses symbols, characters, and theme to illustrate the inner thoughts of Emily Grierson and the community’s ongoing struggle between tradition and modernism. .
The plot of “A Rose for Emily” shows the later years of the main character, Emily Grierson, with flashbacks to her life interspersed between. It begins with the reader learning of her passing, developing into a story that provides insight in to her reclusive nature and past dealings with family as well as the town of Jefferson. Due to her reclusive nature and high standing in society she is often gossiped about by her fellow townsfolk. Throughout the story, the reader is told about her overbearing father, her reluctance to change her ways for the town of Jefferson, and her new love interest Homer Barron. With hints of foreshadowing and learning about Miss Emily’s past problems with letting her deceased father go, the reader finds the story ending at her funeral with the discovery of the body of Homer Barron kept in her house. Miss Emily did not want to lose her new love, so she poisons him and keeps his body around, letting her maintain a relationship with him even though he has passed on.

Faulkner uses symbolism to help bring out the main points in the story itself and also uses this symbolism to show how Emily is an allegory for the changes in the South during the time of the Civil War. By using the symbols of the rose meaning love or silence, or the hair meaning that over time things change, or even the house, being set back in the old times of the Civil War, symbolism is shown many ways throughout this short story. William Faulkner wrote "A Rose for Emily," in a way where the reader is able to comprehend and interpret the main points in the story in a different way as to where they will be able to look deeper within the meaning of each part of the story rather than having a dull meaning behind everything.
The gray strand of hair found on the pillow next to Homer Barron’s corpse is the next symbol. The lost love represented by the strand of hair is a perverse action of Miss Emily. His use of metaphors prepares the reader for the bittersweet ending. A theme of respectability and the loss of, is threaded throughout the story. Appropriately, the story begins with death, flashes back to the past and hints towards the demise of a woman and the traditions of the past she personifies. Faulkner has carefully crafted a multi-layered masterpiece, and he uses setting, characterization, and theme to move it along.
