How many people today have a smartphone? Some have a smartphone but they don’t use it. Some people use it too much. Suzanne Kane said “the study found that 72 percent of Americans surveyed reported being within five feet of their smartphones at all times and admit to using the devices in other unusual places”. One of the typical examples is the overuse of a smartphone can easily get one’s attention and be distracting. As a result of overuse smartphones, there is an increase in relational, educational, and health problems.
As technology advances, more and more people view smartphones as something that they must have in their hand all the times. The overuse of smart phones has become an addiction. Suzanne Kane reports that a recent study found that, “72% of Americans surveyed reported being within five feet of their smartphones at all times and admit to using the device in unusual places” (Kane). Overusing smart phones wastes time because it pulls the users attention away from what needs to be done. It is now to a point that smartphone saturation among teens and young adults in the US is nearly complete.
Every day, more and more Americans are buying devices to connect to the world which is leading to an increase of relational problems. “Students are spending more time texting instead of talking to people. They simply do not know how to read nonverbal language” (Kane). People are more focused on their device than the person to whom they are speaking. ”Taken a few steps further, smartphones, tablets, laptops and social media often have the potential to tear couples apart (Kerner). In the article entitled, “Our Cell Phones Ourselves”, Christine Rosen describes how cell phones have changed the way we communicate. Rosen tells the readers the main purpose for cell phone use in the past, versus present day. Her purpose is to make society aware of how cell phones have influenced our lives in order to inspire change as to how we view our cell phones. Rosen directs her writing to everyone in the present day by describing the negative results of cell phone use and how it impacts our lives and those around us. In our culture, technology serves as an instrumental aspect of our lives. Regardless of where you turn, you are constantly surrounded by technology. Whether it is our cellphones that spend their entire lives within an arm’s reach of us, our computers, or the newest wave of technology that is moving us towards tablets, much of our life is lived in front of screens. With these advancements comes the notion that there is an application that can solve every life problem we may have. Thanks to technological advancements like text messaging or social media networks, there are plenty of ways a relationship can be sustained for a significant period without personal contact. Unfortunately, most people have a misconstrued belief that these resources are a great substitute for personal time in relationships that have periods of long distance separation. Scientists and relationship experts debate the usefulness of technology in relationships and many do not share the above mentioned belief. They debate if technology helps sustain relationship or helps ruin relationships. Just as social media can be a great way of keeping up with others while they are away, it can also be used to spy on others and assume an intimate connection between anyone who posts on your significant other’s wall often.

It is in your pocket right now, or at least within five feet of you; it is your cell phone. One of the most dangerous distractions to this day. Some look at it every five minutes, some sneak a peek every couple hours or maybe even every five seconds. The thing is, everyone has a little nomophobia (the fear of being out of contact with your mobile phone). How have cell phones affected adolescents in this country? The two texts I have chosen to help me answer this question have the same view, the presentation of the information is just slightly different. The first text is titled “Help! I Can’t Put Down My Phone,” this was written by Margaret Kaminski. This text focuses on the brain inducing chemicals that these cellular devices place in our bodies. It relays its information in a fairly elementary way through the use of pictures, large font and cartoons but is nevertheless, a powerful article. The second article I chose is the “Analysis Of Technology Ownership And Selective Use Among Undergraduates.”
A beautiful commercial, “Disconnect to Connect”, which was made by Thailand DTAC Company, shows that there are many people always focusing on their cell phones. The commercial shows a man ignoring his girlfriend who is walking with him on the beach, another man neglecting his friends who are playing piano, and a father overlooking his children who are playing around. Then, they smile and find the happiness of life after they turn off their digital devices. These things happen constantly around us every day. Nowadays, the functions of digital devices are stronger, and our eyes and fingers contribute more time on it. There is no doubt that the digital devices make our life more convenient and easier because people can connect with each other immediately. Nonetheless, people should not spend too much time on digital devices for three main reasons: having less face-to-face communication, depriving people’s brains of needed downtime, and negatively influencing people’s health.
According to the Pew Research Center at Harvard University, “78% of teens now have a cell phone, and almost half (47%) of those own smartphones” (Pew Research). There is no question that the number of American teenagers that own cell phones is increasing as technology continuously advances in today’s society. So many developments in cellular technology explain why teenagers crave the latest cell phone on the market. Parents of teenagers have to make the decision of whether or not their teen should own the newest phone. Surprisingly, these small portable phones have created a controversy among many parents and pediatricians among America. Some believe that teenagers should have a cell phone to provide safety and assurance to the teens and their parents. Whereas many claim that cell phones are not beneficial towards teenagers and the owning of a cell phone should wait until adulthood. Although some parents argue that cell phones provide teenagers with safety, teenagers should not own cell phones due to the various medical issues and social problems that are linked to teenagers owning cell phones.

In the United States, using a smartphone or tablet has been an unstoppable trend. According to the report from Pew Internet, in the United States, 56% of all adult population is smartphone user, 35% have cellphone, which is not a smartphone, and only 9% do not own any cell phone (Smith). At the same time, the tablet computer has been growing substantially since 2010, especially with the advent of Windows 8. Pew Internet shows that 34% of the United States adult population owns a tablet computer, representing a growth of more than 30% in three years (Zickuhr). Although these reports were based on the adult population, many children their own mobile devices. Such a device will provide them the accessibility to browse the Internet, listen to music, watch videos, play games both instantly and with unlimited quantity.
Mobile phones are undeniable today. Almost everybody has a mobile phone. Formerly, it only functioned as a portable mean of communication. The function of a mobile phone has developed into entertainment. Furthermore, mobile phone has also come into the schools. However, it has both positive and negative effect on students. This essay argues that mobile phones will bring more negative than positive effect for students. Of course, students use it as a mean of communication and sometimes for an emergency call if they need it. Yet, they would use their mobile phones for both bullying and cheating.
