Born to scientist parents and brought up in a society of scientists, I have always had an affinity towards science, in particular, the life sciences. While my childhood was spent dabbling in various activities, be it music, dance, sports, dramatics, quizzes or art, the one constant has always been my deep fascination with biology. This is what led me to choose biology and IT as my two high school specializations. The brief glimpse of what I got in my two years at high school left me in no doubt that Biotechnology Engineering was the field I wanted to pursue in my undergraduate studies. This helped me not only in exploring and understanding the research potential of this field, but also its industrial and commercial applications. Part of what fascinates me most about Biotech is how pervasive it is in our lives, and how indelible a mark it promises to leave on our futures – by harnessing the precision and ingenuity of the master architect – Nature – it opens up an incredible world of opportunities to make our lives better. The past two decades are testament to the increasing importance of biotechnology in our lives, from the production of cheese and wine to the advent of cloning and personalized medicine. I can’t help but think that this field has got to be at the cutting edge of human advancement. As a student of biotechnology, I am fascinated by the tremendous potential of this field and am determined to play a part in its progress. A bit about myself - I am a final year biotechnology engineering student and have constantly maintained a grade of ‘first class’. I’m passionate about the subject, and think that my contemplative and sometimes contrarian thinking will hold me in good stead. I want to do a Masters course in the subject to help me to that path, and I can think of no better place to do it than the U.S.A., the unrivaled hub of science and technology. In the late twentieth century, the field of biotechnology and genetic engineering has positioned itself to become one of the great technological revolutions of human history. Yet, things changed when Herber Boyer, a biochemist at the University of California, founded the company Genentech in 1976 to exploit the commercial potential of his research. Since then the field has exploded into a global amalgam of private research firms developing frivolous, profit-hungry products, such as square trees tailor-made for lumber, without any sort of government regulation.

Many people feel that biology has become more advanced than physics. Biology has in fact become the new focus of the future as we tend to use it a lot in our daily lives. The study of Biotechnology is known as the branch of molecular biology that studies the use of microorganisms to perform specific industrial processes. This study shows that our lives can be transformed.
Science and technology are rapidly advancing everyday; in some ways for the better, and in some, for worse. One extremely controversial advance is genetic engineering. As this technology has high potential to do great things, I believe the power genetic engineering is growing out of control. Although society wants to see this concept used to fight disease and illness, enhance people 's lives, and make agriculture more sustainable, there needs to be a point where a line is drawn.
Synthetic biology, “the aim is to create improved biological functions to fight current and future challenges”. Like all engineering disciples’ synthetic biology is motivated by application to solve specific problems” (3, 7). “Like chemistry biology is the study of living things. Synthetic biology is replicating and recreating nature, which allows it to sometimes control living things (6). Larger quantities of Artemisinin a drug for malaria will be due to the new E coli strain. Thoughts are that it may be able to produce food, optimize industrial processing and detect, prevent and cure cancer (1, 3). Synthetic biology will create DNA that is modified, “it will be able to tweak things”. The engineering component of synthetic biology provides new complex function in cells vastly, more efficient, reliable, predictable” (2, 4). Studies say the synthetic biology industry to grow in value to 10.5 billion dollars by 2016 from 1.6 billion in 2011. Synthetic biology has endless possibilities (7, 10).
Biotechnology is a pathway to many avenues such as disease modeling, drug testing, and stem cell research. Biotechnology is the examination or innovation in light of science, with the innovation and information created when utilising biotechnology we can extraordinarily make life less demanding (Biotechnology Innovation Organisations, 2017). Biotechnology can be utilised to regulate control and intentionally manipulate and alter biological systems for the production of useful products. One of the most important subjects in science is biotechnology. The use of organisms, living systems, or parts of organisms is what biotechnology is all about. Biotechnology involves manipulating nature in order to make systems, products, or environments for human or other species. We can 't argue the fact that biotechnology has played a big role in scientific research, for it has modified plants, humans, organisms, etc. Biotechnology is all around us and in our everyday lives, from the clothes on our back , the chemicals we use to clean them with, the food we consume, the medicine we use to treat each other, even the fuel we use to get to our destination.
This genetic engineering competition is primarily collegiate, and being a high school team incorporates restrictions into our functioning, but this has taught me how to be efficient at organization and improvisation in order to ensure success. Having been introduced to its foundation, biotechnology, I was intrigued by the incredible potential it had towards the advancement of medicine, which stimulated me to pursue additional research in the field. After speaking to former members and the advisors, I was motivated to apply for the program, since being accepted, iGEM has transformed my high school career. I have learned how to apply my rigorous course curriculum towards a bigger purpose to help those in need, which for our current year focuses on an inexpensive mechanism to detect cholera in water sources. This project provided me with a perfect integration of medicine, engineering, and a desire to help those require assistance, and I have dedicated hundreds of hours on our project work towards developing this cause.

Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving.
The structure of the courses incorporated teaching with comprehensive laboratory experience and engineering training programs that enhanced my technical, analytical and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, by working on multiple projects and presentations, my critical thinking, communication and team-working skills got significantly improved. Due to my keen interest in tissue engineering, in my second year I voluntarily joined the Tissue Engineering Lab and began working with Human Mesenchymal stem cells to do cell seeding, fixation and staining. The project involved characterizing cell-matrix adhesion, modulated by changes in the activity of integrins, using Confocal Microscope. Other than that, I was also involved in developing an Electrocardiogram (ECG) device where I designed the hardware components and circuitry from scratch, overcoming all the technical challenges along the way.
To excel in the field of Biology is not merely my dream, but my passion. I have started on this path of never-ending discovery and I want to master this science. It would not be unjustifying to state that the world is a better place today because of the advances in biological sciences. It truly promises to be an ever-advancing profession on this planet where better cures are required for freshly determined diseases on a day-to-day basis. The purpose of this document is to learn about the new and exciting developments in the biotech industry. Besides lives being effected, the companies and the markets in which they reside will be as well. It’s vitally important to learn about the new technologies since there is a very good chance that million’s of others, and mostly likely yours truly will ingest a new drug, or have a new procedure preformed.

The myriad mysteries of science can be unraveled by the emerging technologies including Biotechnology. Science has always been my interest and forte thus, the choice of Biotechnology as my academic option was the ideal decision. I had prepared for the highly competitive entrance exam AIET to get admission into the integrated Masters Degree in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at Dr. D.Y. Patil University and secured 87th all over India rank and was proud to gain admission to this venerated university. The academic curriculum has introduced me to amazing subjects like ‘Microbiology’, ‘Molecular Biology’, ‘Biochemistry’, ‘Genetics’ and ‘Industrial Biotechnology’. Although many seminal biological events have been explained in theory during the past century, the technology to harness their potential for benefiting humankind has only been possible during the past few decades. This is testament to the great improvements in biotechnologies and I am glad to be a part of this grand scientific experience.
