Evolution in technology has merely transformed the world into new era. Technology has evolved from analog telephones to 4G wireless cell-phones in the past decades and I strongly believe that, this pace will remain continuous. Hence, I would like to gain knowledge in this field and it would give me the leading edge in technology and the practical knowledge and information I require.
My post masters goal is to work as a researcher in one of the top universities, here I expect to work on different Embedded Systems. I am willing to work in the field of Microcontrollers and Microprocessor; also would like to enhance my knowledge by acquiring the skills willing to contribute in real time embedded systems and even Custom Designs. How a computer so large and expensive was made cheap and compatible compared to the early thirties is interesting as well as challenging. So I enrolled for diploma in Electronics and Telecommunication not so much to make a career out of it, but to fulfill my desire to get more knowledge. The project that will be examined is an upgrade to our main Human-Machine Interface (HMI) software: Cimplicity, to SQL Server and to the Windows OS. Cimplicity is a product of the GEFanuc group of General Electric. This group develops a full suite of applications used in the manufacturing environment. By way of introduction, the manufacturing floor environment uses a variety of types of equipment. To control these machines, a specialized computer is used. For the purposes of simplicity (not the program), this paper will refer to them all as PLC's or Programmable Logic Controllers. Most of these PLC's are accessible via the ethernet and communicate to our Protocol Data Units (PDU) in the computer room. These PDU's have Cimplicity installed on them in the form of projects that are named for the various areas or functions of our plant such as GA or General Assembly. The project we are undertaking will be a fundamental change to these PDU's in our computer room. The servers currently run Windows NT and will be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 and SQL Server will will be upgraded from version 7 to SQL 2000.
Embedded platforms were initially composed of separate discrete components. The processor was a separate component with just a memory bus interface, and all peripherals were attached to this bus. As integration levels increase, more and more logic is added to the processor die, creating families of application-specific service processors. The term system on chip (SOC) is often used to describe these highly integrated processors. These SOCs include much of the logic and interfaces that are required for a range of specific target applications. The silicon vendors that develop these SOC devices often create families of SOCs all using the same processor core, but with a wide range of integrated capabilities.
