In Leonid Fridman’s passage entitled “America Needs Its Nerds”, Fridman discusses why ‘nerds’ are needed in society. In his passage he develops his argument through comparison. He compares nerds to freaks and athletes to develop his argument that there is something wrong with america’s values.
For centuries those who have revolutionized the world, have been in the category of — what is colloquially known as — nerds and geeks. Recently, the world lost one of the greatest nerds, Stephen Hawking, even though he is greatly respected, there is still a negative stigma surrounding the intellectual community. In Leonid Fridman’s passage, he asserts that the derogatory branding towards the “nerdy” community needs to end. He supports hhis claim by first describing the negative implications the come with the labels of “nerd” and “geek,” then he compares and contrasts, how different regions treat nerds. Fridman’s purpose is to help, “nerds and geeks [from] being ashamed of who they are,” in order to allow for a more progressive society, (Fridman). He establishes a candid tone for an audience who may hold a negative connotation towards nerds.
Capital requirements to set up an assembly line to produce PC's are also relatively low, estimated at roughly a million dollars (Rivkin & Porter,1999 pg. 5) which means that virtually any firm can enter the market easily. Despite sky rocketing demands for PC's, PC producers are unable to capitalize due to increasing number of competitors. The PC industry is also affected by environmental turbulence due to price fluctuations of its components. Constant innovation in PC technology causes older components to be rendered obsolete and prices of older versions to plummet. PC producers who are stuck with inventory of obsolete products incur high costs of dumping these components.

The geeks grew up during the time of “era of options” which meant unlike the geezers, the geeks were about “making history” by being over ambitious and exploring all opportunities, but wanted balance in their life too. Geeks wanted to “change the world” or make it better place to live in instead of focusing on money. Geeks saw many opportunities for jobs and growth, but loyalty to one company was not something they thought about. Geeks said the main feature of their era was speed. “It was the digital world which was nonlinear and had ditched the corporate pyramid for the flat organization (11).” What had taken the geezers 20 years to learn the geeks could do in a couple of
PC industry is affected by two opposite forces: technological advance that pushes the industry forward and the industry sensitivity to economical stagnation (if the economical situation is bad customers won't upgrade their computers).
My report is on the company Hewlett – Packard (HP) which was founded in 1939. I mainly focused on the Personal Systems Group (PSG): business and consumers PCs mobile computing devices and workstations which is one of the major industries of HP. In order to succeed in the business industry a company needs to understand its customer’s needs and create wants for them. HP found out that the customer needed light weight, useful notebook PCs through its Research & Development (R&D) centre. Hence, it created a want; a New Commercial Notebook PC Compaq Evo Notebook N1015v which packs the power and performance necessary for mobility into a stylish design for only $899(US $). HP also finds out about its customer needs through online feedback forms and survey. Via that, HP was also able to understand that not everyone are able to use their products hence it has created this HP accessibility products which can be accessed by anyone including people with disabilities and age – limitations. Example of such product under the PSG industry is the Mobile Speak Pocket which was specially made for the visually impaired people. ( Refer To Exhibit 1a – 1c )

Suddenly the “geeks” were the financially successful, the Bill Gates of the community; reinventing newer gadgets every day. Thanks to our new computerized embedded culture, “geeks” took more pride in the word and altered its usage. In 2001, the London newspaper The Independent published in their writing, “We're the nerds, the geeks, the dweebs: the men and women who can spend 20 hours straight contemplating 600 bytes of obscure, arcane, impenetrable computer code.” The term was no longer a word used to belittle others; now it was the word people used to describe
Sadly, many people refuse to face the onslaught of computer technology. A 1994 survey conducted by Dell Computers indicated the 55% of Americans are phobic or resistant to computers (Column). In addition, many important people, including CEOÕs of major companies, are rumored to be computer illiterate (Column). The former CEO of IBM even admitted to never using a computer (Column). Fortunately, PC’s are becoming more and more user friendly as the technology improves. Fewer errors, less maintenance and quicker functioning should encourage many reluctant people to finally step into the new era.
The government has tried to improve the skill and knowledge of IT in the UK. Due to this effect, the population in the UK may feel more skilled in using PCs, and therefore this impact may increases the use of PCs at home, leading to a greater demand as consumers feel more confident in using them.

Starting a small business is often one of the hardest things a person can do. Some people start a business out of pure fascination, or even as a hobby. Whether starting a business for personal reasons or simply the grandeur to make loads of money, everybody needs to have a plan. Starting a small business is no easy task and can take days if not months to prepare. The most important aspect to have is the tempura and heart to start a small business, as without passion, no business can succeed. One has to be his or her own boss, make dream, reality and be willing to market and sell a product. It takes a lot of discipline, long hours and hard work, something many do not have. However with the right willingness, passion and dedication a business can be the start of something big.
