Chapter 16 of, Social Work, a Profession of Many Faces addressed the women population. It examined the unique sociological problems within the population and discussed its history of discrimination. It discussed the importance of understanding gender roles and social inequality. The chapter highlighted concepts and techniques that are used within the women population One social work concept that should be applied when dealing with the women population is understanding that it is the responsibility of the social worker to assist their clients in the decision making process; It is not the social worker’s responsibility to make decisions for the client. Social workers are in place to provide the client with resources that enable them to obtain their goals. However, it is up to the client to set their own goals and expectations. Often times, women find themselves in stressful situations and look for the easiest solution to the problem. This mind set can translate into the misconception that the social worker is responsible for coming up with solutions to their clients problems. Some women expect the social worker to do the entire problem solving process for them. There are several reasons why this approach is not beneficial to the client. It is imperative for a social worker to understand that a client will not change their behavior until the client is ready to do so. Regardless of the social workers efforts to assist, if the client is not ready to make the necessary changes, they will remain in their self-destructive situations. The client must first want to help themselves before a social worker can began to assist. As social workers it is important that we utilize the various concepts and strategies that been proven beneficial to the women population. Social workers must be informed of the different belief systems and morals that influence our clients in the women population. Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.
Most social workers in North America start their promising career with a social service organization armed with a burning desire to solve a social problem, contribute to society, or anything noble in purpose. They are usually in the forefront in any crusade against oppression committed to a marginalized group. I like this article because it provided issues within moral and respect in Social Work and informs those who are looking into the profession the ethical dilemmas and teaches those who are already in the social worker field a scope of rich information to take into consideration. Most of the current social work clients and workers are women. This gender is also over-represented among women, which implies that women continue to face considerable issues in the modern society despite the changes in the traditional role of men and women in the society. Social welfare policy are usually developed and implemented to confront various issues in the society including the plight of women. However, recent statistics demonstrate that social welfare policy does not always meet women’s needs effectively. A client may expect a social worker of the same gender to agree with their own perspective. For example, in a couple going to marriage counseling with a female social worker, the wife may expect the social worker to take her side, while the husband may expect to receive little support. A social worker could also push how they feel about their gender on a client. For example, a female social worker may not approve of how a female client dresses and expect the client to dress the way she does or did at that client’s age. A client who is from the same culture as the social worker may expect the social worker to follow cultural norms, even if those norms are not in line with the NASW’s Code of Ethics. Through self-reflection of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, I will delve into why I chose social work as a career, the type of social worker I want to become, and ponder what challenges and obstacles may impede my chosen path.
