Social Class Discrimination
Social class discrimination is a negative attitude towards people based on their social or economic class. It is both discriminatory and unfair to people from particular classes and beneficial to the upper class. Social class discrimination has tremendous negative effects on the discriminated classes. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every individual to take some actions to fix this problem.
The first step to bringing social class discrimination to a standstill is by first ensuring one’s beliefs do not label or rub others the wrong way. Therefore, a person should toil to be considerate of others by treating them with respect. Declining to share discriminatory comments masqueraded as humor promotes diversity and fairness. It is exceedingly essential to be vigilant not to upset people from other cltures. Different people interpret words and actions differently. Again, it is vital to tolerate others’ lifestyles. In conclusion, when accused of discrimination, it is important to listen closely and apologize sincerely. People from different backgrounds might understanding as insulting what you intended to be harmless. The author Barbara Ehrenreich is a journalist, who decided to write an article on how it was to live on minimum wage. She stopped her life and began a series of trips across country to gain information for her article, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America.
Nickel and Dimed is a book about the author’s trip into the working poor world. Her profession was as a professor in biology. She noticed similar traits of her studies throughout the years, their struggle with being working poor. This struggled she saw preempted her to create a social experiment that is about how to live as a unskilled, working poor person in America. Instead of experimenting on others she took upon herself to be the one who drives into this unknown world to her. This assignment she given herself wasn’t an easy task and Ehrenreich experiences many conflicting emotions about what she will take on. Before she drives into her social experiment, she create some basic rules she must live by: She has to take the highest pay job offered and do her best to keep it, no relaying on past skills, she has to find the most affordable living conditions in the area she was in. These rules were not easily kept during the experiment and eventual she broke them all at one point or another. She also set some reasonable limits that protect her from going hungry or homeless. Nickel and Dimed On (not) Getting By in America by Ehrenreich. In the book Nickel and Dimed On (not) Getting By in America, the author Ehrenreich, goes under cover as a minimum wage worker. Ehrenreich’s primary reason for seriously getting low paying jobs is to see if she can “match income to expenses as the truly poor attempt to do everyday. ”(Ehrenreich 6)

It sweeps over a large amount of people, infecting most, and most don’t survive. Though today much of the discrimination is gone, just like the plague, but it is still there. Unfortunately for some people, they have to deal with people discrimination from others. Whether it be discrimination of one’s race, age, disability, or gender. Discrimination has numerous damaging effects to someone’s life. In Of Mice and Men the unlucky victims of discrimination also suffer from the same effects. They allow for people to have control of them and walk all over them. Discrimination is like a fire... It hurts.
There are many types of discrimination in the America such as racial, religious, age, disability, and sexual. As college students, discrimination will play a major role in minorities lives as they look for employment or whom they are employed with. Discrimination and the opportunities for promotion are still common even though companies create a safe place to prevent racial discrimination. Racial discrimination is one of the world’s major issues today. Many are not aware on how much it still exists everywhere. A person cannot be born racist and discriminative but only learn to become one as they grow from child to an adult.
Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, published in 2001 by Barbara Ehrenreich, is a book about an author who goes undercover and examines lives of the working lower class by living and working in similar conditions. Ehrenreich sets out to learn how people survive off of minimum wage. For her experiment, she applies rules including that she cannot use skills acquired from her education or work during her job search. She also must take the highest-paying job offered to her and try her best to keep it. For her search of a home, she has to take the cheapest she can find. For the experiment, Ehrenreich took on low-wage jobs in three cities: in Florida, Maine, and Minnesota.
Discrimination occurs when an employee suffers from unfavorable or unfair treatment due to their race, religion, national origin, disabled or veteran status, or other legally protected characteristics. Employees who have suffered reprisals for opposing workplace discrimination or for reporting violations to the authorities are also considered to be discriminated against. Federal law prohibits discrimination in work-related areas, such as recruiting, hiring, job evaluations, promotion policies, training, compensation and disciplinary action. (employeeissues.com, 2006)
Discrimination is defined as an “unfair treatment of a person, racial group, minority, or an action based on prejudice”, it means to “distinguish, single out, or make a distinction between two people” (Gender). There are many ways that someone might be discriminated against in the workplace. Often you cannot pick up a newspaper and read through it without reading about at least one workplace discrimination case. Workplace discrimination can be anything from being treated unfavorably because of your skin color to something as simple as a personality trait. "Discrimination" means unequal treatment. One of the most common elements discriminated against is a persons ethnicity, or their race. This is called Racial Discrimination. While there are many federal laws concerning discrimination, most states have enacted laws that prohibit it. These laws may have different remedies than the federal laws and may, in certain circumstances be more favorable than the federal laws.
