Overall, I found the visual techniques of this film to be fairly basic. Not to say that it was boring or underachieving in any way, but more of a skilled implementation of classic technique. I think that with initial visual impact of stop motion animation, coupled with an intense soundtrack, and the distinctive use of color, the addition of any really abstract visual manipulation may have pushed this film over the edge. In terms of overall visual approach, this film leans more towards the inductive, although deductive scenes are used intermittently as well. Lee, who wrote, produced, directed, and acted in this film, tells the story of an African American community that is filled with racial tension on a hot summer day. The heat takes a toll on the members of the community and tragedy strikes with the death of an African American man named Radio Raheem. Lee uses many techniques in the film, allowing the audience to explore central themes and provoking them to react a certain way. Through the use of mise-en-scene, montage, and camera angles Spike Lee is able to highlight the message of racial intolerance in the film.

High angle shots and low angle shots are used to portray inferiority and superiority. Also, truck is used to follow the contestants in the factory. Most of the cinematography, in fact, consists of similar long takes with very limited cutting to emphasize realism. Dialogue scenes, such as the awkward bedroom interrogation scene between Alex and his flamboyantly cautious social worker, or the turning point when Alex shares his discovery of the Ludovico treatment with the Prison Champlain, feel more tense when shot in real-time. But then there are scenes of excessive violence where montages and hand held camera angles are utilized. During the final scene in the first act, when Alex fights off the Cat-lady, the fight is shot in quick cuts from a hand held/wide angle lensed camera to give the scene a thrilling encounter.
...transition between each stage was flawless. I enjoyed that screens were used to create the background for each scene allowing for the smooth transitions. The screens gave the appearance of being three-dimensional making the scenes seem much more real. I also enjoyed the lighting being used as spotlights during some of the scenes and being used as a transition between scenes, or day and evening.

The director’s unique and distinctive visual style that has focused on the strongest aspects of the conservative society of the countryside in the 1950’s explores the lives of people settled there. Moorhouse has used cinematic techniques of symbolism, cinematography and sound effects in the film to enhance the audience’s engagement.

The release of Gordon Hollingshead and Alan Crosland’s The Jazz Singer in 1927 marked the new age of synchronised sound in cinema. The feature film was a huge success at the box office and it ushered in the era David Bordwell describes as ‘Classical Hollywood Cinema’; Bordwell and two other film theorists (Janet Staiger and Kristin Thompson) conducted a formalist analysis of 100 randomly selected Hollywood films from the years 1917 to 1960 in order to fully define this movement. Their results yielded that most Hollywood made films during that era were centred on, or followed, specific blueprints that formed the finished product. Through this analysis of Hollywood films the theorists were able to establish stylised conventions and modes of production under which a classic Hollywood film was fashioned (Foster, 2008), the film Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) directed by Peter Jackson will be used as a case study to demonstrate these specific conventions.
