The trials and tribulations all humans face becomes prominent as each individual succumbs to evil in attempts of recreating his or her lost civilization. Out of each dark moment the individual faces, flourishes a new state of human consciousness that is consistent in revealing one’s true nature. In the Lord of the Flies, the transition the three young boys make into adulthood is evident as their significance and their newfound identity becomes more pronounced. Simon’s particular incident involves his encounter with the ‘Lord of the Flies’, where he comes to terms with the innate evil that resides within all humanity, causing him to be an ambassador for self-realization. Ralph’s test of faith and leadership comes with the recognition that all the boys are surrendering to evil by joining Jack’s tribe, causing him to represent human beings civilized instincts. Finally, Jack represents savagery, evil and the desire for power through his countless moral clashes with Ralph. Therefore, self- realization arises as the result of each dark moment the individual faces, highlighting their significance and importance in the overall grand scheme of the novel.

A well functioning society has made sure to shape its citizens to exemplify its key principles to camouflage the basic instinct of evil that exists within all humanity. William Golding has placed Ralph in the midst of all the chaos and disorder in the island to personify a more civilized and structured way of thinking. His role in the Lord of the Flies is to provide an adequate picture of what morals and values humans should embody within a society. Therefore, all humans can resort to their basic primitive instinct once all the rules and guidelines imposed by the society are taken away.

Ralph, Simon and Jack are three characters of opposite extremes that strengthen their characteristics through their trials and tribulations they encounter in the novel. This ultimately emphasizes their significance in the process. Their human consciousness has slowly evolved and their true nature is revealed as they overcome conflicts that constrain them. They all symbolize different aspects of humanity. Therefore, out of each dark moment the individual faces, comes self-realization that highlights one’s true character in the process.
