In today’s society looking good is important, especially in the working environment. Every occupation has some sort of dress code for employees to follow. Dress codes can range from wearing suits to gym shorts depending on one’s occupation. Employers decide if the candidate is qualified for the job based on appearance, and then what you wear for the job based on the company’s dress code. The question is can one’s employer dictate what is appropriate dress outside of the job? Employers should only have a say of what one wears while representing the company.
In our society we are not forced by the government to wear specific articles of clothing in public. For example, an Arabic woman must wear an Abbaiya in the public eye whether at work or at the market. If employers are allowed to determine what is worn outside the work environment then we are following this communist tradition. Employees should be allowed to make their own clothing decisions outside of work.
Another scenario where employees should not be in dress code all the time is health care professionals. If a doctor or nurse were to wear their scrubs outside of the hospital many circumstances could occur. One problematic situation is the sanitization of the uniform. In addition a health care professional could be expected to carry out duties and be held liable. Although one would not be recognized as a health care professional in uniform by sight, their oath would still be upheld. Some examples are CPR, Heimlich maneuver, or any emergency situation.

A Company’s dress codes is very important, and it’s not just about projecting a corporate image. Having a work place dress code is a deterrent from harassment, removes the guess work out of what is or is not appropriate work attire, provides a sense of oneness regardless of the diversity of the workplace, and in some instances can also help prevent workplace injuries.
Generally speaking, employers have the legal right to establish dress and grooming code for employees. Some companies requires formal business attire, some companies allow employees to dress down on “casual Fridays,” and others adopt a more relaxed dress code throughout the week. Some employers particularly in the retail sector, require employee to wear uniform’s bearing the company logos or to dress in particular types and colors of clothing associated with the stores. All of these are legal as long as they do not discriminate. A dress code might by discriminatory if it is treated employees differently based on a protected trait or if it has a disproportionate effect on members of a protected class.
The phenomenon of casual dress in the business place has come full circle. Many companies are now moving away from casual dress. Many business leaders have come to realize that the nonverbal signals sent by casual dress, conflict with the image the company is attempting to portray. A trend that was seeing more and more companies opting for casual dress, now has companies considering a complete withdraw from this popular business fashion. Companies will need to completely overhaul their dress codes if casual dress is to survive.

Hoerr starts of with a comment that was made to him about a young girl and what she was wearing. The comment referred to her undergarments. America’s school systems seem to have many issues concerning students receiving a quality education without distraction. A current debate argues weather a dress code policy is efficient or takes away from student’s expression. Administrators at schools should regulate a dress code policy because the system improves discipline and student’s attention, reduces social conflict and peer pressure related to appearance, and dress code provides a more serious learning environment.

Everyone has his or her own individuality, things that set them apart. We use it in our clothing choices, as not everyone wears a hat or a jersey every day.
