Service Description and Situational Analysis C&T Learning is a literacy educational program designed to help children who are below their expected reading levels, for example a 5th grader who reads at a 2nd grade level. C&T Learning will provide a comprehensive learning analysis and approach to the ongoing problem continuing facing some children. The program includes, music, physical education, English, reading, writing, and math. C&T learning will follow an academic curriculum based on current trends to personal lifestyle of the children by encouraging them to read at home, and parents will be playing a critical role in achieving their goal of having every child reading at or above grade level by 2015. Through its marketing strategies, C&T Learning will begin to determine necessary steps that must be taken in order to improve reading levels at the age of 3 and implement throughout high school if necessary. Programs will also be geared toward children with speech and language disabilities, who are far behind. Research shows that children who do not continue reading while at home can lose focus and the progress made during the school year is almost in vain. C&T will primarily focus on minority students through an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). Once we establish the curriculum and support our infrastructure, C&T learning will widen out its concentration on promoting an academic after school and summer program. By offering a high level of service, C&T Learning will focus on the building blocks of reading such as phonics, phonemic awareness, oral comprehension and vocabulary. The Early Literacy Skills Builder is for elementary-aged students with moderate and severe cognitive disabilities who have not acquired print and phonemic awareness. In the Early Literacy Skills Builder (ELSB) all responses have been developed for either verbal responding or nonverbal responding. Nonverbal students may use assistive technology, pointing, or eye gazing to make target responses. Guidelines are offered for promoting active student participation in reading (e.g., saying a repeated story line) and understanding the story. English is a Language that many people struggle with in the U.S. It can be a daunting task that many American’s have to face. Especially because of all of the domains that make up the English Language.(reading, writing, speaking and listening). There are many factors that can lead to the failure of learning of the English Language. One component is English being a secondary language that is not attended to correctly. Even though there is many reasons the lead to English Language Learners lack of proficiency (example Mr. O’Malley classroom), a strong instructional input, scaffolding, theory, research, ELD standard, and a intervention will not be one of them.
Good morning! How many of you think that learning to read and write is necessary for children in order to become successful? Good. We are going to talk about the Reading Recovery Program that is available for students that have difficulty learning to read and write. Nine out of ten children that do not meet expectations in reading and writing in the first grade continue to fall behind in fourth grade. These children are likely to be retained, referred to special education, and drop out of school. With the help of Reading Recovery teachers, children accelerate their learning and meet academic expectations.
For my community involvement project, I volunteered at Memminger Elementary School for a program called “Reading Partners.” The program focuses on helping children build strong literacy skills to carry with them into their academic careers. It requires the tutor to read to the student that has been assigned and in turn the student reads to the tutor. The program assists in teaching the students valuable reading skills. Being able to read is critical to a child’s educational success. The program works with more than 100 schools within seven states. The program is geared toward students of low-income families. The statistics for children’s literacy in the United States are astonishing. “In 2011, just thirty-four percent of the nation’s fourth graders in public school could read proficiently” (National Center for Education Statistics, 2011). The program itself has had exponential success. Principals and teacher have reported that “Reading Partners” has helped increase students’ reading levels. During my time at the program I accumulated twelve volunteer hours.

Mrs. Hamm discussed that she actually uses three different programs to help teach language and literacy to her students. As the human race continues to become progressively more intelligent, countries are becoming more and more competitive in a “race to the top.” Our society, and others alike, have placed increasing demands on citizens in an effort to ensure they go on to be productive, intelligent contributors. While this is a natural progression of the human race, those who were previously struggling to succeed are now fighting to close an even larger gap. When it comes to education, this is a clear and present concern for many educators and students. Teachers are being held accountable for raising the bar and ensuring that each student performs successfully, in accordance with the national (Common Core) standards. A big concern regarding these increasing demands of an every changing society, are students who are already struggling to succeed, such as those with learning disabilities. One of the primary targets of the Common Core is reading, as reading ability is considered to strongly predict whether or not a student goes on to be successful in the education system and in society. In order to service these children, educators have experimented with many research-based interventions in an effort to get struggling students up to grade level and prevent them from being taken out of the general education classroom. The following articles discuss various aspects of a popular research-based intervention, Fountas and Pinnell, and how this interventions benefit students with learning disabilities, specifically in the area of reading comprehension.

While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
Every child deserves a positive, safe, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment where they will grow academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. My role as an educator is to provide my students with this type of environment as well as an education that will help them succeed academically and become life long learners. It is the responsibility of a literacy educator to provide students with this type of environment, but also to provide instruction that will help students become successful readers and writers. There are numerous programs and philosophies about literacy and reading. Through years of experience and research, one begins to develop their own creative approach on teaching these skills. After looking at different programs and seeing the positive and negatives of each, an integrated and balanced approach of literacy seems to be the best way to teach the differing needs of each student.

Oral language skills play a significant role in the development of literacy skills. Research suggests that there is a high correlation between language development and reading comprehension. This is because as student's oral language abilities increase; they become more familiar with the phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic, components of learning language (Farrall, 2012). Additionally, the learning environment is of equal importance and should provide explicit modelling, age appropriate and authentic classroom experiences for developing and encouraging language. Teachers following Cambourne's eight conditions would support an environment enriching language and literacy development (Cambourne, 2001). The acknowledgement of linguistic diversity and suggested differentiation is also worth mentioning. The inclusion of regular planned and unplanned listening and speaking opportunities is vital for developmental progression.
