In Lois Lowry’s novel, “The Giver”, the characters with light colored eyes all have a rare gift; they see the community in a different way. Once Jonas, the main character, becomes the newest Receiver of Memory, he is told that only he and the Giver notice those differences. Jonas, uses the memories The Giver transmits to him to discover the differences in the community and Elsewhere. He learns about past experiences that have been transmitted to him; the newest Receiver of Memory. Jonas wants to leave the community to discover the truth about Elsewhere and what is there. While Jonas’ motivating factors to leave the community are for the selfish reason to experience life, he additionally leaves for their understanding of the past and to give them the ability to love through one another’s burdens. Jonas understands the consequences of leaving the community, but wants to be able to experience colors, pain, and love; which he couldn’t have if he stayed. “If it failed, he would very likely be killed. But what did that matter? If he stayed, his life was no longer worth living” (Lowry 155). Jonas is willing to risk the unknown for the idea of finding Elsewhere for himself. He knows how much he does not fit in with the community and wants to be able to be himself, to love, and to share the memories without being chastised. “He felt, surprisingly, no fear, nor any regret at leaving the community behind” (Lowry 164). Jonas was ready for what was ahead of him; even if he didn’t know what that was. He knows that leaving the community is the best option for him and the people of the community, because they need to know about the world’s past and Jonas wants to be able to experience life to the fullest. Lowry uses “The Giver” to give the reader a connection to make between modern society and the community. As the ending of the inspiring novel could be Jonas dying or any other type of depressing tragedy, the author’s intent could just as likely be for the reader to draw his/her own conclusion. So, as Lowry could be asking “What connection do you make with the community and modern time?” Or “What do you think happens?”, she could just as well be asking “What do you want to happen?”
Jonas, the protagonist, is assigned the job of holding memories for the community. This is so that not everyone has to experience sad or painful memories. The Giver's job is to transmit these memories to Jonas and, in doing so, reveals the wonders of love, and family, and pain, and sorrow to this young boy. Jonas begins to resent the rules of sameness and wants to share these joys with his community. After receiving his first memory, Jonas says, "I wish we had those things, still." (p. 84)

He starts to believe that a world of sameness where no one can decide or make choices for themselves is boring. The novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is an everlasting story that shows the importance of individuality. This novel is about a young boy named Jonas who was elected as the Receiver of Memories, a person who is given the memories from the world that existed before their current society, Sameness. In this society there is no individualism. People can not choose who to marry, or what they want to do for a living. Over time Jonas becomes more and more wise, and realizes that the supposedly perfect community actually has some very dark and negative aspects. The author, Lois Lowry is a 76-year-old writer who focuses her writing on helping struggling teenagers become individuals. Lowry had a very tragic childhood. After both of her parents were separated and killed in the middle of a war, she was devastated and the only way she was able to block and forget all of the horrifying things that were happening, were books (Lowry). “My books have varied in content… Yet it seems… that all of them deal with the same general theme: the importance of human connections,” Lowry explained in her autobiography. The story, The Giver, is an engaging and adventurous tale about a boy named Jonas who learns all about the past and all the things that were taken away to create a ¨perfect¨ society. Lois Lowry published The Giver in 1993 and later on during August 11th, 2014, Phillip Noyce fabricated the novel into a movie. Jonas is an inquisitive individual who is selected as the new Receiver of Memory as his life assignment. The adjustments that are constructed to the original story’s plot and characters made the movie’s visual and understanding more entertaining and exciting for the spectators, yet, some attention grabbing details were kept.
Jonas, the main character in The Giver by Lois Lowry, is a very strong person, which allows him to go farther in life then the people that surround him. Throughout Jonas's life he has known nothing but "sameness". He lives in a Utopian community where there are no choices and everyone in his world has their lives laid out for them. But, Jonas is given the job of "Receiver of Memory". He alone knows the truths of the world, a world with colors, pain, and choices. What he does with these truths will bring obstacles to his life that will show the readers not only his strengths but his weaknesses as well.

Once Jonas begins his training with the Giver, however, the tendencies he showed in his earlier life—his sensitivity, his heightened perceptual powers, his kindness to and interest in people, his curiosity about new experiences, his honesty, and his high intelligence—make him extremely absorbed in the memories the Giver has to transmit. In turn, the memories, with their rich sensory and emotional experiences, enhance all of Jonas’s unusual qualities. Within a year of training, he becomes extremely sensitive to beauty, pleasure, and suffering, deeply loving toward his family and the Giver, and fiercely passionate about his new beliefs and feelings. At the beginning Jonas is naive because he is brought in a world of sameness, but as he receives the memories he gains a sense of diversity. The community is a place where mistakes are not acceptable; everything has to be perfect. Jonas is different but, his difference is useful to the community. When Jonas is named the Receiver of Memory, he experiences the life before sameness. “Jonas learned, through the memories, the names of colors; and now he began to see them all” (122). His gift is part of the reason why he was selected the Receiver of Memory. Without his mentor helping him to learn about and use his gift, life would still be colorless, but now he could see the world in a broader and brighter perspective. Although his job requires him to be secretive and alone, Jonas explores the world outside of the community through the memories that the Giver gives to him. Some of the memories are delightful. “He could smell things cooking, and heard soft laughter.” (154). Jonas experiences the presence of love, family, and Christmas through this memory. Some memories allow you to learn the truth. “His father loaded the carton containing the body into the chute and gave it a shove. Bye-bye, little guy.” (188). Prior to watching his father perform a release, Jonas thought a release was something amazing. He learned that a release is truly murder and he felt betrayed by his father and deceived by the people whom he calls the Elders of the community. When he realized that everyone was being manipulated, he began to create a plan to escape the community so that everyone could have the

The story in The Giver by Lois Lowry takes place in a community that is not normal. People cannot see color, it is an offense for somebody to touch others, and the community assigns people jobs and children. This unnamed community shown through Jonas’ eye, the main character in this novel, is a perfect society. There is no war, crime, and hunger. Most readers might take it for granted that the community in The Giver differs from the real society. However, there are several affinities between the society in present day and that in this fiction: estrangement of elderly people, suffering of surrogate mothers, and wanting of euthanasia.

Memories need to be shared” (Lowry 154). Jonas feels that memories, whether it be good or bad, should be shared with everyone. Furthermore, memories allow the community to gain wisdom from remembering experiences of the past. As for The Giver, The Giver disagrees with how the community runs things. He believes that memories should be experienced by everyone as well, because life is meaningless without memories. The Giver says: “There are so many things I could tell them; things I wish they would change. But they don’t want change. Life here is so orderly, so predictable–so painless. It’s what they’ve chosen [...] It’s just that… without memories, it’s all meaningless. They gave that burden to me” (Lowry 103). The Giver is burdened with the responsibility to not share memories even though that is what he feels the community deserves. In addition, he believes the community lives a very monotonous life where nothing ever changes. Everything is meaningless without memories because the community does not know what it is like to be human without feelings.
