In love, we are told to only trust someone who can see the sorrow behind your smile, the love behind your anger, and the reason behind your silence. In literature, we are told to read between the lines, see the sidelines, and understand the opposing meanings to an author’s words. And while many are able to accomplish these tasks, most fail to apply this concept to all portions of life. In today’s day and age, men and women have developed this horrible habit of simply accepting the assumption and failing to dig deep to find the true problem, or root of the cause. In Edgar Allen Poe’s Bells, the concept of there being more than one outlook present, is shown. Edgar Allen Poe’s Bells, is a prime example of how many things have multiple sides, as opposed to just one. In Bells, Poe speaks of bells and how sometimes the bells bring great joy and times of praise and compassion, however, they also can signify something deeper. In part III Poe writes, “Brazen bells! What a tale of terror now their turbulency tells! In the startled ear of night How they scream out their affright! Too much horror to speak, they can only shriek,” then Poe adds, “What a tale their terror tells of despair!” After signifying the beauty in the bells, Poe also brings the distress of the bells into light. Poe discusses of the horrible ‘terrors’ the bells speak of through their songs of suffering. In Edgar Allen Poe’s Bells, devastating times of grief are expressed through the sounding of the bells. In section IV of Poe’s Bells, Poe writes, “For every sound that floats from the rust within their throats, is a groan. And the people- ah, the people- They that dwell up in the steeple, all alone.” In this passage, Poe is putting the rumors of a... ... middle of paper ... ... Tolkien once made a statement that was pure genius; she said, “Not all who wander are lost.” She made this remark because so many thought that because someone wasn’t on a distinctive track, that they didn’t know where they were going, and this is not true. She stands behind the thought that just because a situation appears to be a certain way, doesn’t mean that it really is. We see Edgar Allen Poe exercise this thought process as well in his poetry of Bells. Poe expresses the idea that maybe the bell that you thought signified life, actually signified death. The smile you thought meant joy, actually means heartache. The frustration you thought was from anger, is actually from love. Maybe the truth is not welcoming, but rather painful. Maybe one day you will remember to see beyond the eye, and realize that the bells symbolize someone’s suffering… Maybe.
Kenneth Slessor was born at orange, N.S.W., in 1901, and educated in Sydney. He worked as a journalist on the staffs of several Sydney and Melbourne newspapers, becoming eventually editor of the paper Smith's Weekly. During the Second World War he accompanied the troops in Greece, North Africa and New Guinea as official war correspondent. In 1956 he became editor of the periodical Southerly. With the notable exception of `Beach Burial', Slessor wrote very little after 1944, the date of publication of a collection of his poetry entitled One Hundred Poems.
The “Tell-Tale Heart” is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe and serves as a testament to Poe’s ability to convey mental disability in an entertaining way. The story revolves around the unnamed narrator and old man, and the narrator’s desire to kill the old man for reasons that seem unexplainable and insane. After taking a more critical approach, it is evident that Poe’s story is a psychological tale of inner turmoil.

Throughout the lives of most people on the planet, there comes a time when there may be a loss of love, hope or remembrance in our lives. These troublesome times in our lives can be the hardest things we go through. Without love or hope, what is there to live for? Some see that the loss of hope and love means the end, these people being pessimistic, while others can see that even though they feel at a loss of love and hope that one day again they will feel love and have that sense of hope, these people are optimistic. These feelings that all of us had, have been around since the dawn of many. Throughout the centuries, the expression of these feelings has made their ways into literature, novels, plays, poems, and recently movies. The qualities of love, hope, and remembrance can be seen in Emily Bronte’s and Thomas Hardy’s poems of “Remembrance” “Darkling Thrush” and “Ah, Are you Digging on my Grave?”
Often times within literary history, authors have chosen to rely on unreliable narrators to add a veil of mysticism and sympathy to their twisted plots. Numerous authors attempt to make the reader believe that the unreliable narrator is in desperate need of compassion and understanding; however, Poe uses unreliable narrators to twist about the reality of the tale just enough to make the reader doubt everything within the story. This technique, employed by Poe in many of his works, adds a layer of mystery and uncertainty that becomes expected within his unique storylines. No author knows “twisted plots” more so than the morbid and abnormal Edgar Allen Poe. In his story, “The Black Cat, Poe uses an unreliable narrator to intensify the story by making the plotline doused with sporadic moments of truth in order to truly create a fine line between what is the truth and what is not.
Edgar Allen Poe shows what really happens when someone experiences anxiety and terror that drives his or her mentally ill when given the obstacles inside his mind. The obstacles described inside Tell-Tale Heart bring the narrator to an ironic end. These hindrances slowly build up to a chilling end for the narrator. This end is drawn out with the beating of a heart that doesn’t go away and reminds the narrator that the old man is still haunting him. The narrator has an idea in his head that he is not crazy and in fact is too calm to be mad and has an ironic story behind it.

'Young Goodman Brown,' by Hawthorne, and 'The Tell Tale Heart,' by Poe, offer readers the chance to embark on figurative and literal journeys, through our minds and our hearts. Hawthorne is interested in developing a sense of guilt in his story, an allegory warning against losing one's faith. The point of view and the shift in point of view are symbolic of the darkening, increasingly isolated heart of the main character, Goodman Brown, an everyman figure in an everyman tale. Poe, however, is concerned with capturing a sense of dread in his work, taking a look at the motivations behind the perverseness of human nature. Identifying and understanding the point of view is essential, since it affects a reader's relationship to the protagonist, but also offers perspective in situations where characters are blinded and deceived by their own faults. The main character of Poe?s story embarks on an emotional roller coaster, experiencing everything from terror to triumph. Both authors offer an interpretation of humans as sinful, through the use of foreshadowing, repetition, symbolism and, most importantly, point of view. Hawthorne teaches the reader an explicit moral lesson through the third person omniscient point of view, whereas Poe sidesteps morality in favor of thoroughly developing his characters in the first person point of view.

The Raven is an amazing poem written by Edgar Allen Poe; a 19th century writer best known for his poetry and short stories. Edgar Allen Poe had an incredibly unique approach to his writing, it can be best described as a personal appreciation for the macabre in tandem with the use of unconventional topics and themes. Edgar Allen Poe creates crafts his unique stories in a way that only he can relate to due to the unfortunate circumstances that surround of his personal life. The Raven opens as a startling and mysterious story through the use of specific words and the inclusion of the door, or rather, the chamber door. The chamber door is important throughout the story as it not only represents a physical barrier between the man and the outside world but, also a symbolic barrier between the man and the Raven; it is symbolic on the grounds that the events of the story do not start until the man decides to investigate the noise. In “The Tell Tale Heart” Edgar Allan Poe builds up suspense by guiding us through the darkness that dwells inside his character’s heart and mind. Poe masterfully demonstrates the theme of guilt and its relationship to the narrator’s madness. In this classic gothic tale, guilt is not simply present in the insistently beating heart. It insinuates itself earlier in the story through the old man’s eye and slowly takes over the theme without remorse. Through his writing, Poe directly attributes the narrator’s guilt to his inability to admit his illness and offers his obsession with imaginary events - The eye’s ability to see inside his soul and the sound of a beating heart- as plausible causes for the madness that plagues him. After reading the story, the audience is left wondering whether the guilt created the madness, or vice versa.
Poe’s themes in his poems and short stories reveal a Gothic look on the world that includes morbid imagery that some people would not be comfortable with reading. In The Pit and the Pendulum, the narrator has to make a drastic decision that not most would have to make: the choice of how to die. Although, the true horror of The Pit and the Pendulum is not just a matter of the choice of death, I believe it is also in the horror of no matter the result, he will die either way. Death in this situation is unavoidable and creates a strain in the human subconscious because of the natural human instinct to want to live. Burduck in his book Grim Phantasms: Fear in Poe’s Short Fiction writes that “of all the emotions by and affecting the mind, feat most intrigued Poe” (5). Poe’s use of fear is seen throughout many of his works and The Pit and the Pendulum is a prime example of this. The narrator in the story is put into an underground dungeon that he cannot get out of. The darkness encompassing him brings a “fearful idea” to his mind and in the dark waves his arms widely about in all dire...
“The Bells,” a poem written by Edgar Allan Poe, conveys a cheerful tone through distinct sounds and repetition of words. A deeply onomatopoeic poem, “The Bells” progresses after every stanza. Primarily, the alliteration, assonance, and onomatopoeia in the poem produce a happy tone; but, towards the end of the poem, the sound devices help establish a gloomier tone. In each stanza, the bells are made of a different metal substance. In the first stanza, the bells are described as silver. In this case, the bells are pleasant, precious, and strong. Moreover, the bells portray the stages in life. The first stanza explains a man’s happy childhood. The golden bells in the second stanza are an example of a man’s love life through marriage. The brazen bells in the third stanza depict the terror of a human’s life through aging, and the iron bells in the fourth stanza show the mourning and death of a human. To fulfill the sense of excitement and happiness throughout the first stanza, Poe uses repeating words and consonants, long vowels, and imitation of sounds. The alliteration, assonance, and onomatopoeia all contribute to the joyful and merry tone of “The Bells.”
