  • Nutrition

Have you ever heard of the saying - ‘You become what you eat’? Nutrition plays a huge role in maintaining a healthy body and mind. Before we discuss any further, let’s define nutrition. The study of how nutrients in food substances react with the body leading to sustenance, growth, health and disease in organisms is called nutrition. The nutrition of a living being depends on the nutrients that are absorbed by the body which in turn depends on the food intake of the organism.

    Nutrition and Balanced Diet

Nutrition involves analysis of food intake, absorption, assimilation, metabolism and excretion. It is nutrition that supplies energy to our body. To stay in the prime of health, our body requires the right balance of different nutrients. This can be achieved by the intake of a proper balanced diet. The food that we eat everyday should have the right mix of following nutrients - proteins, fiber, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals. Eggs, meat, lentils etc have an abundance of proteins. Green vegetables are an excellent source for fiber. A balanced diet also keeps the number of calories in check. It is said that women require upto 1500-2000 calories a day whereas men need 2000-2500 calories everyday. But sadly, our unhealthy eating habits leads us to consume excessive calories, and the food that we generally eat has a disproportionate ratio of nutrients.

Having a balanced diet with the right mix of different nutrients is essential for good health. A food in which nutrients are preserved from oxidation, heating and leaching is considered to be a healthy diet. Malnutrition is the intake of food with too little or too much nutrients leading to diseases and other health problems.
