Cryptids
A Cryptid is a creature or even a plant that’s existence has been suggested but has not been discovered or documented by the scientific community (Wikipedia.com). Cryptids are known to be part of legends, old wise tales, and mythology. Cryptozoology is a pseudoscience that involves the search for animals whose existence has not yet been proven. This kind of search includes searching for animals that are said to already be extinct. Cryptids was term made by John Wall in 1983 who sent a letter to the International Society of Cryptozoology. The prefix of “crypt- is Greek and means “hidden”(Wikipedia.com) The stories of these animals that I will be talking about include Bigfoot.
The science community has separated themselves for cryptozoology do to the fact that the evidence that is provided is weak, and wouldn’t hold up against the scientific research. Still some scientists can’t completely dismiss the claims that there are animals that there are specific cases of animals that have gone unrecognized by science (Wikipedia.com). There is a classification system that George M. Eberhart part of the American Library Association, who has written for the Journal of Scientific Exploration. This written piece for the journal discussed how difficult it was to categorize the media materials about fringe science. The classification system that Eberhart came up with has 10 types of mystery animals under the crytozoological umbrella (Wikipedia.com). The classifications are as followed and are found in his book called Mysterious Creatures. 1. Distribution anomalies, animals known as animals reported outside their normal range. 2. Undescribed, unusual, or outsized variations of know species. 3. Survivals of recently extinct species. 4 Su...

The series is also referred to as the “Marty and Grace” series, as the series stars two thirteen year old twins Grace and Marty O 'Hara who lose their parents after they get in an accident. Their parents left to work on an assignment for a magazine that focuses on nature.
Question at Issue: Is Bigfoot simply a legend, or is it just an elusive freak of nature?
...however, with further research, it came to light that this was not just a “unique species” but an entire phyla that was new to science (Adler 2013). Why a new phyla? “What made the creatures seem new is they have no living descendants. They represent entire lineages, major branches on the tree of life, left behind by evolution…” (Adler 2013). While other lineages did survive-actually a collateral predecessor of the vertebrates, and that means us! (Adler 2013).
“ The hunters of this creature know well the existence of Bigfoot, which are too rare to be nuisance to farmers and present only the mildest of dangers to the hunters themselves.” The worldwide fame of the Bigfoot started by the activities of mountaineers this century who have told everyone about its existence. The evidence for the Bigfoot’s existence has so far not been sufficient enough to convince most scientists. Many believe that pranksters have faked some evidence, which includes
Bigfoot is one of the most well-known and controversial urban legends in the world (Pekinois). There are many different arguments to prove that Bigfoot does and does not exist. There are some unexplained phenomenons that may give hope to the possibility that Bigfoot is real but most evidence of Bigfoot can be proven to be something else and just because there is no explanation now that does not mean there never will be one.
While many theories exist trying to disprove the existence of this elusive beast, many also exist proving its existence. The first reported sighting made by St. Columba, an Irish missionary, in the a.d. 500s. He was from Scotland and came to spread Christianity. He saw the beast attacking a man and saved him by making a cross and ordering the beast to be gone. The Loch Ness Monster is not just a beast from the Medieval mythology. Many people have reported sightings of a creature matching the description “of an ‘extinct’ dinosaur called the Plesiosaur”(“Myths and Legends of the World”). There have been many attempts to find this elusive creature ,but all have turned up unsuccessful neither proving nor disproving the existence of the Loch Ness Monster.
... are minds are playing tricks on us and that we assume were seeing the creature. But, the funny thing is that years before her article came out Radford wrote one on Bigfoot too. It also states in the article that throughout the world there hasn’t been any blood, bones, or bodies ever found.
Arthur Grant, a veterinary student in 1934, was heading home around 1 A.M. He saw something lurking in the bushes, and it immediately bounded onto the road. He swerved and stepped on the brakes, barely missing contact. The headlight was on the 20 foot long creature that had an eel-like head and large humps on its shoulders. What is this creature? Does it even exist? These are the questions many cryptozoologists ask on a daily basis. Cryptozoology is the search for and study of animals whose existence is disputed. While many disregard cryptids, the term for these mysterious animals, there are scientists committed to finding the truth. Though there are many fascinating creatures in this field, the three most news-worthy are the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot and Dracula.
Animals that are commonly known as pets like dogs, and cats altogether account for less than 0.2% of research animals. Most of the research and experiments are done on mice, rats, fish, and birds animals that are not commonly known as pets. Animals usually end up killing more animals every week than what the tests and experiments kill every year.
Bigfoot’s existence can no longer be denied. No longer is it a question of Bigfoot being real, but rather a question of man’s capability in being able to believe the truth. The facts cannot be mistaken. Besides being seen time and time again, video footage has been collected. This alone is enough to make many believe, but for the rest, the physical evidence is unmistakably real. As the theory progresses, more and more credible researchers come forward to show support in such a creature’s existence. They do this at the risk of losing their own credibility. None, however, are capable of an explanation for Bigfoot’s uncanny ability to remain hidden from human observation, the nature of which remains to be a question. Perhaps, though, as more and more people start to believe in the truth, questions will be answered and the mystery solved.
There is lots of history and many old stories about hairy human like creatures, The oldest of them was from almost 2000 BC and were written on clay tabs and were found in Babylonia. The next earliest found was in 500 BC with ancient carvings and traditions in the ancient Greek and Roman empires (Bigfoot Facts, 2012). Later you then see myths of hairy creatures in medieval Europe. In the European myths the hairy creature does not have horns or a tail and more closely resembles the bigfoot we know today. Bigfoot has been a myth and a traditional part of folklore for centuries, but real sightings of the creature have only started from the early 1800s. Stories and sightings then became ...
For over a 150 years man has been troubled by one great mystery, a mystery that has baffled all who have witnessed it and all who have tried to solve it. This mystery is commonly known as Bigfoot, a tall hairy man/ape who lurks in the woods in almost every country on this planet. Some say it is just an ape, some believe it is a man in costume, and others are true believers of this hairy phenomenon. For more than a decade and a half this creature of myth has caused enormous contradictions in the field of science, bringing about one question. Does Bigfoot exist?
Maybe, one time you were camping in the woods. You saw something, lurking in the woods. You saw something unlike anything you’ve ever seen before in your life. You think it looked like the legendary Bigfoot. You know, the one you watched those Animal Planet shows on. You didn’t really believe what those guys were saying. You thought those guys were just talking crazy for thinking it was real. Maybe one time, you were on the lake. You saw something that looked like a log, swimming across the lake. You thought nothing of it. You didn’t think it might have been the Loch Ness Monster. It could have been the one they have the History Channel documentaries on. Maybe you saw a coyote looking thing attacking a farmers goat. You didn’t think much of it, thought you would be crazy to think it was a supposed “Chupacabra”. Cryptid animals have been a big part in American culture, from making TV shows about them to being a cultural phenomenon.
For the first known citing of one of these creatures, you would have to go back to November of 1861, when crew members of the French dispatch steamer Alecton spotted what appeared to be a large sea monster off the coast of the Canary Islands. The crew threw harpoons at the creature, but those would not stay in the flesh for long. When the crew got close enough to put a noose around the creature, the rope tightened and cut through the animal, causing most of it to sink to the bottom of the sea. The crew, however, managed to pull the tail of the creature on board, and bring it back to the French Consul. From there the tail and a report about the creature made its way to the French Academy of Sciences.
The Fear of Science To live in the today's world is to be surrounded by the products of science. For it is science that gave our society color television, the bottle of aspirin, and the polyester shirt. Thus, science has greatly enhanced our society; yet, our society is still afraid of the effects of science. This fear of science can be traced back to the nineteenth century, where scientists had to be secretive in experimenting with science. Although science did wonders in the nineteenth century, many people feared science and its effects because of the uncertainty of the results of science.
