Same-sex marriage should not be illegal in the the United States for several reasons. Firstly, the United States was founded on principles of freedom, and equality. Laws prohibiting same-sex marriage discriminate against same-sex couples, as they deny them the many benefits that accompany legal marriage. Secondly, there are no valid, rational arguments against same-sex marriage from a legal point of view, therefore its illegality is baseless. Thirdly, the legalization of same-sex marriage would likely actually be beneficial in many of the circumstances in which it is claimed to be harmful, such as adoption and fidelity. Any of these reasons alone should be enough to bring about the legalization of gay marriage in every state, and together they form both a comprehensive testimony for the allowance of same-sex marriage, and an incontestable defense against its opposition.
“The fourteenth amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America states that ‘All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws’” (Cornell). As an American citizen, a person should be entitled to marry whoever they choose, regardless of gender or sexual preference. Gay marriage is something that some people consider to be taboo while other people are very supportive of it; I am one of the latter. The ability to marry someone is a basic human right and it should not be taken away from someone because they love a person of the same gender. One of the main reasons that gay marriage is illegal in the United States is because of what the Bible says about it, regardless of the fact that the first Amendment of the US Constitution says that there is to be a separation between church and state. Have you ever imagined how a person feels when he/she is told that they cannot spend the rest of their life with the person they love? One is completely in love and they want to get married because, the law does not allow them. One is denied the legal rights that come along with marriage because he/she is in love with a person of the same sex. Unfortunately, these are some of the challenges that lesbian and gay partners get in many nations. And the sad thing about this is that, most of the arguments offered to keep same sex marriages are flawed and reactionary, and based on nothing other than ignorance, fear, prejudice and bigotry. Same sex marriage is a marriage between people of the same sex. Same sex marriages are currently illegal in the US except for a few states. The illegalization of same sex marriages is wrong because, it is a prominent form of prejudice. Same sex couples are not only denied their civil rights, but also their legal and economic benefits. No state should prohibit a person to show their love to another person because of gender because; it does not uphold the fundamental principles of the constitution.
Homosexuals, targets of discrimination and social injustice, deserve to have equal opportunities and rights as every other person in America, homosexual or straight. Homosexual marriages are accepted already by the Constitution, and they offer nothing but economic and social benefits if legalized, therefore there is no real reason as to why homosexual marriages should not be legalized.

Gay marriage is a matter of civil rights. Jennifer Hamady wrote, “Marriage, as an institution, has evolved greatly throughout human history.” Not long ago, marriage implied having stay-at-home wives, with the male being the “bread-winner” but this is no longer the case. Marriage has evolved to not only being a more equal union but also, many women are taking the role as the primary earner. Same-sex marriages should be legalized in the United States. This country has steadily opened the minds of Americans to the meaning of equality and freedom evidenced by allowing blacks and women to vote and allowing interracial marriages. The time has come to get past the false assumptions and unsubstantiated arguments. It is time to understand that religious beliefs need to be separated from the state and to legalize gay marriage. As of today 14 out of 50 states allow same sex marriage, all other 36 states have banned same sex marriage or doesn’t have any laws against it or for it. For years same sex couples have fought for their right to be able to get marry, and for years they have been shut down due to many reasons: religion, traditions, it’s abnormal, it’s not natural, it defeats the concept of marriage, children needs both a male and female role model in their life to be successful and many more.
Everyone deserves the right to marry and be with who they want. One of the arguments people use against same sex marriage is that it would negatively impact heterosexual marriage. It’s hard to comprehend how same-sex couples getting married would affect heterosexual marriage. Already today in the US the divorce rate for opposite sex couples is 50 % (Kellard). There is no constitutional basis for denying same-sex couples the right to get married. In fact the 14th amendment to the constitution supports that same sex couples should be allowed to marry (Kellard).
Same sex marriage should be legalized. Gays and lesbians deserve to have the same rights in their unions as heterosexuals have. It is important to legalize same sex marriage because:
Today’s society argues widely the correctness of same-sex marriage. Marriage for many people is believed to be a relationship between two people, preferably man and woman. The LGBT community battles for their right to marry without being denied by the government. The legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States has great importance for the future of marriage equality throughout the LBGT community. Same-sex marriage will not harm the function of society or other marriages in it, as well as being protected by the Constitution, and relieves lifelong discrimination.
