The book opens with the story of Oscar as a child and him having two girlfriends at the same time. The older people in town see him as a ladies man and encourage him. The boy and the two girls all break up and his life seemed to be on a steady decline since then. He grows up to become a nerdy, fat, and awkward adolescence with few friends and even less interest from girls. This phase persists throughout his life and he never develops out of the nerdy boy he was as a child. The Dominican Republic was a hostile and poor place during the time of the novel. The dictator Trujillo controls the lives of the people in the country. This influenced the de Leon family’s present and future. Diaz develops the story by using the superstition, the cane field, and male dominance of the Dominican men

Part of the trepidation Kelly had when being contracted with MGM Studio was because of his background. Kelly famously and sincerely asked, “Who wants a choreographer from Pittsburgh?” (Brideson, 2). Despite Kelly’s questioning of his own belonging as a hollywood choreographer, his roots are what made him unique. His claim to an unrefined, gritty, and unglamorous upbringing is directly translated into his dancing and his character. Whereas someone such as Fred Astaire was the pinnacle of upper-class dignity in his coattails and bow ties, Gene Kelly brought what he felt made him what he was into his career. Gene Kelly would not be caught in a tuxedo if he could help it. He rather preferred to dress casually and in a style that reflected where he was from, just like how the way he danced was a reflection of the city of

...s appeared not so much to matter as the fact that he developed new techniques, devised camera approaches and sought always to bring out the potential of a still developing form. That he forgot--or overlooked--to bring the Marxist message to one of his films two years ago brought him that fatal kiss of all--the accusation from the authoritative Soviet magazine, Culture and Life, that his productions had been short on the prescribed Soviet requirement of art and interpretation of history” ("Sergei Eisenstein is Dead in Moscow”, New York Times, 1948) . In film, Eisenstein was known for his development of the montage sequence, his unusual juxtapositions, and his life-like imagery. Billy Wilder’s “Sunset Boulevard” is a 1950’s film about famous, but forgotten, Norma Desmond, a silent film star, who has been living in exile, in her gloomy rundown mansion. Desmond spends her time watching her old films, dreaming of the day when she makes her grand comeback. Gillis agrees to help Desmond edit her script, that she’s been working on, soon their relationship goes through twist and turns. Swanson, who plays Norma Desmond, gives a great performance with stellar acting; her theatrical mannerisms were perfectly executed. Holden also does a great job counteracting Desmond’s delusional rants. His character is well balanced, and at times is the voice of reason. The film is not only a love story, but also a story about redemption. Overall, the film has beautiful cinematography, great dialogue, and amazing a...

In the years of 1952 and 1950, Hollywood released two incredible films; both films incorporate many of the same elements, just shown to different sides. Both films surround the shift in film technology from silent films to talkies. The first, Singin’ in the Rain, surrounds a film studio thrown into the midst of talking films. Stanley Donen created a lighthearted musical which showed how the transition was not as easy as it seemed. The film industry was not only about looks and actions anymore, it became about voice and its usage on-screen. This shift led to the downfall of certain actors and actresses who could no longer hold their own. The second, Sunset Boulevard, presented the idea of what happens to these actors, or in the case of this film, actresses, who were proven to not hold their own. Surrounding a young writer and a washed up silent film actress, the film showed the madness of an actress who believed her career ended much too early.
