The Role of Censorship

Censorship plays a huge role in today’s society. Censorship effects society in excellent ways by putting a blind fold on certain types of media, language, and other social values that should not be seen by all humans. Censorship is known to many as being listed under the category of moral. Censorship is moral, because it bans certain books from schools that should be banned, it helps parents keep their children from material they should not be in acquaintance with, and is politically correct for society and students due to its ethical values. Censorship is effective in many ways and should be used regularly due to its effects on students and society.
First, censorship bans certain books from school systems because of their language and numerous other attributes. Books have many different plots and conflicts throughout them. To me, books that have sex, vulgar language, murdering, rape, or any other adult situations should not be accessible in the school systems. A book that should be banned would be The Catcher and The Rye by J.D Salinger. This book has numerous adult language and sexual situations for a young child to read. The Catcher in The Rye is a remarkable book to read and has incredible meaning but is too vulgar for young children in the school system to read. A specific example would be on page nine of the book where it states, “I don’t give a damn, except that I get bored sometimes when people tell me to act my age” (Salinger 9). I would not want my child exposed to that kind of language. I could not imagine my child asking me what the word “damn” or prostitute means, which is also stated in the book. Censorship is precise by protecting students and society in various effective ways. If it was not for censorship we would not be accountable for protecting kids’ minds. After all, censorship has more pros than cons and is essential in everyday life through the protection it supports for society.
