Roger Allersand and Rob Minkoff directed the animated Disney movie, The Lion King. The particular song I will be discussing, “Circle of Life,” composed by Elton John and scored by Hans Zimmer, plays at the very beginning of the movie and serves as the introduction of Simba to the animal kingdom as well as to the viewing audience. The scene starts out with a sunrise and then cuts to numerous different camera shots of animals from all over the animal kingdom including rhinos, meerkats, cheetahs and others. They appear as if they are all heading towards the same location, which is then shown as a plateau that is being over looked by a mountain ledge. The focus then moves to baby Simba who is being prepared for an introduction to the rest of the kingdom. Simba is then thrust towards the heavens, which leads to the other animals celebrating wildly, and then the scene ends. Throughout this paper, I will show that the texture of the music, through the use of different musical techniques, is essential in creating the particular setting and mood of this scene.
The abstract idea of life cannot be explained by such simple ideas as being animated, breathing, or speaking. Ordinary machines in this century can perform all of these basic functions. The quandary with defining death is not as abstract and elusive as that of life. The problem of defining life and death has plagued philosophers and the religious bodies for thousands of years for one reason; each philosophy or religion has tried to define the meaning of life and death from only their certain perspective. The seemingly appropriate approach to this problem would be to understand the ideas presented in various philosophies and religions and through this knowledge create a new definition for each idea of life and death. The movie Blade Runner has taken this exact approach in its attempt to finally define life and death in a logical and un-spiritual manner. By taking the position that death is a concrete idea that can be explained, Blade Runner accomplishes the task of interpreting the idea of life in terms death. Through this approach, the meaning of life is redefined to accommodate for the existence of the replicants. Also, as a result of this novel notion of life, it is apparent that humans and replicants never actually live, even though they are alive.
The miracle of life is something most of us will experience in our lifetime. The process before actually giving birth, I think is the hardest part of the entire scenario of child bearing. This amazing experience is something that can make the individuals who are involved in the process change in so many ways. The process of giving birth, for those of you who have not experienced or will never experience it, can be very hard, long and rewarding all at the same time. To give a better description, think of eating a fireball. At first the fireball is tame and calm, but just when you least expect it the fireball becomes hot. Then, when the hot sensation becomes too much, the sweet flavor of the fireball breaks through.
Age is but a number. A number that classifies, organizes, and can even define someone. It holds opportunities to learn new things and determines when the path into adulthood begins. The linear notion created by steadily increasing numbers is a very narrow outlook on age. It assumes that as someone grows in age, they are changing both mentally and physically. This, however, is far from the truth. Age is beyond the numbers; it is what lies within. When numbers are disregarded and the qualities attributed to each phase of life is examined, a sequence of repetition can be observed. Instead of growing old, it can be seen as regressing to adolescence. The two outliers of life, infancy and elderly, are far more similar than any numerical value could ever project.
Viktor Frankl said, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing; the last of the human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given circumstance, to choose one’s way.” I support this quote because if something doesn’t go the way you want it you could either look at the bright and spirited part of it, and make things better, or look at the dull and awful part of it, and make things worse. If it were me I would always try to look at the bright part of it, especially since you are the one who chooses your own perception and outlook on life. That is why you should think of it like this; do you want your perception on life to be tremendous and wonderful or dreadful and horrific.
