Early Years
* Richard Phillips Feynman was born May 11, 1918 to Melville and Lucille Feynman. His sister, Joan, followed later, March 31, 1928.
* Richard's life was charted for science before he was even born. Melville decided while the child was still in the womb that if the baby was a boy he would grow up to be a scientist. Richard, in fact, was a boy and his precocious young mind caught on quickly to his father's earliest scientific teaching. His father's practice of teaching Richard to ask investigative questions began a lifetime devoted to the wonder and mystery of the universe.
* It was this process, learned early in life, of questioning and observing, the classic scientific method, that Richard credited his discoveries by. As he stated in an address to science teachers in 1966, " I think it is very important--at least it was to me--that if you are going to teach people to make observations, you should show that something wonderful can come from them. I learned then what science was about: it was patience. If you looked, and you watched, and you paid attention, you got a great reward from it--although possibly not every time. As a result, when I became a more mature man, I would painstakingly, hour after hour, for years, work on problems--sometimes many years, sometimes shorter times; many of them failing, lots of stuff going into the wastebasket--but every once in a while there was the gold of a new understanding that I had learned to expect when I was a kid, the result of observation. For I did not learn that observation was not worthwhile (What Is Science?)."
* In high school, Richard's aptitude for learning was most evident. He excelled at math, building a solid foundation for his physics career ahead. In fact, he won first prize in the New York University math competition in his final year in Far Rockaway high school (Wikipedia).
* After high school, Richard continued his education at Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduating with a degree in physics in 1939 as well as receiving the pretigious Putnam Fellow reward (Wikipedia). As an undergraduate, Feynman took every physics course offered at the university. He then continued his education, moving on to Princeton to study for his Ph.D. Once again, Feynman showed his facility with all things mathematical, receiving a perfect score on the mathematical and physics portion of the Princeton entrance exam.

He was never a president of the United States, nor did he lead any army in a battle. He had no talent in public speaking, preferring to write out his thoughts on paper and for them to be read aloud by others. Yet in his day he was certainly one of the most well known celebrities, beloved in both the United States and through most of Europe. He is Benjamin Franklin, and he has become a symbol of American civilization.
Richard attended fullerton high school in california but later made a transfer to whittier high school. He ran but lost for student body president in early highschool. He also graduated second in his class. Nixon was a "standout" in Whitter community college. He was a pretty good athlete too. Before going to Whittier college, he had a scholarship to Harvard University but his family didn't have enough money to pay for the expenses of traveling to Harvard.

The middle of the twentieth century was clad in scientific advancements that opened up the realm of our universe to the world. At the head of this exploration was Carl Sagan, a pioneer of sorts. Aside from his countless contributions to the scientific community, he backed a new understanding of the cosmos to the more pedestrian population of the world.
Dr. Stephen Hawking is one of the most recognizable and influential scientists since Einstein. He was born on January 8, 1942, 300 years after the death of Galileo. As a child, he was always interested in science. He spent many days and nights looking up at the stars or making fireworks with his father. He also spent time making complicated board games with his friends (McDaniel 26-28). At the age of eight, his family moved to St. Albans, where he was enrolled at the St. Albans School. Although Hawking was not the best student, he went on to Oxford University in 1959, where he graduated with a degree in natural science three years later (Hawking 1). That same year, he went to Cambridge University to pursue his Ph.D. in cosmology, but was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) one year later, in 1963. This prompted him to work harder at his schoolwork, as he was only given two years to live. In 1965, Hawking married Jane Wilde, an undergraduate student majoring in world languages at Cambridge University. He became extremely interested in the work of Roger Penrose, a cosmologist who had just explained how black holes begin from collapsing stars (Biography.com 17). In 1974 Hawking made the discovery of Hawking radiation, which escapes from black holes. This is one of the most recognized and revolutionary discoveries in cosmology. Dr. Stephen Hawking positively changed the world scientifically and socially, despite being crippled by a deadly disease.
When HG Wells was thirteen, his parents took him out of school to become an apprentice. After a few years, he had helped teachers in and around classrooms, and received a great education. One of his favorite subjects growing up was science. After he had studied hard enough, he earned a scholarship to the Normal School of Science, where he attended for college.
The body of this argument lies in a meager psychoanalysis of Melville. I have had to take a very broad approach, look at Melville purely as a man. I have attempted to put the reader into Melville's head, where I have attempted to put myself. To better achieve this I discuss much of Melville's background, hoping to give the reader a sense of what he had experienced. I have written with confidence, but hopefully not too much, you must decide for yourselves what of mine you feel is right. It is always very hard to use psychoanalytical approaches, because, as the mind is a mystery, it is all ultimately unproved. All psychoanalytical opinion is based on event, as all psychology is based on the idea that men are shaped by experience. I speculate below, on things I cannot really know, and I do this only to achieve some rough personal connections between Melville and his Moby-Dick. It serves me, and I hope you as well.
