The Rewards and Challenges of Teaching
The desire to influence young children ranked the number one reason why students enter the field of education (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, p.5). As an educator, there are numerous rewards that come with the profession, along with challenges that can influence instruction. A positive environment, personal development and being a role model are rewarding aspects of the teaching profession that make diversity and the complexities of teaching not only manageable, but a more gratifying experience.
One reward that the teaching profession generates is a positive and energetic environment. Dealing with a multitude of problems and juggling an array of tasks in a small increment of time may seem tedious, but the fast pace environment deters from a stagnant and monotonous occupation. The intangible rewards, such as the variety of personalities within the classroom along with the memorable things students’ say and do, promote a positive and lively atmosphere in many classrooms.
Developing personally while contributing to society is another reward that comes with being a professional educator. Being a teacher not only influences students, but also “…provides opportunities on a daily basis for personal and intellectual growth” (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, p.7). With experience, an educator adapts to the environment, acquires beneficial teaching skills and implements knowledge for future generations to retain and apply. Teaching is a learning experience that not only contributes to society, but also reaps emotional and intellectual rewards that increase teacher-efficacy and personal development.

Experience and collaboration are essential to teaching and, by persevering, every educator can benefit from each role the profession demands.
All in all, the rewards of being an educator far outweigh the challenges. And, when a challenge to instruction arises, an effective educator can still profit by adapting and learning from the experience. Being an educator is a learning experience that contributes to individual development and, most importantly, makes a lasting impact on society and the lives of young children. Being an advocate for future generations and making a lasting impression is the greatest reward that triumphs any challenge an educator faces.
The first reward is my desire to work with young people. I want to interact with young people and help them learn and develop. Teaching is a satisfying profession. A national survey suggests that teachers as a group are satisfied with the profession and their level of satisfaction has increased in the last 25 years (Introduction to Teaching, 2007, pg. 5). Being able to help in shaping our young people gives one a great feeling.
Over this past summer I’ve worked at a recreational park mentoring young children. I was still determining what major I wanted study upon college move in day; I was clueless. A week before dispatch, a girl wrote me a letter. It read “Dear Mr. Christian, Thank you! You are making a great impact in our community. Sincerely, Madison” after reading the letter it inspired me; I realized teaching was my strong suit and the Education field was best for me. Teachers take on many roles in student development such as a family figure, mentor, role model, motivator, etc. The goal of a teacher should be to influence children, motivate them, and then watch them sprout into well-rounded individuals. Life is unpredictable and there are an infinite number of paths for one to choose from as they journey through life. One “trail” that seems to be a popular choice to travel is that of an educator. Why is this? What makes the sharing of knowledge so special? Perhaps there is an unparalleled joy in enlightening someone else. Perhaps it is a combination of unlimited elements that drives individuals to be educators. And perhaps there is no one sure answer to these questions. One thing is for sure, our world has seen its share of tremendous and inspiring teachers come and go with the passing years and generations of people. Unfortunately, this world has also seen its share of educators who were not so noticeable and effective. Again, I ask why is this? What makes some teachers more effective and inspiring than others? Could the difference be discovered through viewing their individual philosophies on education? My personal conclusion to this question is a resounding YES. It is an educator’s philosophy on teaching that makes the difference. Up to this point in life, I’ve simply been a student of this world, but as I move forward in life I aspire to cross the line that all before me have crossed to become educators. How will I achieve this? More importantly, will my personal philosophy elevate me to become an inspiring and encouraging teacher? And most importantly, what exactly is my philosophy on education? In a general sense, I simply hope to look at each child I teach as an individual and to make the best situation for each child. Teaching has always been an honorable and valued profession. With teaching you instill the knowledge and values that the student will take with them throughout life. I have volunteered at the elementary school with my children and have enjoyed watching the encouragement and nurturing of these teachers towards their students. I felt that I have the ability to nurture and share in the wonderment of the knowledge that prevails around us. To achieve this goal I will strive to give these students the understanding, love, and confidence that they need to prepare them for their journey in life.
Teaching is a complex occupation that requires as much empathy and emotion as it does educational skill. I had always dreamed of becoming a teacher, and realized after having my own children, that I would not truly be fulfilling my purpose in life if I did not pursue this dream. As a volunteer at the elementary school in my community, I loved the environment and took tremendous joy in watching the children learn. I felt that I had the ability, along with the dedication and desire, it would take to become a full time educator. I believe teaching is one of the hardest yet rewarding professions in the world. Teaching has the power to shape lives and produces success in every area of a student’s life. I believe teachers motivate, encourage, and inspire individuals to be productive citizens in society.
There are many rewards that come along while being a teacher; however it is key to note that it is not a role to be taken lightly. It is a difficult role to fill. Teachers need to appreciate that every child learns differently. No matter their socioeconomic status, culture, or gender, as teachers we have to inspire and have a level field in your classrooms. Teachers are faced with many challenges and issues that they may not know what to do, but the most important thing during these challenges is to not give up on the student.
As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. One of the main reasons I want to become an educator is because I feel education has really lost teachers who truly love teaching and those who truly love teaching and those who have the desire to make a difference. I feel I can really help make a difference in the education world and bring back the love to teach.
I chose education as my career path because I hope to be able to make a small difference in a child’s life. Time and time again I have seen children being educated poorly and/or not having appropriate role models in their life. I feel that an educator must not only be able to convey to the student the classroom material, but also be a counselor, coach, mentor, and a parent. Failing to fulfill these roles gives a child the chance to slip through the educational system without having the opportunity to influence them to some degree.
As we reminisce and reflect back either on our childhood or academic career, we tend to have that one teacher who was memorable to us in some way - for their sense of humor, their stellar personality, or perhaps having that charisma and charm no other teacher had to make a difficult subject and it 's concepts fun to learn. While knowledge is power, I firmly believe that it is rather the exchange and distribution of knowledge that is power. When one can educate the masses there is no doubt that together we can accomplish great things. Becoming a teacher would mean the opportunity to be able to witness the shaping and molding of the minds of the future generations and the satisfaction knowing that you have helped your students set themselves onto the right path and provide guidance towards the creation of a better tomorrow. Choosing to become a teacher will allow me not only to educate my students, but also educate myself to be a better teacher throughout my career. My interest in teaching started at a young age. I used to watch my teachers in awe as they were able to find new ways to get their students involved and excited to learn. Their enthusiasm to teach was so inspiring. I would often find myself using that same fervor as I grasped each concept. I, then, was able to relay it to my fellow classmates as a peer tutor. To this day, becoming a teacher is a passion that flows through me. However, my enthusiasm and passion are not the only reasons I would be a good teacher. This paper explores four main questions. Those questions are why I want to become a teacher, what or who influence me, what I hope to accomplish as a teacher, and what will by my legacy in my classroom. The answers based upon these questions will vary depending what they are asking. I will explore each question in depth and make it unique to me. Personally, I have a connection with teaching because back at home I used to work at a child development center and had my own classroom of fourteen little three year- olds. Therefore, I want to become a teacher because I love being with kids and it would be a dream come true. I want to accomplish many things as a teacher, but mainly gain the trust from my students. Also, the person who influenced me to decide to become a teacher is my neighbor/best friend, and she made me realize that my legacy in my classroom would not just be to make sure the students learn, but to make my students feel loved.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
In a society where kids must go to school up to the collegiate level, teaching is an impactful career choice. Teachers help contour the minds of future leaders of the world. Furthermore, teachers play a crucial role in guiding students to the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to succeed in life, and teachers lead students to make informed decisions on any topic the meet in the future. As a teacher, a person must relinquish their knowledge onto students. Finally, they must prepare their students for all the obstacles they will face later in life.
