Responsible Corporate Leadership
In 2006, there was the biggest mud volcano on Indonesia which was affected by the gas well drilled by PT Lapindo Brantas. According to Lapindo Brantas, Inc., the company focuses on oil and gas exploration and production in Indonesia, operating under a Production Sharing Contract with the Government of Indonesia in an area known as the Brantas Block in East Java.
In accordance with Hastuti, H. (n.d.), the mud flow caused sixteen villages and three sub-districts that included factories and rice fields which make these have been closed. It is also be the reason that make thousands people lost their jobs and houses plus, the transportation routes were distracted which caused the traffic jams. Therefore, numbers of refugees, unemployed, abandoned children, prostitution and education stuck are risen up.
As said by Lapindo Brantas, Inc, “Lapindo Brantas lives and thrives together with the community in its operation areas. Through building mutually beneficial relationships with the community, Lapindo Brantas hopes to provide communities with a better quality of life”. Personally, it is quite conflicting from what the company has stated because it still has hundreds of people who suffered from the Lapindo Mudflow in East Java. Even though, it has been almost seven years but these people have not received compensation from this disaster. Moreover, Lapindo claimed that it was not the company’s fault, they blamed on an earthquake in Yogyakarta where is far away from hundreds kilometers. One victim said she no longer believed that the company and the government would keep their promises since 2011. However, Lapindo paid Rp 3 trillion (US$ 306 million) to victims in early 2013. Exxon Mobil is a great example of a corporate giant. It all started in 1870, when JD Rockefeller founded U.S. Standard oil a company that will go on to be the most profitable in the world. In 1911 the company split up into 34 different companies, amongst these companies was Vacuum oil company that will later be called Mobil Oil and Jersey Standard which was renamed to Exxon corporation. In 199 the two companies decided to work together again, this was the birth of Exxon Mobil.

Mount Tambora, located on the Island of Sumbawa, Indonesia is classified as a Stratovolcano. Also known as a composite volcano, Tambora is a tall conical volcano (cone like structure) where layers of the walls are built by hardened lava and volcanic ash. The term composite is used to describe the volcano due to the composite layered structure built from sequential outpourings of eruptive materials1. Among the most common types of volcanoes, Tambora also shares its destructive prowess with best-known volcanoes such as Krakota (1883) and Vesuvius (79 A.D). The Island of Sumbawa is located in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain (a group of islands in the southern Maritime Southeast Asia) and is in the province of West Nusa Tenggara3. A map of Mount Tambora is shown in Figure 1 to provide a better perspective of its location. Interestingly enough, Tambora forms its own peninsula on Sumbawa, known as the Sanggar Peninsula. In April of 1815, after years of dormancy, Mount Tambora erupted with great intensity, approximately 7 on the volcanic explosivity index, which is shown in Figure 2. It has been estimated that the eject volume of Tambora was 160 cubic kilometres, which represents the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. The death toll has been projected to be at least 71,000 people, of who over 15% were killed directly from the eruption1. The remaining 75% have been thought to succumb to starvation and disease, as the eruptive fallout decimated the agricultural industry in the region. Following the eruption, a volcanic winter ensued. Ethical leadership organizational ethics and socially responsibility are inseparable (Johnson). Leadership is not a inherited gift or family heritage; it is not a degree from an ivy league graduate school. Becoming a leader is an intentional process of growth that must be lived out experientially (Mullane). Ethical leaders demonstrate three distinctive characteristics, knowledge, action and character. Leaders have to have the ability to say “yes” or even “no” to a never ending series of challenges. A leader needs to be able to define their values, character and leadership style. When accepting the role of leadership you become encumbered by ethical issues and concerns. .
For example, October 19, 2015, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI) and neighboring islands were blanketed with heavy smoke which was caused by a fire in Indonesia and Malaysia. our islands and other neighboring islands caused by a fire in Indonesia and Malaysia. According to CNN's articles, this fire was caused by an annual burning of land for the production of pulp, paper and palm oil on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. According to Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, this a crime against is humanity. Most of this fire incidents were contributed by farmers who slash and burn peat forest to make way for agricultural land. Indonesia is one of the largest producers of palm oil in the world, their economy was affected and the destruction of their wildlife habitat. This fire and haze have a big impact to the population of Indonesia and other affected islands. However, scientists are monitoring the huge amount of carbon dioxide was released into the air. Moreover, according to the World Resources Institute in the recent report since early September, carbon emission from the fires had exceed average U. S. daily output from 26 to 44 days. According to Carol Padgett (2012, 1), “companies are important part of our daily lives…in today’s economy, we are bound together through a myriad of relationships with companies”. The board of directors remain the highest echelon of management in any company. It is the “group of executive and non-executive directors which forms corporate strategy and is responsible for monitoring performance on the behalf of shareholders” (Padgett, 2012:1). Boards are clearly critical to the operation of companies and they are endowed with substantial power in the statute (Companies Act, 2014). The board is responsible for directing and steering the company. The board accomplishes this by business planning and risk management through proper corporate governance.
