The discourse community to which the text belongs to is the Engl 20, section 47 class. The professor, Daniel Hammond, is the expert in this community who helps teach the novices, the students of that class. The text acts as a guide from the expert for the novices to follow. Without such a piece of writing, the students would not not know what is expected of them in the class and basically what to expect, in general, from the course they are attempting to take. In a way, the text also serves as an unspoken contract between the novice and experts so there is an understanding of what is required between both parties. Through the text, the members of this community are somewhat united in their common goal to have each student pass the standard level of college writing required to graduate from the California State University Sacramento.
