The commonest question that senior students like me get asked these days is likely to be “What is your career goal?” I’m not embarrassed to tell that I wish to be remembered in history books as a prominent computer scientist like Richard Hamming. This is my life goal and it definitely requires outstanding researches. In addition, I have a natural thirst for new techniques and enjoy the excitement brought by technology advancement. However, neither my necessity of research skill nor my insatiable appetite for knowledge is satisfied by undergraduate education. So here I am applying for a Ph.D. degree.
In the first year, I majored in Information Management & Information System, which is a combination of information techniques and business administrations. However, only the technical parts of my courses could attract me and I particularly enjoyed the process of solving coding problems. I knew from the bottom of my heart that what matters most to me is the freedom to pursue what I love. So I changed my major to Computer Science at the beginning of the second year. Generally speaking, it ...
Selecting a major has been the most difficult challenge I have faced as a student at UC Merced. While many students select their major based upon statistics and ideals, I base my decision primary on my strong commitment and my passion. Furthermore, while maturing the last two years, I have learned that a major should encompass your love, talents, and desire for success in that subject.
Students base their college major choices on their interests. A study published in the College Student Journal, conducted to reveal information about students who are entering college, utilizes extensive research to identify the factors that influence students’ college major decisions. It is based upon the assumption that making “good” major choices is beneficial to the students. A “good” major is defined as one that helps students reach their post-education goals, as well as one that is compatibl...
Finishing high school with an honors diploma and many other honors awards, I wanted to keep the momentum through college. With curiosity in business, finance, informatics and language, I wanted to minor in diverse subjects. However, with a goal to graduate in four years, choosing a major that did not allow time for other minors hindered my self-motivation. Thinking I cannot change majors after freshman year of college, on one side I started to limit myself from pursuing my curiosities. Nevertheless, I vigorously pursued the unknown, researching everything I could to find a solution to satisfy my curiosities. Towards the end of sophomore year, I discovered LAMP and soon became intrigued by how businesses were managed. In particular, I was fascinated by how computers had changed businesses in t...
An Associate’s Degree in Computer Science and Information Systems is extremely diverse in order to prepare students for a specific Computer Science fields. The choices in the real world are vast and sometimes overwhelming when trying to decide a specific field of study. This is the problem that I ran into when deciding my major.
Choosing a major is the hardest thing to do its very rare that you think about a certain career and you stick to it till the end. However a lot of people change majors like if they were changing the trains or the buses because they are uncertain about what they want do and achieve in life, but not for me i knew exactly what i wanted to do since the day i realized my passion for computers. I am a student at Laguardia Community College currently majoring in Computer operations more specifically Networking and security. after recieving a degree in computer operations i want to transfer to SNHU which stands for Southern New Hampsphire University. i want go here upon graduating from Laguardia community college and pursue a masters degree in Information Technology more specifically in Internet security.
My earliest memory of career goals were in elementary school where I wanted to be a pediatrician. This would remain my goal until age thirteen when I designed my first webpage and began operating a successful e-commerce website. I had quickly learned about the power of computers – they simplified previous processes so much that a thirteen year old could operate a successful business. I was hooked and was driven to learn all that I could to unlock more of the seemingly limitless potential of computers. In high school I pursued certifications in computer networking and hardware until finally my intellectual curiosity led me to the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business where I majored in Management Information Systems and Economics.
I am often asked “What do you want to be when you’re older?” or “A Political Science degree? What do you suppose you will do with that?” And honestly, I cannot say for certain. But that’s ok, because these questions are not necessarily intended to be answered with absolute certainty. After all, no one really expects a 17 or 18 year old high school senior, whose only experiences are likely limited to what a K-12 education, a few extracurricular activities, and perhaps a part-time job can offer, to make an uninformed prediction about what he or she wants to do every day for the rest of his or her life. The way I see it, I still have eight semesters worth of college classes, perhaps a few internships or international experiences, hundreds of people to meet, and four more years of life to experience before I make my career decision. In that time, I may discover that my passions and interests are different than they are now, especially considering they have changed before.
Coming into college just a few short months ago I was unsure of what career or even what major I wanted to pursue. Even now as I work through this paper I was unsure as to the direction I wanted to take. Although what I have taken away from my first semester has lead me in the direction of field I feel comfortable pursing. I have always found the corporate business world interesting especially in the fields of computing and technology. This has led me towards the career of Solutions Architect.
After I had graduated high school, I felt assurance and certainty that I would stick with the major I had chosen regardless of how difficult it could become to obtain it. That plan eventually changed as I realized where I wanted myself to be wasn’t the path I had chosen.
The mind must never be kept idle because of its tremendous capacity to absorb and learn. After careful consideration of my aptitude, interests and experiences gained while pursuing my under graduation in the field of Computer Science and Engineering, I have decided to pursue my Masters in the field of Computer Science. Being a dynamic and ever evolving field, many new developments are expected and there is immense scope for research on new products and applications. To progress and make a mark in this field, I realize that it is important for me to pursue my Masters from a reputable university. I have always dreamt of taking up research.
... advanced computing, with specific reference to Computer Programming. I therefore believe that I must return to the academic world for further growth and achieve some more milestones.
My ultimate goal in my career is to make a commendable contribution to the computing world either by starting an innovative venture or doing research which would change the dimensions of future computing and the way we perceive the computers. Now I have determined that a dedicated higher study on Computer Science will enable me to aggregate all my previous knowledge & experience on the field and encourage in achieving my career goal. I am looking at Graduate studies to provide me with the required expertise to carry out higher studies.
Many things have lead up to my decision to choose a career in Information Systems. It started at my first semester at my local community college. I was enrolled in their graphic design program and most of the classes I was taking consisted of art classes. My first computer class was working in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. They are graphic programs that many graphic designerÕs use to make their design work. While working with these programs I was very intrigued by the power of computers and how they work. While going to school at the local community college I soon got a job at CitiMortgage working at the computer help desk. I was learning more about computers and networking which helped lead to my decision to change my degree of study to information systems.
After my twelfth grade, the inherent ardor I held for Computer Sciencemotivated me to do a bachelors degree in Information Technology. Programming and Math, a paragon of logic and reasoning have always been my favorite subjects since childhood. I still vividly remember the time during my graduation, when I was successful in creating a simple calculator application as a class assignment. The joy I derived from creating something that is used by a lot of people to help them perform complex calculations, made me realize the power of computing in its true sense. It was also in my graduation that I developed an immense interest in programming languages such as Java, C++ an...
With a four year degree in Computer Science and Engineering and after working in software industry for some time, Now I’m intended to pursue my long term goal in academics, which is to obtain a Master degree and possibly to aim for PhD relating to my preferred research area. With the enthusiasm to learn and explore the area of parallel and distributed computing, I want to achieve my Master degree specialized in relevant field. I envision myself pursuing a career in academia and research in future which will allow me to contribute those fields with my foremost interest.
