Pursing a Degree in Pharmacy

If a classmate ever tried to argue that majoring in Pharmacy is extremely difficult, I would be their nemesis. As a college student, I witness many students pursuing certain professions because they know their college years will be a breeze. I have never been one of those students. Over the past couple of years, I have matured and learned many things because of my involvement in school. Being a pre-pharmacy student has taught me how to strive for excellence in my classes and other day- to-day activities. Spending hours studying chemistry is just one of the experiences that influenced my decision in wanting to pursue a career as a pharmacist.

During my junior year of high school I began working at Long John Silver’s. One day while I was working, my manager suddenly began to vomit and sweat uncontrollably. I was extremely paranoid and called 911 immediately. My manager was rushed to the hospital, and was treated for his condition. I later found out that my manager had a reaction to a medication he took. That experience was what made me want to pursue a career in pharmacy. Finding out that one prescription can impact a person’s body to that degree was mind blowing. I wanted to learn more about prescription drugs and what makes them so powerful.

As a starting point, I enrolled into an AP Chemistry class during my junior year of high school. For the first time, I was extremely intimidated by something. I was always an intelligent student, so my fear of failure caused me to conduct an appointment with my counselor and mother. I declared that I needed to get out of the class because it was extremely difficult for me. Something inside of me was advising me to stay in the class so I did. The days of working with computers in school and at work also helped me to effectively input prescriptions into a pharmacy database. Being amongst health care professionals inspires me to want to be a pharmacist more and more each day.

Furthermore, positively impacting someone’s life through the field of pharmacology is important to me. Being able to interact with patients and explain the importance of numerous drugs is something I will enjoy. Through my admittance into a Pharm D program, I want to gain knowledge and skills that will allow me to become a successful pharmacist. In my own career as a pharmacist, I will strive to serve my patients not only as a pharmacist, but also as a friend, supporting them in their toughest moments, and as a mentor, guiding them to live a healthy life.
