Psychological Profile of Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt, the second of four children, was born on October 27, 1858, in New York City. As a child, Roosevelt struggled against frailty, nearsightedness, and asthma. He had a love for books which helped foster a love for nature and the outdoors. He also exercised vigorously and developed a lifelong interest in what he called “the strenuous life.”
At age 18, Theodore Roosevelt entered Harvard University with the intent of becoming a naturalist. As a senior he began work on a book, “The Naval War of 1812.” He then graduated 21st in a class of 177 in 1880 and married Alice Hathaway Lee. After graduation, at the age of 22, Roosevelt joined New York City’s 21st District Republican Club and was elected to the New York Assembly. On February 1884, Theodore Roosevelt’s mother died of typhoid and later on his wife died of a kidney ailment while giving birth to their daughter, Alice. In 1886, he got married to Edith Kemit Carow, who bore for him five children. Political service to Benjamin Harrison won TR a seat on the Civil Service Commission in 1889. He gained national attention by staging a fight against favoritism; his position- jobs should go to the most qualified applicants. In 1895, Roosevelt took the post of NYC Police Commissioner and fought Democrats and Republicans to establish a merit system for appointments and promotions. TR was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1897 and immediately began building the strength of the Navy.

He loved to challenge his physical stamina and would get in fights with people who tried to discourage him or talk him down. During the Spanish-American War, he volunteered to lead the Rough Riders and he led his troops through heavy fire to take San Juan Hill. Like he always said, “I want to make a man out of myself,” and that was what he did.
Theodore Roosevelt also exhibited an extraordinary sense of morality, a trait he learned from his father. Throughout Roosevelt’s political career, he interpreted every decision made as morally right or wrong and acted accordingly. He fought for political reforms in New York City because he deemed them wrong and prosecuted the trusts because he disagreed with the way they did business.
When he returned, he was a representative to the Republican convention in Chicago, and this is where he started his amazing friendship with Henry Cabot Lodge that would end up lasting the rest of Roosevelt’s life. Two years after his first wife’s death, Roosevelt got married again to a woman named Edith Carow in 1886. Before Roosevelt became President of the United States, he held several political positions, including the assistant secretary under John Long, the president of New York City’s Board of Police Commissioners, Vice President, but one of his most important positions was the command of the Rough Riders, Teddy’s regiment in the Spanish-American war. Throughout history, United-States citizens have elected several presidents, and each one of them are worth knowing for an event or an act in particular. There is an infinite amount of lessons that can be learned from other people’s mistakes, victories, and defeats. Theodore Roosevelt is one of the elected presidents, and he is worth knowing because he helped establish the Children's Aid Society, he facilitated the construction of the Panama Canal and he averted a national emergency by dealing with the 1902 coal strike. Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president, born on October 27, 1853 into a wealthy family, sickly as a child, and a very nature-loving person. That is just the beginning of this amazing person. Theodore Roosevelt as a child was homeschooled by tutors, private teachers, and was interested in zoology and biology. His family had been in America since the 1600’s, and he was the seventh generation of his family in America. What made Theodore Roosevelt such a great president and person? Many people aspire to be like him, but he sets a high bar for humanity. He is in many people's opinions one of the greatest presidents of the United States, so incredible that his face is set in stone and will be for hundreds of years in the future.
Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy as a great president, lives on today through his policies. The Panama Canal now saves ships thousands of miles, and National Parks inspire people to conserve the resources of this earth. His social justice policies keep businesses honest and force them to be fair. But like all humans he had flaws. One of his major weaknesses was he thought anyone who did not agree with him was un-American, and during World War One was suspicious of German Americans. While on state Legislature, he tried to fire a judge based on corruption because he reached a verdict Roosevelt did not agree with. But Roosevelt’s great intelligence, strength, and curiosity outweighed his flaws, and it is not surprise he is considered as one of America’s greatest presidents.

Our twenty sixth president Theodore Roosevelt was our most environmental president we have had. Born in 1858 and died in 1919 at the age of 60. Roosevelt lived most of his life in New York but one of the most important time of his life was on the family ranch. The ranch was in the Dakota Territory. Roosevelt spent two years hear after his mom and wife Alice Lee Roosevelt died on the same day in 1884. Roosevelt's background wasn't just bad news he served the nation with pride. While at Harvard Roosevelt became a member of the Porcellain Club, the highest social honor one could have at the university (Morris 101). In late January of 1880, Roosevelt became engaged to Alice Hathway Lee (123) and in June of the same year graduated magna cum laude with his bachelor of science (128). After Harvard Roosevelt went on to attend law school at Columbia University; however, he grew bored of the subject and sought to advance his political career (“Roosevelt, Theodore”). Politics appealed to Roosevelt and he sensed it suited his fiery personality perfectly.
