Introduction

From the beginning of our lives it is common to hear about how important it is to use sunscreen whenever we are exposed to sunlight or UV rays. This paper is a chance for new information and facts to be brought to your attention, about sunscreen and protection. It will include pieces of information on what stage of life sunscreen protection impacts the most, why it is so important to be aware and continuously of this issue, how it can impact our domains of development, what strategies we can use to help promote protection, and how research of this topic of becoming sun smart has impacted the understanding of human growth and development.

The Sun, is a Concern?

From the day that we are born we are told to slather on the SPF and stay out of the sun. It is important that we have an understanding of why we have to use sunscreen and what UVA and UVB rays do to our skin. It is also important to understand what chemicals in SPF and sunscreen formulas do to protect our skin. The Sun has direct rays of UVA and UVB, which are damaging to our skin. When the UV rays hit our skin they can penetrate to the dermis and slow the regrowth process, letting old dead skin get built up and appear darker. When we have prolonged sun exposure the dermis it can cause cracks in the collagen and elastin, which prevents giving us the youthful full-faced look. To protect ourselves from these rays it is recommended that we use sunscreen with a high SPF. In sunscreen there are organic chemical compounds that absorb the UV rays that the sun emits.
