If you thought the interview was done when you walked out the door you might be mistaken. In an age where people put their lives out there for people to see also comes the capability for unwanted guests to also see what goes on in your private life. Your social networking site such as Facebook or Twitter is intended as a place to post your thoughts, opinions, life events and not have it affect your livelihood. The idea of a place to feel more open and honest with anonymity is one that has come to fruition of the last ten years. With this newfound way of communication also comes a revolution in the workplace. In the age of social media, privacy has become a very touchy issue with new complications arising that could hinder the idea of privacy. Are we as Americans putting ourselves out there too much whereas it should be acceptable for an employer to use this information to evaluate potential employees as well as current ones? This is a clear invasion of privacy. Outlined below is discussion regarding the potential harm to employers as well as the employees and job candidates, and legal cases supporting this as a negative practice.
With the evolution of the internet came social networking. People can post their daily activities, photos, and comments regarding opinions on any topic. The world has become consumed with sharing their every moment in life with their “friends”. For example, Rosen states, “According to a recent survey by Microsoft, seventy percent of U.S. recruiters report that they have rejected candidates because of information found online,” (Rosen, Para. 3). Most of the time it is a necessity for companies to do online and background research on candidates because of wanting a safe environment to work in. Social media sites are the fastest way to see who a person truly is. But sometimes it can just be a character they posses because that’s what they’re followers want to see rather than their true self.
Social networking sites promote the sharing of personal information in the public format. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter promote the oversharing of details of personal lives. Posts on these platforms may vary in regards to what one may be watching, or having for breakfast, or it may include pictures of one’s latest vacation or nights out with friends at a local bar. (10) Since personal information can be shared very frequently and with ease, consumers are more likely to disregard the restraint they normally would use when sharing information in regards to personal matter. Social Networking sites play an essential role in today’s culture as they provide people with the ability to interact, blog, share pictures and videos, flirt, and date without having to move an inch. People pour their minds and hearts into the world of cyber communication; it is an easier way for them to clear their heads without having a face-to-face confrontation. Undoubtedly, this is advantageous to certain people. It helps establish connections with people, friends and family from any corner of the world, but one cannot ignore the extensive privacy breach that occurs in the universe of online social media.
This is yet another way of invading privacy. In the past, employers would only know what you told them in your interview. They would assess your skills and determine if you were right for the job, aside from knowing your beliefs or views. However, now with Facebook an employer can see all the personal information, this can negatively influence a candidate’s job.
