Alleged Global Warming has been a hot topic and been widely reported in the American media since the 1970s. In March 2014, TED, a nonprofit committed to expanding ideas with short talks, gave a powerful presentation of the alleged current consequences of Global Warming in Gavin Schmidt’s (2014) talk: The emergent patterns of climate change. His claims are stark and he implores his audience to take the grave predictions of Global Warming seriously and not just write it off as insignificant. While Google Trends (2014) shows (graph 1) that search terms for global warming in the United States (red) have decreased while worldwide (blue) interest (image 1) fluctuates with India showing the most curiosity. Yet, not everyone agrees that Global Warming is real just as not everyone agrees that cigarette smoking is hazardous to your health when scientific studies show otherwise. By defining Global Warming, giving the major arguments on both sides of the topic, and offering an overview of scientific studies, this paper will help one think critically and thoughtfully about Global Warming. Map: Darker blue shows greater interest Global Warming Many government agencies as well as American Universities offer definitions on Global Warming to define this phenomena. The Environmental Protection Agency (2014) gives a simplistic definition with four main bullets: (1) “Climate change is happening…The Earth’s average temperature has risen” in the last century, (2) “Humans are largely responsible for [the] recent climate chang... ... middle of paper ... ...ld change causing summers to possibly be unbearable even deadly and any array of other problems (Lindsey, 2012) Animals could be impacted a forced to live in alternative areas and a myriad of other consequences. (EPA Staff, 2014) Conclusion The subject of Global Warming is not going away regardless where you stand on the issue. Despite the almost endless warnings of the dangers of smoking, people are still starting to and continue to smoking even though the literature is abundant of the likely consequences to their health. Likewise, there are those that believe Global Warming is true yet they still continue to consume at the same rate even though they believe the increased temperature will cause harm to the planet. The alarm has been set and now is the time to thoroughly review all the scholarly literature to decide where you stand on this powerful issue.
Global warming is amongst the most frightening environmental issues the modern world faces; it’s adverse effects have become significantly more prevalent since the dawn of the 20th century taking the forms of powerful
As Arnold Schwarzenegger once said, “We simply must do everything we can in our power to slow down global warming before it is too late. The science is clear. The global warming debate is over” (Schwarzenegger, par.9). Has our society really made an effort to prevent global warming from evolving into a bigger disaster than it already has or are people sitting back and letting things unfold similarly to a series of unfortunate events? Andrew C. Revkin, the author of “Global Warming Is Eroding Glacial Ice”, believes that the main cause of global warming is largely due to human activity. Revkin’s claims water glaciers are disappearing which is making an overall negative impact on global warming. He believes that melting trends are showing a negative effect on the environment and that people’s ignorance to hydroelectric power is leading to future water shortages, which in the longer run will speed up the process of global warming (344). In opposition, Philip Stott, the author of “Global Warming Is Not a Threat to Polar Ice”, begs to differ and believes that people cannot simply blame humans alone for the cause of global warming, but that both the greenhouse gases and natural changes in the environment are the leading causes of an ice age. The Ice age is approaching sooner than later! Even though people believe that global warming should be a concern, Stott argues that people are far from being affected by global warming because in reality ice sheets are getting thicker and not thinner, also that there has been a change in colder climate which is effecting the environment as a whole, and that the production of greenhouse gases are not contributing to global warming, but instead leading the world to the next glacial period (Stott 346).
Before a person can tackle handling the concept of global warming, they first must analyze the true definition of what it is. Climate change periodic modification of Earth’s climate brought about as a result of changes in the atmosphere as well as interactions between the atmosphere and various other geologic, chemical, biological, and geographic factors within the Earth 's system. (britannica) Since all 196 countries in the world have to share the oxygen and carbon dioxide, we all should take a part in the responsibility of taking care of earth. On November 6, 2012 President Obama said that we want our children to live in a world without the destructive power of a warming planet. The biggest challenge we face is not only saving a warming
The Earth's climate has changed significantly throughout history. In the last 700,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat. With the abrupt end of the last ice age approximately 7,000 years ago the beginning of the modern climate era was born. In the last century the global sea level has risen 17cm. All three major global surface temperature reconstructions show that Earth has warmed since 1880. Most of this warming has occurred since the 1970s, with the 20 warmest years, having occurred since 1981 and with all 10 of the warmest years occurring in the past 12 years. There is no denying global warming. Once considered a conspiracy theory by the world’s leading governments, industries and populations; global warming
There is a lot of ambiguity surrounding the theory of 'global warming' and the proper political response to it. At the very center of the scientific debate on the variability of global climate is to what extent human activities influence climate change. Another unforeseeable is whether the potential impacts of climate change will be harmful or beneficial for humans, managed agriculture, and natural ecosystems. Some question the authority with which current scientific data has been given in international negotiations on the regulation of greenhouse gases. Others are convinced that immediate actions must be taken to limit the potential effects of excess greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere since the beginning of the industrial era.
I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group, it was the data that got me. I was convinced that the people weren’t the ones causing global warming, but when I started doing research I understood that we are the main cause. This paper will tell what global warming is and its causes.
"THE EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING." Effects of Global Warming. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 Mar. 2014. .
Global warming is the increasing temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere. In the last few decades this increase has been relatively significant. Global warming is the largest problem that the world will face in the twentieth century. This is going to require international attention and the cooperation from everyone, including the government.
“Global warming is controversial, of course, but the controversy is mainly over whether human activity is driving it (Michio Kaku).” For years, the suspect or suspects that cause global warming have been unknown. Two of the well-assumed and controversial possible defendants are balancing on a slightly unbalanced seesaw with scientific evidence that back up or refute their degree of involvement in the crisis. There is evidence that global warming is taking a toll on the earth and will continue to further affect it significantly in the future. To begin preventing these future calamities caused by global warming, society must first assess whether mans’ actions are causing global warming or if it is a natural phenomenon.
"We call them dumb animals, and so they are, for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words” (Anna Sewell). There is undeniable evidence that animals are being affected by climate change. Even though the effects are difficult to measure, there are many different ways animals are being affected. With the loss of predator and prey species it affects the life cycles in the food chain. The earth’s climate change causes habitats such as snow, ice, or forest areas to alter, resulting in loss of habitat and food accessibility as well as causing extinction.
and less winter season. It’s not only going hurt us but also our animals. We not might see the bad
III. Global warming is an issue that affects, not just Americans, but all living things on this planet. The effects of global warming are felt by all and can be seen with the melting of the polar caps and glaciers and rising temperatures. In fact, scientific evidence shows that the planet’s
Everyone knows that it’s important to reduce our impact on the environment, but some may not know exactly how crucial it is. It doesn’t seem to be a big secret that global warming is already upon us, and we need to do all we can to stop serious climate change before it happens. But some of the most recent studies indicate that climate change is already happening and will continue for the years to come regardless of actions taken henceforth—it is already too late.
Background and Audience Relevance: There are always conversations about our planet. We see our earths glaciers melting, weather temperature rising, and pollution affecting our resources. But for some reasons we tend to look away. We should be more aware of this potential event and I’m here to inform everyone about what actually is global warming and the effects of it.
In the beginning of the twentieth century scientist had started talk that the globe is warming and man is the cause. Then news stations of course took the idea and made it sound like the worst thing since World War II. The thought of the globe warming is frightening the American people and people all over the world because the scientists and the news blew it out of proportion. Although it is believed that man’s carbon emissions are the cause of global waring, in reality the global cycle of nature causes the climate to change and also provides benefits to life on Earth.
