Promoting Gender Equality and Empowering Women

Introduction

As a child, I had always believed that there was only one difference between girls or boys, one of them has cooties, besides that I had always thought of them as equals. As I grew out of that young and venerable age, I slowly started to realize that even in first world countries, women were being oppressed. They weren’t seen as equals, simply because of their gender, not because of experience or knowledge, just because they are women.

If it took me that long to find out how sexist, a developed country is how long will it take everyone. It is common knowledge, that life is better, but it is not common knowledge that the discrimination is the same.

That was when I had my doubts, will there be any foundations that promote gender equality and empower Canadian women, since Canada is a very privileged and developed country. I would think, people would want to help the countries that are more commonly associated with poverty, such as Zimbabwe or Gineua.

If there were any what would they be doing, to my surprise the Canadian Women's Foundation helps so many women across Canada with their struggles, they help the women through a healing process, meaning instead of just giving them some money and a gift certificate to Wal-Mart, they invest in support groups and classes so that the women can get chance to start over again.

Julie White created a plan for the foundation, on how they would raise money; she also made decisions such as not competing with other foundations, and she chose to represent all of Canada’s diversity.

Mina Mawani

Current CEO of the Canadian Women’s Foundation

Mina is a great leader who feels very strongly about women’s rights. She has over 15 years of experience with non-profit organizations, and an overall great CEO.

Since Mina loves giving back to the community, she helps with several different boards such as the Women’s College Hospital and she is also on the Advisory Bord for the UN Women National Committee.
