Program Outcomes
When developing curriculum at the program level ensure that the outcomes are clear statements of performance and expected achievements from graduates which are reflected in program outcome statements. “Program outcomes are statements that describe what learners will know and be able to do when they graduate from a program” ("Building curriculum at," 2012). Program outcomes should include three basic elements: vocational standards, essential employability skills, and general education requirements and should describe significant and durable learning objectives of what the learner will be able to demonstrate at the end of the program.
When developing the program outcomes ensure they are clearly stated, verifiable, essential, durable, meaningful, and significant, make sure learning is transferable, performance-based, and achievable. Program outcomes should be cultural and gender bias, and be consistent with the mission and philosophy of the university. Aligning program outcomes with affiliations, governing agencies, and accrediting bodies in ensuring they are consistent with the expectations of those professional groups and reflect the credential being awarded upon completion of the program ("Building curriculum at," 2012).
Program outcomes should incorporate the following elements changes in demographics and technology, demonstrate flow from mission and philosophy, describe the quality and characteristics expected of nurses at the end of the program, and reflect expectations of professional organizations and accrediting bodies. PO 9: Demonstrates and resumes responsibility for continued growth as an expert in the field of nursing, through engagement in educational readings, participation in professional organizations, and continued education offerings.
PO 10: Demonstrates and implements related knowledge and principals of legal, ethical, and professional nursing in accordance with the nursing code of ethics, AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education in nursing, and the ANA standards of practice.
