Proficiency in both verbal and written English is paramount to being a successful contributor to the Canadian labour market. In the new information age, where more and more communication is delivered through electronic means, there is an even more profound need for clear communication, as misinterpretation and lack of tone in emails lead to business inefficiency and conflict. These problems are optically more apparent when investigating the skilled immigrant labour pool within Canada. Our current education system and the acceptance of below standard median proficiency tests cause a further “acceptable” degradation of one’s ability to articulate and communicate in an interesting and engaging way. There are many ways to improve the plight of the deficient communicator and most of this revolves around training or retraining. The twenty first century has seen the information age and the concept of globalization shift into hyper drive. Although English is predominately the language of choice in international forums, not so much due to the sheer number of English people, but due to the growth and need for a lingua franca, or bridging language. The majority of English language growth in the world is as a second language and therefore, this makes the need for clear and concise English communication all the more vital to both employees and employers.
Canada accepted 280,636 immigrant and refugees in to this great nation in 2010 alone (Citizenship) and there seems to be no desire to decrease this annual goal in the foreseeable future. In the majority of Canada, especially west of Ontario, being skilled in the art of conversing in both written and verbal English is a must for success in the labour market. Competition is tough and the required skill level on job postings continues to rise. Employers strive to gain employees with the most potential to assist in the accomplishment of success, be it within the work cell, the department, branch, or the corporation. Failure to accomplish an acceptable level of English talent will lead to a life not fully realized, with lower paying jobs and continuous underemployment. The ability of the potential employee to master this English skill will turn to greater prosperity for that person, and allow them to blossom into a great contributor to the economy of Canada and the world.
Kirk Semple, the author of “Moving to U.S. and Amassing a Fortune, with the help of Jeffrey Singer. The two men tell use the success stories of three men who immigrated to this country. These men all made their fortunes without the ability to speak English. “And while generations of immigrants have thrived despite language barriers, technology, these days, has made it easier for such entrepreneurs to attain considerable affluence.” Semple writes this article to elaborate that it is difficult to overcome such boundaries and allows the audience to debate whether they agree that it is essential to know the English language to be successful or not.

Therefore, having limited English skills in speech or writing can have a short or long term effect on an individual’s self-esteem and opportunities. Judgment should not be placed nor should one’s worth or potential be judged based off of test scores or stereotypical sayings. Society plays a major role in what its citizens of today think of each other. Therefore, it is up to society to educate individuals who place judgment on those who have limited English skills. Individual’s with limited and temporary ability to speak or write, should not measure that individuals potential in life nor limit his/her opportunities.

In conclusion, Canada has come a long way in promoting the integration of immigrants socially. The country is making progress integrating immigrants economically, and much needs to be done before the same can be said politically. What is certain, is that the immigrant’s path of integration may be a slow process, and the Canadian government has been slow to propel it… but the future looks bright, and Canada is on the right track.
Throughout the last three decades, increasing numbers of Asians have migrated to Canada from all over the Asian continent. Currently, 44% of the Vancouver area population is of Asian descent (Statistics Canada, 2001). Immigrants commonly occupy skilled job positions that the host nation is unable to fill with its own citizens, and thus they offer many advantages to their receiving country. In a nation with a declining birthrate, such as Canada, their contribution can play a major role on multiple levels. The immigrants themselves often enjoy a greater earning potential than they did in their native country, which can be advantageous for those who wish to send money back home to support their families.

Canada is a big country possessing many natural and rich resources. Since World War II, Canada’s manufacturing, mining and service sectors experienced a significant increase which transformed the country from a mainly rural economy to a mainly urban and industrial economy (Central Intelligence Agency, 2015). Immigration plays a big role in Canada’s history, starting as early as settlers from France and England. By 1960, around one-third of Canada’s population had neither a British or French origin (Government of Canada, 2011). Immigration is important to Canada as it does not only help to maintain its population growth, but it also helps the challenges it faces to a shrinking work force due to its aging population. Recently, regardless of how good technologies are nowadays, how modern the universe can be using the creativeness and intelligence of human’s mind, we must always not forget to communicate with one another every day. Communication is define as the act of transferring information from one place to another. It may be in a form of vocally, written, visually or non-verbally (skillsyouneed.com, 2017). As for me, the ability to communicate effectively is the most importance of all life skills. This is what I have been struggling in my daily routine life as an international student here in Dublin, Ireland. Back in Malaysia, my first language is Malay, but when I came here for the first time, I found it quite difficult as English is not
People live in the world of communication. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Current English (Moore, 1997), communication is defined as, “The activity or process of expressing ideas and feelings or of giving people information”. The significance of communication can be found within the context of a human existing as a social being. As a human being manages his or her life in the course of the interaction between other members of the entire society, communication is inevitable. Communication occurs through the medium of a language and it is presented in two different forms which are written and spoken (Brown & Yule, 1983: 1-10). The importance of spoken performance of a language is becoming more prominent over the written performance capability. It is because the ability to speak a language reflects a person’s personality, self image, knowledge of the world, ability to reason, skill to express thoughts in real-time (Luoma, 2004: ix). These days, due to the global trend of internationalisation, the ability to communicate in English is needed as an essential skill. Whenever the international exchange happens, the use of spoken English entails. However, it is not always an easy task for people who use English as a second language to be able to speak to the level of a native speaker. They have to perfectly understand the sound system of English, have almost instant access to proper vocabulary and be able to place words together intelligibly without hesitation. Moreover, they also have to perceive what is being said to them and need to be able to respond appropriately to acquire amiable relations or to accomplish their communicative goals (Luoma, 2004: ix). Therefore, non-native English speakers encounter these barriers and they are subject to make mistakes often. In relation to this matter, this essay argues that there are socio-cultural factors as well as linguistic factors that affect non-native speakers’ communication in English. It provides analysis of several different situations when the use of spoken English has generated miscommunication problems in regards to author’s personal experience.
Being able to communicate effectively in a professional manner is vital in most, if not all, career paths. This statement brings up some important questions. Do potential employers really care about an applicant’s communication skills? How will I use communication skills in my own career? How has college improved my own professional communication skills? Understanding how to communicate in a professional manner can help people in their careers and I feel improving my own communication skills will benefit me now and in the future.
