What Are Professional Ethics
The nature of ethics in a professional setting are a frame work of agreements and understandings that have come together in order to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship between all parties. This is the case in any kind of business relationship was well as the in the field of the helping profession. However I think it is more so the case in the helping profession than any other due to the nature of the relationship. In a business venture the parties are more or less equal relatively speaking. They seek out and engage in practices that are profitable; however, sometimes a lack of ethics can overtake and lead them astray. Instances of insider trading are an example of this, unbalanced and therefore unethical trading field of play that can crush the opposing party.
Differently, in the case of counseling and helping one party is in a much more vulnerable state than the other. This unbalance calls for more adherence to protections and a person keenly in tune with the notions of what constitutes ethical behaviors. Further, ethical behavior is not always clear in regards to is right and what is wrong. Sometimes the answer has to do with violating a rule because doing so is the only ethical course of action one can take. Which leads us to the need and reason for this study; ethics are different from rules in the same way rules differ from guidelines. In the most overarching sense, ethics, rules and guidelines usually mirror each other to guide decision making.
These notions seem to overlap in the general sense of day to day actions. However they seem to diverge as we get further and further down the line, but at the same time are intrinsically related. Ethics break things down into two groups, ethical ...

...e gravity of the instances from another point of view. This ultimately led us to more fluid understanding of complicated situations with an ethical premise. Further, a better understanding of what ethics mean and why they are important to us as professionals are key in our success as future advisors. Ethics are not laws but they represent a foundation of ideas which help to build laws and standards of practices in our professional lives. I am certain that I can make a sound, ethical decisions when I am faced with problematic situations, this feeling is affirmed buy the knowledge gained in this class.
