As I sit here staring at the blank screen, thoughts race through my mind as I contemplate what lies ahead. Is my topic clear? Is it appropriate? What is it that I want to say? Finally the fear sets in, what lie ahead is a minefield of self-doubt and criticism, one misstep could lead to a personal catastrophe. I take each step with caution, slowly putting my thoughts on paper, exposing myself to scrutiny. The answers do not present themselves with the concrete certainty of mathematics and science, they are subjective and open to interpretation. Writing for me is an uncomfortable experience filled with irrational fear and trepidation.
The first obstacle on my journey confronts me, the topic. It is an auspicious occasion when the topic is preselected, it is one less obstacle for me to overcome. Unfortunately, when I am required to select a topic an internal struggle takes place. I immediately begin contemplating subjects of interest and their relationship to the present exercise. Is there a subject that I would like to know more about? Will this subject fulfill the requirements for the exercise? After a day or two of reflection, I present myself with a short list of topics that I find appealing and appropriate. I review my list of topics and select the one that I believe to be of the greatest interest to me. The selection of my writing topic is not a task taken lightly, it is a process requiring great care and consideration.

Once I have found it to be error free, I begin the final revision process of my paper. I have my wife review the paper for errors, she has a keen eye for spotting errors and good judgment. I then correct any errors and consider her opinions on other possible edits. I do a last reading of the paper to assuage my doubts and perform any last minute changes. Finally, my arduous task has reached completion and I can breathe a sigh of relief.
I may sigh in relief, but I have little reason to believe that the process of writing will ever be comfortable for me. Even though the results are typically favorable, the whole process seems to lack the certainty of result that I find desirable and leaves me filled with self-doubt, much like taking a step in a minefield.
When doing a revision, I like to print out a hard copy and re-read it and if it makes sense to me I will have several members of my family or my friends read it. They always seem to help because they are unaware of what I am writing about, so they will ask questions and I can always add more into the paper to make the audience aware of what is my

However, a question must, first, arise and be addressed before any writing takes place. Denise K. Comer, author of Writing in Transit, states, “Disciplines are in many ways defined by questions” (39). Writing is a way in which a person can express their thoughts and ideas through the use of words. Everybody has their own writing styles. Some may consider theirs as inspirational while others think of it to be bad. Writing requires a lot of patience and time. In my case, writing has never been my favorite thing to do. I am no Shakespeare and I never will be, writing has always made me feel uncomfortable. In the past, I had always considered writing to be one of the most difficult tasks. I often wrote about topics that were not of my interest. I rarely did any writing out of school or for leisure as most people do. I only wrote because the teacher asked us to. Writing has always been forced onto me. Even though my writing isn't that great, I've felt that I've never been given the freedom to express my voice. Academic writing has always made me anxious. And, anxiety had resulted in my procrastination. Even though I consider writing to be one of the toughest tasks, I've felt that giving myself enough time to think allows me to do better. Silence helps me think beyond horizons. However, the fear of impressing someone, the anxiety and frustration is what makes me a developing writer.

Every mistake I made in my writing, I’ve learned from and, admittedly, they might happen again, but I’ll enjoy fixing them. There was a point in time when I thought I genuinely hated writing, but I’ve come to learn that I just hate the system, not writing itself. Thankfully, I only have to endure one more year of high school essays because I don’t think I could put up with much longer. Not that I think I’ll enjoy writing essays in college, but I think I’d prefer them over standardized testing writing.

Since grade school, I have always found it difficult to express my thoughts on paper. It has always been frustrating and too time consuming for me complete. I’ve always been more of a literal, verbal, and straight to the point individual so long written out expressive essays have been a real problem. Science and Mathematics has always come natural to me but English (writing) has always been my downfall in school, with grades and confidence. Since I have started college, my writing courses have gone from one failed attempt to the next. Writing has always been a difficult skill for me, so now that I have been introduced to formal research paper in college, it has become one of my most trying challenges yet; almost as difficult as learning a new language. I will first describe my series of failed writing attempts, then the detached feelings that followed, and lastly, I will explain my specific issue with Research.
Writing in general has never been a passion or talent of mine. I have always worked very hard when given an assignment to do, but I have never enjoyed it. When I do write, I tend to find it very challenging, especially if it is a topic that I do not have interest in. Having interest in a topic is certainly the key to writing an exceptional paper if you ask me; if I don’t have enthusiasm towards a topic it shows through my writing, and my paper will not be as good as it could be. After taking Writing 102, this has been the most important realization of mine, that I write much better when I feel passionate about my topic.
