Natural selection is the process in which heritable traits that make it more likely for organisms to survive and successfully reproduce become more common in a population over successive generations. Each of us individuals is specifically shaped and formed by our own genetic pattern. We inherit this pattern half from are mother and half from are father. The cause of this is the proximate cause that led it’s phenotype to ultimate causes. Much of we know today about evolution derives from the late great pioneer, Charles Darwin. Charles Darwin was an english naturalist that even from an early age was very interested in outdoor pursuits. Early in his prep career his father tried sending him to the University of Edinburg to pursue his medical school. With his dads hopes falling through because Charles was scared by the gore of surgery and couldn’t stay in the operating room. His father then sent him to Christ’s College in Cambridge to study to be a clergyman which to his dad’s fear didn’t work out as well. He then got recognized by a professor to become a promising student in natural history. Right after, he joined a voyage that would change his thinking and his life. The five year trip on the HMS Beagle to South America opened his eyes and later in 1859 Charles Darwin Published the world-changing book, On The Origin of Species. The unity of life is tremendously important to psychology because since were all derived from one common we ancestor we can study them and learn more about us. We can do experiments on different animals and come up with life solutions to our problems that were facing today as humans. For example, we can develop new medications for mental illness by studying the affects on lab rats. All of the advances that we have made are because of the strong resemblance we have biologically between humans and animals. Evolution is one of sciences best established confirmed theories that many researchers have built on in many strong ways. Very important to psychology, we now have an understanding on an important part called genetics and evolution.
Charles Darwin contributed majorly to the evolutionary theory and was the first to consider the concept of natural selection. The evolutionary theory states that evolutionary change comes through the production of genetic variation in each generation and survival of individuals with different combinations of these characters. Individuals with characteristics which increase their probability of survival will have more opportunities to reproduce and their offspring will also benefit from the heritable, advantageous characteristic. Darwin discovered natural selection. This proclaims that all living beings did not arise, as they are, out of thin air. Each had adapted to their environment over time, allowing nature to choose those who were most fit for survival. Unfortunately, he failed to realize the error in the commonly held concept of heredity. This was that each trait from the parents was mixed together when generating offspring—similar to the process of mixing paint, as opposed to the correct analogy of mixing a deck of cards. Favorable traits would therefore never be properly passed down, revealing Darwin’s blunder.
Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection explains the general laws by which any given species transforms into other varieties and species. Darwin extends the application of his theory to the entire hierarchy of classification and states that all forms of life have descended from one incredibly remote ancestor. The process of natural selection entails the divergence of character of specific varieties and the subsequent classification of once-related living forms as distinct entities on one or many levels of classification. The process occurs as a species varies slightly over the course of numerous generations. Through inheritance, natural selection preserves each variation that proves advantageous to that species in its present circumstances of living, which include its interaction with closely related species in the “struggle for existence” (Darwin 62).
Children often play a game called telephone, where one child whispers a statement into another child's ear, and the statement is passed on to other children; at the end of the game the last child will repeat the statement that was told to him or her. The majority of the time, the statement said would be completely different than the original one. This is an example of evolution through natural selection; where somewhere along the life span of the statement, it was modified, and the modified statement was passed on to form a new statement.

This places creation, supported by the bible, and evolution, supported by numerous scientific studies, against one another. Creationists against the theory of evolution state that everything was created by a single god, and explained that divine will govern the evolutionary process. This goes against Darwin’s theory that natural selection, not divine will, governs evolution (Feiro 3). Darwin does not deny creation, that the world may have been created by a religious figure, but it is operated by the natural laws displayed in his theories (Feiro 3-4). The scientific community accepted the gravitational theory without having to change religion, only their views and perspectives on physical properties. When looking through the notebook trying to find the subjects that I wanted to talk about I found two topics that I thought were the most interesting and that I understood the most. Natural selection is simple yet complex process that allows species adapt to its environment. Natural selection guides evolution by “sifting out” favorable traits that increase survival for the species. Natural selection is driven by reproductive success. Anyone with even a moderate background in science has heard of Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. Since the publishing of his book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859, Darwin’s ideas have been debated by everyone from scientists to theologians to ordinary lay-people. Today, though there is still severe opposition, evolution is regarded as fact by most of the scientific community and Darwin’s book remains one of the most influential ever written.
Many scientists in the past, such as Aristotle and Plato, believed that there were no changes in populations; however, other scientists, such as Darwin and Wallace, arose and argued that species inherit heritable traits from common ancestors and environmental forces drives out certain heritable traits that makes the species better suited to survive or be more “fit” for that environment. Therefore, species do change over a period of time and they were able to support their theory by showing that evolution does occur. There were four basic mechanisms of evolution in their theory: mutation, migration, genetic drift, and natural selection. Natural selection is the gradual process by which heritable traits that makes it more likely for an organism to survive and successfully reproduce increases, whereas there is a decline in those who do have those beneficial heritable traits (Natural Selection). For example, there is a decrease in rain which causes a drought in the finches’ environment. The seeds in the finches’ environment would not be soft enough for the smaller and weaker beak finches to break; therefore, they cannot compete with the larger and stronger beak finches for food. The larger and stronger beak finches has a heritable trait that helps them survive and reproduce better than others for that particular environment which makes them categorized under natural selection (Freeman, 2002).

This theory is his attempt at an explanation on how the world and its' species came to be the way that we know them now. Darwin writes on how through a process of millions of years, through the effects of man and the effects of nature, species have had an ongoing trial and error experiment. On Darwin’s trip around the world he found something very interesting on the Galapagos Islands. On the isolated islands he found fourteen species of finches with very similar characteristics but they had some differences in their beaks, diet, body size and habitat. Darwin thought the birds had a common ancestor. He thought that some time back some finches arrived on the islands and the finches with the beaks that suited the islands conditions survived this happened on all the islands. Evolution is defined as a process that results in heritable changes in a population spread over many generations (8).Scientists believe in the theory of evolution. This belief is based on scientific evidence that corroborates the theory of evolution. In Figure 1 the pictures of the skulls depict the sequence of the evolution of Homo-sapiens. As the figure shows, man has evolved from our common ancestor that is shared by homo-sapiens. The change of diet of homo-sapiens over time has thought to contribute to the change in jaw structure and overall skull shape.
