Oral Report
I chose the easy route of interview my grandpa (Dean Randel) who served in World War II as flight deck operator that signaled the aircrafts and got them ready for flight. He was station in San Diego on the USS Wisconsin which was of course a aircraft carrier. As I grew up he always told me stories of the good times he had with buddies and just living the good life. This is a first for me to sit down one on one with him and hear about what went on. Before I could even get a word in my grandpa ask me, “Do you know how Veterans Day was brought about?” I was so shock he was into doing this that I just shut my mouth and listened. He continued by saying in 1921, an American soldier -his name "known but to God "-was buried on a Virginia hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, DC. The burial site of this unknown World War I soldier in Arlington National Cemetery symbolized dignity and pride for all American veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an "unknown soldier” was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor (I later researched and found out it was in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I hostilities at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as "Armistice Day.”Armistice Day of...
Many women during WWII experienced things that they had never done before. Before the war began women were supposed to be “perfect”. The house always had to be clean, dinner ready on the table, laundry done, and have themselves as well as their children ready for every event of the day. Once the war began and men were drafted, women had to take on the men’s role as well as their own. Women now fixed cars, worked in factories, played baseball, handled the finances, and so forth. So, what challenges and opportunities did women face on the home front during WWII? Women had many opportunities like playing baseball and working, they also faced many hardships, such as not having enough food, money, and clothing.
Through history, the United States has participated in many significant events, such as the infamous Civil War, World War I and II, and the Cold War. In the same manner, the United States has been in many conflicts with the Middle East. For instance, the Gulf War where, we, the United States, liberated the Saudi Arabian country Kuwait from the dictator Saddam Hussein; however, he is in command of one of the most powerful armies in the globe (Operation). Even though this conflict only lasted for months, America had overcome a milestone. So many military personnel have participated in this conflict and all have different stories as well as perspectives. Whether the veteran was on the front line or working behind the scenes, everyone who contributed in Operation: Desert Storm made it successful. Despite the many deaths in this conflict, the lives that were sacrificed will be remembered forever.
World War 1 was a deadly battle with millions dead, but do you ever wonder what caused world war 2? There are many causes for world war 2, but the item that caused an impact on the war the Treaty of Versailles. World war 1 started on August 1914 and ended on November 1918 it lasted for 4 years and 3 months. World War 2 lasted for 6 years with even more people dead and injured. So how did the versailles treaty help cause world war 2. The treaty of versailles punished Germany too harshly in four key ways: Territorial losses, showing how Germany is weak, and vulnerable, making the Germans pay, and the germans also wanted to destroy the treaty.
The memorial grew out of a need to heal the nation's wounds as America struggled to reconcile different moral and political points of view. In fact, the memorial was conceived and designed to make no political statement whatsoever about the war. The Memorial is a place where everyone, regardless of opinion, can come together and remember and honor those who served. By doing so, the memorial has paved the way towards reconciliation and healing, a process that continues today.
World War II may have been the focus of the decade, but music was the focus of the war. Songs ranged from patriotic songs to songs for fun and dancing such as the Rumba, mambo, cha-cha, and conga line. These South American dances became very popular during the 1940s especially among the women (Popular and Social Dance). The war was a very emotional period for everyone, not just the soldiers, so the music of the war tapped into a lot of emotions. The songs were made for people to help get through their rough times.
In the U.S, a day to remember the deceased soldiers was created by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966. “Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America.” Now it is observed in almost all of the states on the last Monday of May, so the population can have a three day weekend. We can see during this period people decorate graveyards with flowers and American flags (Hernandez,
Originating on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, 1918, the cessation of fighting at the end of World War I would come to be known as Veterans Day. This hallowed day, was thought to be the end to wars, and was reflected upon by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 as representative of the solemn pride to honor those who died in service of their country. World War II Diary April 8th 1940. Dear Diary Life is the same as usual in Rotterdam. My wife, Lisa and son Jack. are doing fine and my job at the harbour is going well. However, a new threat seems to be lurking in the distance, one we have not had to.
My name is Alanna Inniss from Atlanta, Georgia. Today, I am explaining how WWII came to be. WWII was a major event in world history. It took place during the years of 1939-1345. This war was fought because of the bombing on Pearl Harbor, militarism, appeasement, and alliances.
Veterans’ Day is celebrated in honor of the men and women who laid their lives in war to uphold freedom for their nation. It was initially called Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. The war ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of
The reason we have this holiday is to “honor all the military service members who have served during times of peace and of war’ according to the Department of veterans affairs. This day is important because it shows how much we appreciate there service to this country, it also honors all soldiers who died in service. Veterans day started about a hundred years ago on Nov. 11, 1918 this is the year the fighting stopped in WW1 so this is the day that congress decided to set some time apart each year to show our gratefulness to our troops. president Jerald
In giving a speech, it is beneficial to establish the topic to get one's point across. If I were discussing the history of World War I, I would give examples of events during the war, stories from articles and first-hand knowledge, testimonies from war veterans, and facts and statistics about happenings in the war. The other four topics given are slightly different, yet similar. An analogy is a comparison. For example, I could describe an event and compare it to something that would be easier to understand. An opinion would side with my personal thoughts or the thoughts of others much like a story or testimony. Furthermore, a comparison and contrast draw parallels to an example that would give similarities between two events or situations.
Commemoration is a time to reflect on the fact that our entire way of life is predicated on the sacrifices and courage of those that came before us and fought for our respective nations. It takes more courage than most of us can imagine risking ones life for an intangible goal such as victory for a nation. It has long been held that we should honour our past soldiers, to that honour I say that we should add thanks and deference.
Assuming this scenario takes place in modern times, I am prepared to help as best I can without putting myself at risk. The given situation has clear parallels to that of Nazi Germany, where religious and ethnic minorities faces massive persecution by the authoritarian government, culminating in most heinous a genocide to ever occur in human history. It would seem that in the scenario history is repeating itself.
Logan on May 5, 1862, General John A. Logan. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he said (History 2015). The date of Decoration Day, which is what he called it then, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any battle specifically. General James Garfield gave a speech at Arlington National Cemetery on the first Decoration Day where 5,000 people decorated the graves of 20,000 soldiers who were buried there (PBS 2015). Many Northern states had similar events and by 1890 each one had made Decoration Day an official state holiday. On the other hand many southern states continued to honor their dead on many different dates until after World War One (Office Of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs
