September 24,2001 Terrorism
Throughout history there have been much devastation, which have
had a lasting impact on the world, as we know it today. There has not been
such devastation such as the hijacking of American flight 11 and United
Flight 175, which hit the world trade center, and the American flight 77,
which hit the Pentagon on September 11th 2001. Such a terrorist to inflect
pain on a large mass of citizens is accomplished for many reasons. One
religion, Islam, was used in the reasoning of the terror attack in New York
City. To many in the Muslim community this is not the Islam religion and
that they should not be harassed because of there appearance. I agree that
this will not be a war of religion but a war of terrorism.
“Adherent’s call Islam the nation’s most misunderstood religion”, as
one Newsday article reports. Islam’s sacred text, the Quran, helps clear up
the misunderstanding of this peaceful religion. Islam is very closely related
to Judaism and Christianity. “The underlying theme is human accountability
for their actions”, Raug stated. Alike other religions there are extremists who
take it to the limit and beyond. In the hijackings it was believed that these
terrorists were looking for...
made an impact throughout history and into present day, and will continue to do so into the future.
There are many differing definitions of terrorism. What is terrorism? How do we define it? Why is one man’s terrorist another man’s freedom fighter? These are just a few of the questions that face the world on a daily basis. There are many challenges that face the international community when it comes to how to define terrorism and what it constitutes. This paper will explore the challenges facing scholars when it comes to labeling terror and discuss potential ways to properly define it.
As David Canter stated in his book, The Faces of Terrorism: Multidisciplinary Perspectives, “Terrorism is multifaceted and, as a consequence, no one explanation, theory or discipline will ever fully account for all terrorist activities. However, the psychological and social psychological processes that lead any given person to commit a terrorist act tend to have been under-represented in the terrorist literature. This is doubtless in part due to the difficulty of conducting studies that engage directly with those individuals who carry out terrorist acts.” (Canter 1) Basically, Canter discusses how terrorism, as discussed before, is not a one-sided act.

In Module one, I learned that terrorism is a result of physical harm or deadly acts of force with the intent of a political outcome by the use of terror for coercion. There are various types of terrorism such as international terrorism and domestic terrorism. International terrorism occurs outside of the United States with a purpose to influence the policy of a government by intimidation. International and Domestic terrorism both involve violent acts dangerous to human life that violate federal and state laws. Domestic terrorism occurs within the United States with the intention of coercion or intimidation by way of mass destruction, etc. Some forms of terrorism include Improvised explosive devices (IED), kidnappings, suicide bombings and
After 9/11, governments put resources into building up their operational counter-terrorism capacities expanded the financial plans and extended the numerical quality of their knowledge groups and authorization powers. Thus, governments could screen a bigger number of suspected terrorists, colleagues, supporters and sympathizers and lead opportune captures.
Think of the word terrorism. What is the first thing that comes to mind? One might think of kidnapping, assassination, bombing, or even genocide and guerrilla warfare. Because it is such a broad and complex issue, an all-encompassing definition is hard to formulate. The United States Department of Defence defines terrorism as…
The concept of terrorism is exceedingly difficult to define. Author Gerald Seymour first said in his book Harry’s Game that, “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”. Each individual may view terrorism in a different light. Because of this, there is currently no universal definition of terrorism. However in recent years, it has become increasingly more important to form a definition of terrorism, especially while working in the media.
National terrorism has been the focus of attention since September 11. But now domestic terrorism is becoming increasingly common among hate groups across the nation. Domestic terrorism can be defined as visible crime, or “street crime.” These acts would consist of violent crimes, (acts against people in which injury or death results) property crimes (acts that threaten property held by individuals or the state) and public order crimes. (acts that threaten the general well-being of society and challenger accepted moral principles) It can also however be described as political crime, (criminal acts by or against the government for ideological purposes) which would include the 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombing.
What are the various reasons for the use of terrorist tactics? Freedom is obviously a very strong motivation for using all means at their disposal for that freedom. A fight to recover what has been taken from them is often another great incentive for using unorthodox means if the group is not a traditional government. But what of those involved in a struggle simply to have access to power? In Afghanistan there are a large number of foreign fighters from many countries, operating under the guise of Al Qaeda. They are here to take control and impose its own style of oppression in the country. However, there are foreign fighters here from the international military side may have the same goal. Who is the terrorist? The need for absolute integrity
"Terrorism and guerrilla warfare, whether justified as resistance to oppression or condemned as disrupting the rule of law, are as old as civilization itself. The power of the terrorist, however, has been magnified by modern weapons, including television, which he has learned to exploit." (Guerrillas and Terrorists) There are many definitions and forms of terrorism: biological and chemical, nuclear, international, cyber, criminal, environmental, and US Domestic terrorism are some examples. Usually, terrorists blackmail governments with hostages to reach their ultimate goals. "In the 1980's, kidnapping was the preferred action of terrorists groups." (World History People and Nations) In some incidents, terrorists kill unsuspecting, innocent people and themselves as well.
Given the growing global threats of terrorism, it is significant that an understanding of the history, nature and mechanism-premises under which terror operates is obtained. This is significant as it would shape the perspective of policy makers when addressing issues of this nature. Terrorism, as it is understood is the action of none-state weak actors, individual or groups, who for some reasons feels suppressed, marginalized and, or denied what they may view as the basic human right. All terrorism has political objectives, even though the perpetrators may use religious relics to appeal to a wider existing audience, and invoke a response through violent act to prove or propagate their point. Yoram Schweitzer in "Suicide Terrorism Development & Characteristics," Mark Sedgwick in "Al-Qaeda and the "Nature of Religious Terrorism," and Dr. James Armstrong, all demonstrates that suicide terror attacks are politically motivated even though the perpetrator may use religious symbolism to justifies their acts.
In 2016, a total of 11,072 terrorist attacks occurred worldwide, resulting in more than 25,600 total deaths and more than 33,800 people injured. Terrorism is the act of unlawful and unjust violence to intimidate or fill a population of people with fear, to pursue their goals that are religious, political, or ideological. Terrorism is a major issue in the world because innocent people are being affected. There are many different types of terrorist attacks that can be perpetrated. Because a terrorist attack is instantaneous, it is hard to be prepared and rush innocent citizenry somewhere safe. In addition, when a terrorist attack happens, people are alarmed, skeptical, and frighted. Terrorism damages the lives
“Terrorism refers to political violence that targets civilians deliberately and indiscriminately “. In this definition there is a notion that the terrorist are attacking innocent people for reasons which society do not deem correct for their actions. In the past terrorism was mainly separated into three categories, insurrectionary, nationalist and issue terrorism. The first two are types of terrorism aimed to overthrow of a state or a rule, whereas the third one is done to promote a single cause. Michael Ignatief, a Liberal Canadian politician and an author, added a forth category that is Global terrorism. Global terrorism “is aimed at inflicting damage and humiliation on a global power or at transforming global civilizational relations.”
What is terrorism, and what constitutes an act of terror? Certainly, the history of terrorism is as old as war itself. Some might say that the strategy of causing fear in the enemy, to make him overestimate your forces while simultaneously doubting his own, make up the very essence of warfare. But mention the word “terrorism” to somebody, and chances are that the first thing that comes to mind is a mental image: The Oklahoma City bombing, dead Marines in Beirut, the Unabomber, or Lockerbie. The events of September 11, which have become synonymous with the idea of terrorism in America, would certainly be at the top of that list. But even these events, which best illustrate the phenomenon for us, fail to define it. This is because of the different circumstances behind each occurrence. The sum cannot simply be broken down into its antecedents. So how do we define a term as broad as terrorism? Before you can destroy your enemy, you must understand your enemy. Keeping this in mind, we’ll look at the many different classifications that terrorism can be separated into, before moving into tactics and mentality.
