Romeo and Juliet
In Act 3 Scene 1, the violence results in the banishment of Romeo.
The purpose of this coursework is to explore how Shakespeare makes Act 3 Scene 1 exciting for the audience.
Act 3 Scene 1 is the main turning point of the play where it becomes a tragedy, the scene begins with Mercutio humouring everyone and then enters the happily married and love-struck Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt now that he has married Juliet, Tybalt thinks that Romeo is mocking him but still refuses so Mercutio decides to fight for Romeo because he has dishonoured himself, Romeo tries to stop them fighting but ends up getting Mercutio killed, filled by his rage he kills Tybalt, both families rush to where Tybalt and Mercutio lay dead the scene ends with the Prince declaring the banishment of Romeo.
Tybalt’s character does not change at any point before or during Act 3 Scene 1, because he is a fiery person.
Romeo’s character is kind, gentle, loving person before Act 3 Scene 1 but during the scene he is gentle and loving only for half the scene until the death of his best friend Mercutio when he avenges him.
Mercutio’s character is humourous, joking and sarcastic before Act 3 Scene 1 and is humourous, joking and sarcastic during the scene too up until his death which was because of Romeo when he suddenly turns on Romeo
Benvolio’s character is a hot headed, concerned, a good and loyal friend and a peace loving person which does not change before or during Act 3 Scene 1.

.However,as the play progresses,it becomes noticeable that Benvolio has changed through his character and makes different choices to help his friends,but as the same time deceives them.The text states that,”O noble Prince,I can discover all The unlucky manage of this fatal brawl.There lies the man,slain by young Romeo,That slew thy kinsman,brave Mercutio.”(3.1 144-147) Shakespeare forms him to be a leader when situations are not the best between the Capulets and the Montagues;he portrayed beginning when the “civil brawls”(1.1 92) first started breaking out in the streets.
Romeo, Benvolio, Tybalt, and Mercutio often times have their moments, whether they be comedic relief, tense segments, plot fillers, or simple information givers. It is overt Mercutio, Tybalt, and Benvolio is Romeo's best buds and foil. A foil is an opposing character who reveals information or traits about another character, mainly a protagonist. Mercutio is Romeo’s close friend and a blood relative of the Prince and Count Paris, Tybalt is Romeo’s enemy and a Capulet, and Benvolio is a Montague and a sweet one at that. Romeo and Juliet has many themes which are fate, death and love, these are all intertwined. At the very beginning of the play, before we even know the characters, we know that ‘death-marked’ ‘Star crossed lovers’ will ‘take their lives’ which already brings in the major themes. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony throughout the play and builds up the tension until Act 3 scene 1 where death starts to play a role. The Prologue also informs us about the Montagues and Capulets dislike for each other. The theme of love is also there thought the play. There are different types of love, the unrequited love the Romeo feels for Rosaline and that Paris feels for Juliet. There is also the love between friends such as with Romeo and Mercutio as Mercutio dies to protect Romeo’s honour and then Romeo avenges his death, and then the romantic love Romeo and Juliet share. I believe the Mercutio is one of the main characters in this play. His speeches tell us a lot about him and his actions have a large affect on the ending of the play. Mercutio’s name means mercurial meaning “an unpredictable and fast changing mood” which is an accurate description of Mercutio's personality because in Queen Mabs speech at the beginning he is joking and seeking attention, but at the end he becomes serious and angry.
In act 3, scene 1 Benvolio says “By my head here comes the Capulets”. Then Mercutio replies “By my Heel I care not.” This reply can let the audience know that Mercutio is a brave man because he uses femininity and he’s arrogant to show that he care’s less about trouble. Tybalt walked into the scene and said “Follow me close, for I will speak to them. Gentlemen, good e’en. A word with one of you.” This can make the audience think that Tybalt isn’t big enough to back himself he needs his companions next to him. Then Mercutio says “And but one word with one of us? Couple it with something. Make it a word and a blow.” This shows that Mercutio is putting on a show of masculinity.
After Tybalt killed Mercutio and Romeo challenges him to a duel, Romeo demands, “That late thou gavest me, for Mercutio’s soul/ Is but a little way above our heads/ Staying for thine to keep him company/ Either thou or I, or both, must go with him” (Shakespeare Act III scene i, lines 119-123). This quote shows how Romeo’s downfall is partly his fault because he is defying the prince’s command to no longer fight with the Capulets by challenging Tybalt. Since Romeo is aware that he is defying the prince and fighting anyway it is proven he is contributing to his own demise or downfall. When Mercutio is wounded after fighting Tybalt , he cries, “I am hurt/ A plague o’ both your houses!” (Shakespeare Act III scene i, lines 84-85). The excerpt shows how even Mercutio recognizes the feud between the Montagues and Capulets being destructive, and how it is now gotten so out of hand he has been dragged in it. Mercutio tries to open Romeo’s eyes on how if this feud continues there will be a demise for both families; but by Romeo choosing to ignore this advice and killing Tybalt he is setting himself up for his failure/downfall. In this context, Romeo's last words in this scene are tremendously significant. His sense of dread, after Mercutio's strange behavior, has deepened rather than diminished, and for the first time he actually defines what it is he feels: he senses that the events which are about to unfold will result in his death-the ultimate dreamless sleep. He is, of course, right. The violence which Queen Mab will set in motion that night are no dreams, but real. And yet Romeo seems to realize that there is nothing to be done except face the future squarely; there is no running from it. "But he, that hath the steerage of my course, / Direct my sail!" (I, iv, 112-13). His final words, "On, lusty gentlemen!", are to Mercutio and their other friends, but they might have been addressed to himself as well. It is his passion, his impetuosity, his lust, which will spell his doom-all of it foreshadowed in Mercutio's "talk of dreams."
In Act One of William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, we meet Romeo, Mercutio, and Tybalt. Right away, we get an idea of who these characters are and what kind of role they will play throughout the story. Romeo, Mercutio, and Tybalt share many distinctive characteristics and personalities in the story. We learn that Romeo is the romantic and handsome son of the Montagues. In the beginning of the story, he was depressed, but his mood quickly changed as the story went on. We also learn that Mercutio is Romeo’s closest and good friend who tries to make Romeo forget about his first love, Rosaline. He is a great entertainer and he’s very sarcastic too. Instantly, we learn that Tybalt is a Capulet and Juliet’s cousin. He is very hot-headed, aggressive, and violent. He loathes the Montagues very much. Finally, in Act One of William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, we meet three characters, Romeo, Mercutio, and Tybalt and we directly get an idea of what the characters are like.
Tybalt is one the few characters, if not the only, that hates through the whole play.
Romeo and Juliet is a famous play that was first performed between 1594 and 1595, it was first printed in 1597. Romeo and Juliet is not entirely fictional as it is based on two lovers who lived in Verona. The Montague’s and Capulet’s are also real. Romeo and Juliet is one of the ten tragedies that William Shakespeare wrote. In this essay, I aim to investigate what act 1, scene1 makes you expect about the rest of the play.
Malvolio’s dislikeable rigidity nature is shown immediately in his first entrance in the play, in his rude humiliation of Feste, “I marvel your ladyship takes delight in such a barren rascal … unless you laugh and minister occasion to him, he is gagged” (McEachern, 2007). The disapproval towards his rigid humorless attitude immediately follows with Olivia reprimanding her steward’s habit for making a big deal out of everything, “O you are sick of self-love, Malvolio, and taste with a distempered appetite” (McEachern, 2007). Malvolio further manifests his rigid and fun despising personality as he, depicted as a killjoy, spoils the revelry of Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Feste late in the night “My masters, are you mad? Or what are you? Have you no wit, manner, nor honestly, but to gabble like tinkers at this time of night” (McEachern, 2007). It is exactly this fun despising side, depicted as Malvolio’s “stubborn and uncourteous parts” that earns him the enmity of the revelers. In act III, fate takes its first victim. Mercutio, Romeo's best friend and companion, avenges Romeo by fighting Tybalt, Romeo's enemy who is also Juliet's cousin. Mercutio is slain and foreshadows Romeo's future; "Ask for me to-morrow, and you shall / find me a grave man (3/1/89-90)." Romeo is extremely grave afterwards. He kills Tybalt and is banished from Verona forever. He realizes that to love an enemy can lead to devastating events, if one does not take enough time to deal with the situation at hand.
Leporello on the other hand , is wimpy , subservient , nervous , and a bit dumb. He is often the butt of Don Giovanni’s jokes , and is always being bossed around. He can be thought of as the comic relief of the opera. In the dinner scene we get a definite feeling of Leporello being a wimpy idiot.
Romeo on the other hand would much rather use his words than resort to violence. In Act 3, scene 1, during the violent encounter between Mercutio and Tybalt, Romeo is seen as trying to settle the feud between the two men rather than them getting into a fight. “Gentle Mercutio, put thy rapier up. / Draw, Benvolio; beat down their weapons. / Gentlemen, for shame! forbear this outrage!” (3.1.83-86). Romeo is once again portrayed as more feminine since he is trying to diffuse the situation using his words and not actions. However, later in the scene when Mercutio is murdered, Romeo’s feminine traits as well as masculine traits are portrayed since he only then resorts to violence in order to defend Mercutio’s honour and avenge his death. In conclusion, Malvolio is not seen to be funny in a sense that the audience laugh with him but instead the audience laugh at him because of his puritanical ways and his pompous nature. However, a modern audience would stop laughing at the character when they see the severity of his mistreatment by the other characters. He is made out to be a fool all throughout the play but the trick that is played on him is taken too far which ultimately ends up in the audience sympathising for Malvolio.
