Physical Appearance and the Use of Steroids
It is hard to deny the fact that a good body will get you more attention. Women have always wanted the perfect body and would do just about anything to get it. These days, women are not the only ones concerned with their image. Studies have shown that more and more men are worrying about their appearance, especially because of peer pressure. However, there are fewer things for men to do in order to get well built, muscular bodies. This means that in many cases, men must turn to steroids. Steroids are a very dangerous drug, with many terrible side effects (InfoFacts).
There are many different kinds of steroids; the most popular being anabolic steroids. When all is said and done, Anabolic-Androgenic steroids are pretty much nothing more than man-made testosterone. When they are used legally, which is for medical purposes, they are used to treat patients that have diseases which result in the loss of lean muscle mass. However, if you do not have one of these diseases and you use steroids, you are using them illegally. Getting caught using steroids carries some big penalties (InfoFacts).
In 1990, anabolic steroids were added to the federal schedule of controlled substances thanks to The Anabolic Steroid Control Act. This means that anyone caught using steroids for non-medical purposes are in some serious trouble. Being in possession of steroids can land you in jail along with having to pay a fine. The first time someone is convicted ...
In our days, most people have set the goal and dream to have the perfect body. They believe by having this image, they will be popular and/or attractive. People want to achieve the body that they desire, like a super star, a hero in a Hollywood movie, a strong soldier, and an Olympic athlete. However, what are the extent people will go to get the perfect body? The biggest problem for those who dream to have a beautiful body today, as many people know, is the consumption of steroids. It is amazing what people and athletes will do to enhance their performance, strength and muscle size by taking steroids. Whether right or wrong people who use steroids to become the fastest and strongest will prevail, so who would turn down a substance that could turn them into a super athlete and a muscle man? The purpose of this essay is to inform the reader on the popular anabolic steroids that most people use and the positive and negative side effects of steroid use on its users and finally my personal point of view.
Many athletes that are so much better than other average athletes are always subject to the question of “Are you on steroids?” Steroids have many slang terms such as roids, juice, pumpers, gym candy, and many other humorous names. There are many Pros and Cons to anabolic steroids. The biggest one is health risk and that can go on for a while, but we will start with how they say it is bad for your long term health and how it can keep you from having kids. They say it is bad for your health because people that took it back in the 80s abused it and didn’t know any better. It 's still a bad drug it 's just in the new day and age people have found a smarter more efficient way to take steroids, yet they still frown upon it. The FDA just contradicts themselves when they say
There are many types of steroids abused by athletes in order to increase their muscle mass and strength. Though steroids have a negative reputation, there are some that can be beneficial to athletes and certain patients. There are types of steroids called corticosteroids that have more medical uses to them and another type called anabolic-androgenic steroids that have a more limited medical use. The anabolic-androgenic are usually the steroids that are being abused by athletes (Bigelow, par.10). The use of steroids goes back to the end of World War II around the 1940’s. Doctors were giving the freed prisoners from the Nazi concentration camps that were at risk of death anabolic-androgenic steroids to help gain back their muscle mass and weight faster. From this knowledge, steroids began to be used by body builders and athletes to get more fit than they already were. It is believed that the abuse of the steroids started in the late 1940’s by weight lifters and bodybuilders, and by the 1950’s, it was spread to the Olympics (Bigelow, par.11). Any type of steroid should not be used if they are only going to be abused by being used in large doses with the intentions of increasing lean muscle mass and strength (Bigelow, par.11). After years of abuse of anabolic-androgenic steroids in the Olympics they were added to the list of banned substances and random testing of athletes were announced to start taking place (Bigelow, par.35).
By taking steroids, significant change will happen to your body that will appear after a couple of doses and lifting. Bodybuilder’s are an example of daily muscle strength by lifting and using steroids at the same time. Bodybuilding is even a sport that’s televised as a competition show, and will notice how strong and muscular they are. Don’t think that’s all training with no alternative way. Most builders use types of steroids to get to where they are now. Effectiveness is the better performance of a certain sport or training program. Professional baseball players are more likely to use steroids for better performance. In most cases, it helps most professionals to get their weight up quicker or muscular pumped throughout the process. Athletes usually take steroids during their off-season of their certain sport there doing, and will use that off-season to lift way more and do way more training they ever done to see much progress. These pros are most likely the main effectiveness of athletes and body builders who use
Anabolic steroids are a group of muscle building chemicals, which are synthetic versions of the male hormone, testosterone. Developed in the 1930’s, they were prescribed to aid in muscle tissue repair by those who had undergone surgery or had degenerative diseases. Now the patients do not only use them but also athletes. Starting in the 1940’s steroids were introduced into sports. Steroids were one of the main reasons that Russia’s 1952 Olympic weightlifting team came out with pile of medals. With these results other nations thought their competitors should have the same advantage, and the use of steroids spread like wildfire.(NIDA pg 2) But now steroids are illegal to use if not prescribed by a physician, and have been banned by nearly all-athletic organizations, both professional and amateur.
Steroids build mass and strength and increase tissue to boost endurance (Szumski 11). Athletes use drugs in sports to build mass and strengthen a person’s bones, increase oxygen intake, work tissues, help pain, stimulate a persons body, reduce a person weight, and to hide the fact that a person is using other drugs (Szumski 12). Things that are considered steroids or an illegal body building drugs are, Anabolic Steroids, Beta-2 agonists, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) , luteinizing hormone (LH), Human Growth Hormone (HGH), Insulin-like growth factors, and insulin (Szumski 13).
Steroids (anabolic) are a drug that was discovered and made by medical scientists in the last 1930’s to help with medical problems. The drug was made to help with many medical problems such as testosterone, growth, sexual functioning, and other medical problems such as helping people with HIV to help grow musical. It also helps with many other diseases. Like any other drug on the market people learn that the drug can be used for many other ways. Steroids can enhance athlete’s performance as well as bodybuilders and is used in almost every sport out there. The use of steroids has become a widespread problem. Steroid use has caused many help problems with the misuse of the drug and has caused the drug to be illegal for people to use them in any kind of sport. Steroids are only prescribed for people that need them for medical problems only.
Anabolic steroids were first developed in 1930 when scientists attempted and successfully created a synthetic form of testosterone. This synthetic product was created for the intent that it will aide men who were unable to generate a sufficient amount of testosterone for a safe and balanced growth (Anabolic Steroids, 2013). Steroids simply function by converting proteins into muscle at an accelerated speed, which is the major influence for users. Over the past few years, there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of teenagers experimenting with steroids with little or no awareness of the side effects. According to “teenagers at risk for use of performance enhancers” journal article, 76% of the teens who responded to the survey could not identify any negative side effects of steroids (Schneider.M, 2004). Another study in the Sydney Morning Herald’s “Steroid Use Soars among young men” article, the 2013 needle syringe program survey, by the Kirby Institute at the University of NSW, found 74 per cent of people in NSW who started injecting illicit substances in the past three years had sought out performance- and image-enhancing drugs, compared with only 27 per cent in 2003. This increase of steroid use may ...
The most famous of these drugs are anabolic steroids, which are, as defined by the Controlled Substances Act issued by the Food and Drugs Administration under the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, any drug or hormonal substance chemically and pharmacologically related to testosterone that promotes muscle growth. Patient with medical prescriptions are allowed to take steroids to treat some diseases such as delayed puberty. However, the use of anabolic steroids should be stopped because it comes with high risk on the level of physical and mental health.
There are many different types of steroids being produced and used everyday in America. Steroids are any synthetic hormones that your body produces naturally such as birth control used by millions around the world and cortisone which reduces the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, redness, and swelling . Anabolic steroids are the ones that I will be talking about they are made for the male sex hormone called testosterone which tells the body to increase muscle size and strength, it also allows for faster muscle recovery. Anabolic steroids will not automatically make you the next Mr. or Mrs. Universe. Those who use Anabolic steroids usually train there muscle much longer and harder then those who don't. The Anabolic steroids only give them the ability to push there muscles far beyond what they would regularly be able to and recover much faster. This is not without saying that there are no side effects to such an amazing drug. In men steroids can cause shrinkage of the testicles, decrease in sperm count (that can lead to being sterile), impotence, prostate enlargement, Gynecomastia (appearance of female breast on male), and acne which are all reversible when ...
Anabolic steroids are drugs containing, or hormone-like substances, that are used to increase strength and promote muscle growth. They were first developed in the 1930s in Europe to treat undernourished patients and to promote healing after surgery. Competitive weightlifters began using steroids in the 1950s as a way to increase their athletic performance. Use gradually spread throughout the world among athletes in other has been estimated that at least one in 15 male high school seniors in the United States--more than a half-million boys--has used steroids. Some are athletes attempting to increase their strength and size; others are simply youths attempting to speed up their growth to keep pace with their peers. In some countries, anabolic steroids are available over the counter. In the United States, a doctor's prescription is necessary.
Anabolic steroid use is very dangerous and illegal in the USA. Steroid abuse is where danger comes into play. Anabolic steroids can be used safely with many positive effects and minimize the side effects if used safely, and in moderation. "I used steroids. It was a risky thing to do, but I have no regrets. It was what I had to do to compete. The danger with steroids is overusage. I only did it before a difficult competition – for two months, but not for a period of time that could harm me. And then afterward, it was over. I would stop. I have no health problems, no kidney damage or anything like that from using them." (Schwarzenegger) The positive side effects of steroids include increase in the male sex hormone (testosterone); which spikes improved recovery rate, increase in euphoria, gain in strength and size, increase in sex drive, and beco...
Anabolic steroids also have long-term consequences legally. Anabolic steroids are classified as controlled substances under U.S. federal law and the laws of many states (Collins). Since the non-medical possession or sale of anabolic steroids is illegal, strength athletes must not only consider the possible health risks but also the potential legal consequences of involvement (Collins). Many athletes who take or sell anabolics have no clue as to what might happen if they were to be caught by law enforcement. According to Rick Collins, in 1991 Congress placed anabolic steroids into schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act. Under this legislation steroids are defined as, “any drug or hormonal substance, chemically and pharmacologically related to Testosterone that promotes muscle growth” (Collins). There is a maximum of 1 year in prison and a $1,000 fine for using or buying steroid. The penalty for trafficking for a 1st offense is a maximum of 5 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. The penalty for a 2nd offense for trafficking the punishment above doubles (Collins).
There are several types of steroids. Steroids are in your body to help your body with stress and puberty; there are medical steroids and these are taken for pain, asthma, or a skin problem but, these aren’t the steroids that athletes are using to get ahead of the opponent. Athletes take anabolic steroids and they are artificially produced hormones. They are taken in forms of pills, injections, or powders. Steroids are illegal if you don’t have a prescription in your possession.
Forty-eight percent of high school students use steroids to improve athletic performance. Steroids can increase performances for athletes but steroids also affect the mind and character of the person. Some effects of steroids are impaired learning and hearing, violent behavior, and overly aggressive behavior. When women take steroids they start to show signs of masculinity such as deepening of the voice, increase in body and facial hair also the skin starts to roughen. Anabolic steroids give the one who takes them an unfair advantage in athletic competition. The advantage that they receive is not the same as natural born characteristics of ability.
