Methods of Persuasion
When one thinks of government controversy, you cannot help but think of the United States. This issue is usually about how the government deals with one’s rights. Throughout history there have been many that have struggled for freedom against our so-called controversial government. Three writers each had their own specific experience with this government. Although each of these arguments relies on different methods of persuasion, Henry Thoreau, Virginia Wolf, and Fredrick Douglas all suggested that there is definitely something wrong with the United States’ system of government. The following essay will address these author’s arguments and discuss how the role of each writers’ methods of persuasion played an important role in convincing the readers as well as getting their attention.
After spending a night in jail Henry Thoreau talked about the problem with the government and how they dealt with rights. The reason he was put in jail was because he refused to pay taxes that he believed was being spent on the Mexican War. Throughout the text he shows how much he disliked the way government was going. Thoreau had a strong belief that the system was going the wrong way and the only way to put it back on track was to rebel against the rules, just as he had. A persuasive speech is a specific type of speech in which the speaker has a goal of convincing the audience to accept his or her point of view. (Boundless, 2016). This kind of speech, therefore calls on the speaker to come up with ways that makes it possible to attain the positive conviction results. According to Robert Cialdini, the six (6) identified key principles that ensure positive results are Reciprocity, Scarcity, Authority, Commitment and consistency, Consensus and Liking (Saylor Academy , 2016)
Identity is the essential core of who we are as individuals, the conscious experience of the self-inside.
What influences a person’s identity? Does one get an identity when they are able to differentiate right from wrong, or are they born with it? There is not one thing that gives a person their identity, there are however, many different factors that contribute to one’s identity. From Contemplation in a World of Action written by Thomas Merton, Merton advocates identity by stating that “A person does not simply “receive” his or her identity. Identity is much more than the name or features one is born with. True identity is something people must create for themselves by making choices that are significant and that require a courageous commitment in the face of challenges. Identity means having ideas and values that one lives by” (Merton). Concurring with Merton a person is not given their identity at birth or while developing as an embryo, rather it is something that you create for yourselves over the course of life through decisions and actions made by the individual. During the time of Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr., freedom for African-Americans was relative terminology in the fact that one was during slavery and the other during the Civil Rights era. “Civil Disobedience,” written by Thoreau, analyzes the duty and responsibility of citizens to protest and take action against such corrupt laws and other acts of the government. Likewise, King conveys to his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” audience that the laws of the government against blacks are intolerable and that civil disobedience should be used as an instrument of freedom. Both writers display effective usage of the pathos and ethos appeal as means to persuade their audience of their cause and meaning behind their writing, although King proves to be more successful in his execution.
Before beginning the explanation of how an identity is formed, one must understand what an identity is. So, what is identity? To answer this, one might think of what gives him individuality; what makes him unique; what makes up his personality. Identity is who one is. Identity is a factor that tells what one wants out of life and how he is set to get it. It tells what kind of a person one is by the attitude and persona he has. And it depends upon the mixture of all parts of one’s life including personal choices and cultural and societal influences, but personal choices affect the identity of one more than the others.
Whether in business or casual communication, there are times when it is the goal of one or both parties to convince the other of a specific viewpoint. In such instances, one must be effective in presenting the view and why it should be valued over others. Robert Cialdini tells us that by following six principles attempts at persuasion can be made more effective (as cited by McLean, 2010). This paper will define the six principles and briefly discuss each of them. Then, an example will be provided, illustrating how they can be applied in context.
When I ponder about policy tools and which one I believe is of most importance; I choose suasion. Trying to persuade groups or individuals to think/do a specific action or keep them from behaving a certain way is not only important; it’s a prerequisite for being successful in life. I hold suasion to be the most important policy tool because of how much weight that can transfer from leader to follower using it as conveyance. Successful leaders can direct their followers with simple incentives that alter the way someone can behave or think; the suasion tool is what seals the situation that can either sway people towards you or away. I feel that as an educator in today’s schools, our successful principals are the individuals that use this tool to their advantage that can either create unity or spark revolt. Suasion is the process of influencing someone’s behavior to either change or discourages them from thinking or committing an act. There are many examples of instances where this is tool used; from anti-smoking campaigns in health clinics to anti-junk food advertisements in today’s school cafeterias and hallways. This tool is flexible in the fact that someone can be either ‘pushed-into’ a decision or kept from making a decision based on persuasive means. Some people may not care for an incentive or any kind; they may just want to think or feel differently on subject matter; suasion can accelerate this.
Identity is a group of characteristics, data or information that belongs exactly to one person or a group of people and that make it possible to establish differences between them. The consciousness that people have about themselves is part of their identity as well as what makes them unique. According to psychologists, identity is a consistent definition of one’s self as a unique individual, in terms of role, attitudes, beliefs and aspirations. Identity tries to define who people are, what they are, where they go or what they want to be or to do. Identity could depend on self-knowledge, self-esteem, or the ability of individuals to achieve their goals. Through self-analysis people can define who they are and who the people around them are. The most interesting point about identity is that some people know what they want and who they are, while it takes forever for others to figure out the factors mentioned before. Many of the individuals analyzed in this essay are confused about the different possible roles or positions they can adopt, and that’s exactly the reason they look for some professional help.
An identity is more than just a name. Sometimes an identity is the first thing and possible the only thing a person notices about one or the other. A person's identity can represent their culture, their race and sometimes, even possible their family background. My identity is what represents me. For those who does not know me personally but knows my name, knows my identity. This identity is what people will recognize me as for now and possible for ever.
Identity, an ambiguous idea, plays an important part in today’s world. To me identity can be defined as who a person is or what differentiates one person from another. Identity would be a person’s name, age, height, ethnicity, personality, and more. A quote by Anne Sexton states “It doesn't matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was”(Anne Sexton). This quote helps me define identity because I believe it is saying that identity is what people are remembered by. When some people think of identity, words such as, uniqueness, distinctiveness, or individuality may come to mind. However, I disagree with this because when I think of identity I think of mimicry, self-consciousness, or opinions.
There are millions of words across the globe that are used to describe people and uncover their identity, but what is identity? How can you begin to describe something that varies so greatly from one human being to another? Can you create a universal meaning for a word describing human concepts that people often fail to define for themselves? Of course there isn't one definition to define such a word. It is an intricate aspect of human nature, and it has a definition just as complex.
Identity. What is identity? One will say that it is the distinct personality of an individual. Others will say that identity is the behavior of a person in response to their surrounding environment. At certain points of time, some people search for their identity in order to understand their existence in life. In regards, identity is shaped into an individual through the social trials of life that involve family and peers, the religious beliefs by the practice of certain faiths, and cultural awareness through family history and traditions. These are what shape the identity of an individual.
A person can have more than one identity to be recognized as but when identity are thought of, people will mostly focus on the external markers of identity; what we can see on our self, physically.
Finally, the liking principle is one that will often be used in the art of persuasion. This can be used effectively, where a product can be seen as “likable” if for example it has been endorsed by someone perceived to be physically attractive or perhaps someone that demonstratives the behaviors of a friend, such as showing similar traits or someone that can be related to.
In my opinion, persuasion is the process of presenting your main idea to an audience and getting that audience to accept that idea as truth. Social psychologist Robert Cialdini penned these six principles of persuasion that are tools in helping you to move your audience closer toward accepting your idea or thought; the principles are Reciprocity, Scarcity, Authority, Commitment & Consistency, Consensus, and Liking (McLean, 2010, p. 538-540). In this essay, I will provide definitions for each principle of persuasion. Also, I will provide a situation where I was tasked with persuading someone at work to do something that I needed help with. Lastly, I will evaluate my application of the six principles of persuasion.
