The Incident of Mad Cow Disease
Over an incident in a British area when everyone became sick. The government said that there was no connection exists between any human illness and mad cow disease, the incurable dementia that has killed 160,000 British cows since 1985. On March 20, however, a somber secretary Dorrell faced the legislative body, and the nation, and proceeded to eat his every words. A government advisory committee, he explained, had concluded that mad cow disease was indeed the “most likely” cause of a recent outbreak in young British adults of a similar fatal disease.
The announcement was an embarrassing about-face for the government. It stunned and angered the British people, and sent shockwaves through Europe and around the world. Beef went untouched in supermarkets by alarmed shoppers, and the chairman of the government’s advisory committee said that victims could number in the hundreds of thousands.
Are they still crazy after all these years? An international news released in March, Earthsave joined with the physicians committee for responsible medicine (PCRM) in Washington, DC to draw attention to mad cow disease. The release also sought to counter the mistaken, albeit widely reported notion that beef can be safe if only we somehow purge the meat supply of contaminants and contagions, such as the infectious agent responsible for mad cow disease. Is it safe? The fact is, when cows are healthy, eating them isn’t. According to numerous studies by noted researchers, too many people worldwide are already suffering and dying from deadly substances found in beef, as well as in poultry, pork, fish, and dairy products. These ingredients, including saturated fat and cholesterol, occur almost exclusively in foods of animal origin, and have been implicated time and again in the epidemic of heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes and obesity that plague Western nations.
To stimulate discussion in the heart of America’s cattle country on mad cow disease and meat consumption’s human toll, EarthSave and PCRM attempted to place in the Des Moines [Iowa] register newspaper an ad discussing this situation. The newspaper refused to print the $1,000 ad, however, deeming it unsuitable for their publication. ...the human food chain. By the mid-1980’s, large numbers of people in Britain were unwittingly eating beef burgers, cheap mince and pies infected with BSE.
In 1997 new animal studies suggested that vCJD could be transmitted through blood raising fears of a much wider problem. White blood cells, which form part of the immune system and are found in the lymph glands, were isolated as one of the high-risk tissues for BSE infection. As a result of this concern, the British government required the removal of white blood cells from donated blood.
So does this disease still cause fear for most people? Well the truth is, we will never know until all the scientist finally pin point exactly what the cause and situation of the disease is. And if we can find a fast cur for the disease then less people will stop worrying about their meat. But look on the bright side of it, at least the demand and popularity of chicken has gone up. You know what that means, that’s right, now the government has more money so they can do more testing on mad cow disease. So with that in mind, I just want to say. If it can happen to cows then why not chicken, lets not think too far into this disease.

In the area of decision making I believe myself to be more Thinking than Feeling. An example of the thinking preference can be seen in my role as a consistent, objective disciplinarian. My firm-mindedness in this area has produced children that are a joy to teach as well as to take out in public. Our family receives numerous compliments on how well behaved and delightful our children are. I believe it is my desire for justice and my clarity in rules and expectations that make this achievable for my children.

During the Progressive era, consumer safety was a hot issue. In Upton Sinclair’s book The Jungle, there were many disturbing things the American people learned about the meat packing industry. After people saw that their meat had dead rats and tuberculosis many did not want to buy any meat. People were disgusted by the things that they could buy without knowing what it was. This brought about stricter health codes and made the consumers have a little more peace of mind.

It does not pick innocent or guilty. The people choose it. Mad Cow will either stop a person in his train of thought or fly past like a busy bee. Whether a person sees this brain ravaging disease as a threat or a joke, it is up to each individual.

Publishing the novel led to new federal food safety laws such as the Pure Food and Drug act and the Meat Inspection Act. At the turn of the twentieth century “Muckraking” had become a very popular practice. This was where “muckrakers” would bring major problems to the publics attention. One of the most powerful pieces done by a muckraker was the book “The Jungle”, by Upton Sinclair. The book was written to show the horrible working and living conditions in the packing towns of Chicago, but what caused a major controversy was the filth that was going into Americas meat. Thinking is when we make careful decisions with an analysis and thought about processes. With thinking we may weight our pros and cons and make a justified decision. Feeling is when we react off our emotions. We have a battle in our mind when our feelings and thoughts don’t coincide with each other. A weakness with the personality trait of thinking is that our thinking can be altered by outside factors. We may have things that happens that affects our judgement. We have to question if we are thinking and conforming to facts or just opinions. At work I tend to think processes through so I can teach or coach someone else to develop. What the American culture is used to is eating three meals with a few snacks in between a day, and two out of the three meals usually involve eating meat. Most people don’t realize the risks of eating meat. Today’s medical experts say that avoiding meat helps you avoid saturated fat. They have found out from studies that women who eat meat daily have a fifty percent greater risk of developing heart disease than vegetarian women and a sixty-eight percent greater risk in men (staff writer). People may not know about serious diseases meat can obtain such as, mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease. In the September 1999 issue of the Emerging Infectious Diseases, approximately 76 million food borne illnesses- resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths occur in the United States each year from improperly cooked or diseased meat (Licher). That is a lot! You can also get salmonella poisoning from meat. People think that the problems come from eating red meat and are opting for fish over steak, but new evidence proves that fish can cause health problems too, risks that can’t be cooked away. This is a growing problem called histamine poisoning (Peck). Children are learning at a younger age that they don’t like meat, maybe because they don’t like the taste, or maybe it’s because they have a fear of eating their favorite cartoon or movie hero. In Jackson’s “The Lottery” (1948), she lulls the reader into thinking that the story is going to end on a positive note by using three aspects of literary devices: setting, symbolism and imagery. She uses setting to make the reader stray away from any negatives and start off the story on a positive note, symbolism to depict a positive scenery, and imagery in which she uses descriptive words or phrases for the reader to create mental images and distracts the reader from focusing on the main event of the story. In turn, the reader doesn’t anticipate the ending; resulting in a final effect of shock and horror towards the ending of the story.
The title of the story is “The Lottery” and the title is very ironic. When looking at the title readers may think there is a character who is about to become rich and have a better lifestyle. There is a lot more that is happening than what the title expects you to think. Another example of irony is the setting of the story. “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. With such a beautiful and nice day going along with nice weather you would not think that death would end up occurring. At the end of the story when Mrs. Hutchinson is chosen for the lottery, it is ironic that it does not upset her that she was chosen.
