The industrialization and technology of the world’s higher income nations has a negative effect on the plight of the world’s poorer nations. The high-income nations’ industrialization encourages child labor, poor living conditions in exchange for material things, and higher world pollution. When the higher income nations became industrialized in the 1800’s, the lower income nations were slow to catch up. Now, the low and middle-income countries are trying to catch up to the rapid growth that the world powers had. One drawback to this is many families, to earn as much money as possible, encourage their children to go to work in sweat shops, for little pay. This puts them at a great risk of accident, and shortens their life span by causing them to toil endlessly in a hot, vermin infested, disease rampant factory whilst still children. The sociological inequality illustrated by the norm of living for children in different countries is astounding. In the United States, children spend their summers in front of a television or computer, swimming in the public pool, or “hanging out” with their friends. Children in low-income countries, such as those in Southeast Asia spend their summer days in a factory for ten hours, making tennis shoes on insufficient food, and for few dollars a day. In recent history, farming in America has changed dramatically, and Naylor’s farm is representative of many in the American Corn Belt. Though it began growing a variety of crops and keeping livestock too, Naylor now only plants corn and soybeans. In Naylor’s grandfather’s days, the farm fed the whole family with just enough left over for twelve others. Now, Naylor indirectly feeds an estimated 129 people, but this does not mean his farm is any more successful. In fact, Naylor’s farm cannot financially support his family.
The policy “No Child Left Behind (NCLB)” is a policy where Federal legislation has mandated that children be tested, and where there is compliance with standards. Simply means, that all children must meet standards. The standards are defined by the states, and all children will be subject to testing, starting from as early as third grade. The students will be tested annually, in order to ensure that they are getting the type of education that they are entitled to, as determined by their performance on standardized tests.

Chaucer introduces a woman whom he simply calls, the Wife of Bath, who tells of her five husbands. This woman is portrayed as very cunning, manipulative, and smart. She loves sex and she can’t wait for her sixth marriage even though she calls marriage a “woe.” She tells the entourage how she wishes to control her men and she tells them of the cunning and trickery ways in which she got her husbands to listen to her. She was an absolute expert. In her tale, the Wife of Bath tells about a knight who has to go on a quest to find what it is that all women want, or else he dies. He goes in search and comes upon an old lady who tells him that all women want to control their men and they never want their husband to be above them. The knight ends up keeping his head, but because of a promise he made, he must marry the old woman. He reluctantly does and on their wedding night, he insults her to which the old lady has some very wise words in response. “When the knight realizes that the words the old woman says are true regarding the lack of wealth and beauty, he turns to find the old woman turned into a beautiful young maiden” (The Wife of Bath says, “cut short the lives of those who won’t be government by their wives; and all old, angry niggards of their pence” (The Wife of Bath’s Tale). In the article “Understanding Alternative Choices of Handmade Cosmetics in Postmodern Consumer Society” Pernilla Arbajian and Yaran Di discuss how consumers perceive purchasing handmade cosmetics. Di defines “Handmade Cosmetics” as, “cosmetics made by human and made from natural ingredients, as opposed to cosmetics that are mass-produced, machine-made and made from chemical additives” (Di, 2014). The Bee’s Knees definitively can be described using this definition as a handmade cosmetic company. Companies today are aware of consumers being scattered and varied about their beliefs. This study goes through the steps and processes that consumers go through when deciding if a product if handmade or natural (regardless of how it is actually made) and how consumers assign meanings to their products of interest in their daily lives.

During Chaucer’s time, there were major issues of class, nobility, and money. During 1350, there was a very rigid class structure. During this time, people who had more money were considered of higher value. Also, people who were poor were not considered of great value. During the Wife of Bath’s Tale, the old woman challenges the young knight about nobility. She argues that men who are of nobility are supposed to be gentlemen, or are a nice guy. Also, she says that men cannot be born a gentleman, just because you are born to a particular family doesn’t mean that you are a nice guy. She says this in the poem by saying, “but gentleness, as you will recognize, is not annexed in nature to possessions, men fail in living up to their professions; but fire never ceases to be fire. God knows you’ll often find, if you enquire some lording full of villainy and shame. If you would be esteemed for the mere name of having been by birth a gentleman and stemming from some virtuous, noble clan, and do not live yourself by gentle deed or take your fathers’ noble code and creed, you are no gentleman, thought duke or earl. Survival starts with an individual’s ability to endure, and ultimately progresses to an entire species’ ability to subsist. Selfishness is often viewed as morally wrong, however it may be necessary for individuals to think of themselves before others, in order to put them in a position to be able to help the others. In The wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale, Chaucer suggests that we shouldn’t have different classes throughout communities. He says that having lower, middle, and upper classes isn’t right and that a man’s worth shouldn’t be decided because of how much money he has. “Such as descends from ancient wealth and worth. If that’s the claim you make for gentlemen such arrogance is hardly worth a hen.
