Evolution of the Characters in The Color Purple
The most important aspect of The Color Purple is the growth and maturity of each individual. There is a huge transition of many of the characters from the beginning to the end of the novel. This evolution of the characters is a recurring theme that runs throughout the novel and can be tracked by Celie’s letters. The women struggle for freedom in a society where they are inferior to men. Towards the end of the novel one can sense the slow evolution towards the increasing empowerment of women.
The strongest example of women’s empowerment is Celie’s character. She’s a victim of racism, men, sexual roles, and social injustices. Celie begins the novel completely powerless, repeatedly raped and beaten. The only person she can turn to is G-d. She is extremely disempowered by sex. Celie describes sex as something that is done to her, but never as something that she enjoys. Thus, sex with Mr.____ reduces her status to that of an object that lies there and waits for it to be over.
The turning point in Celie’s life is the arrival of Shug Avery, who teaches her things she never would have known. Her arrival first places Celie at the low point of her life because now, along with everything else, she becomes a servant to Shug. What she didn’t know was that Shug’s arrival actually acts as a catalyst to her own empowerment. Celie says, “For the first time in my life, I feel just right.”
Shug Avery is very different from most of the character’s portrayed in the novel. She’s much stronger then most of the women and stands up for what she believes. Shug definitely wasn’t the typical woman of those times. She was a figure representing female blues performers such a...

...nd obeys Harpo just like Celie behaves and it’s so obvious that Celie is even able to notice it. She tells Squeak, “Make Harpo call you by your real name” but Squeak has no response and just looks at Celie puzzled.
When Squeak is first introduced in the novel as Harpo’s girlfriend she gets her front teeth knocked out by Sophia. After this she still stays with Harpo. Furthermore, she even goes to the mayor to support Sophia and attempt to get her out of prison. After being raped by the mayor, Squeak declares to everyone, “My name Mary Agnes.” She is able to recuperate and bounce back from her uncle raping her rather than be defeated. She asserts herself as an individual and stipulates respect by insisting she be called by her real name.

Just because two things have something in common does not mean that they are the same. Linda M. Hasselstrom’s story is about the events that led up to her deciding that she needs to carry a gun. Max Brooks’ writing tells readers about the history of zombies and their growing popularity. Both of these writings explain the causes of specific events, Hasselstrom deciding to carry a gun and why zombies are so popular. These two pieces of writing, Linda M. Hasselstrom’s “A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” and Max Brooks’ “The Movies That Rose from the Grave”, differ in information, format, and purpose.
There has been controversy in the world about police brutality and whether police have used excessive force to apprehend a subject is increasing. Police brutality has been around for a long time, but it just now televised. In the late 19th century, the issue of police brutality was often tied to business owners’ efforts to break up strikes by workers attempting to organize and form labor unions, also on a day known as Bloody Sunday where a group of peaceful protesters were literally beaten to the ground, sprayed with tear gas, and water hose by the police (“Police Brutality”). Even in 2015 in Baltimore Freddie Gray, 25-year-old African-American male, died while in police custody due to injuries in the spine and in some parts of Baltimore the
First of all how can I skip the the story that was also the title of the book. A high school music teacher started showing strange behavior. Like not being able to identify students, personal friends, and even his own wife. He could still see them, but he couldn’t tell who they were by looking at there face, only by voice or looking at distinguishing
He was raised a farm boy, the youngest of eight children in his family. Mays provides evidence of his exposure at a young to the segregated and divided south, where it is said that he mentions his first memory being the 1898 Phoenix Riot where “he recalled, white vigilantes murdered his cousin.” 4 As mentioned before, Mays’ obsession with education started at a young age – he loved education to the point of tears if he’d ever had to miss a day due to rain. The segregated south prohibited Mays from excelling in his educational studies - by the age of 17 years old, Mays had only been to school 4 months out of each year. Some of his early struggles regarding his pursuit included poverty, as well as his father’s wish for him to continue working in the farm. Despite these roadblocks, Benjamin Mays graduated from his high school as valedictorian of the Black South Carolina State College in 1916. Mays would further his education by pursuing a college career – he felt that his educational gain would prove to himself and others that he has the ability to compete with white people of
“If there is any period one would desire to be born in, is it not the age of Revolution; when the old and the new stand side by side...when the glories of the old can be compensated by the rich possibilities of the new era? This time...is a very good one.”
The sisterhood between Celie and Sofia teaches Celie that women are just as powerful as men. In a feminist society, women have the same rights that men have. Feminism is a belief system that allows women to be equal in all types of ways, such as work ethic’s, politics and even financially. In most cultures women have practically the same job as a man and make much less than him. Research indicated from the Institute For Women’s Policy Research states that “On average women earn less than men, in virtually every single occupation ...
The consequences of his decisions would manifest in two ways: Andrew Jackson's abuse of presidential power and the nullification crisis. Jackson vetoed more bills than any other president, and was accused of being dicatorial by his enemies. He notably ignored the Supreme Court's decision on the Cherokee issue, ordering federal troops to remove them from Florida anyway. He also destroyed the national bank, without a thought to the negative impact of removing the only stable credit in the country. He earned the nickname "King Andrew I" because, like a king, he did what he deemed best for the country and what was best for his "friends"(through the spoils system), without consulting the other branches of government he was supposed to be working with. Had it not been for the increased federal power the era of good feelings yielded, Jackson would have been forced to stop his abuse before causing the Trail of Tears and Bank Panic of

Within The Color Purple by Alice Walker, women are treated as inferior to men therefore they must obey them. Through the strength and wisdoms Celie gains from other women, she learns to overcome her oppression and realize her self worth as a woman. The women she has met throughout her life, and the woman she protected since young, are the people that helped her become a strong independent woman. Sofia and Shug were there for Celie when she needed someone to look up to and depend on. Nettie was able to push Celie to become a more educated, independent person. The main source of conflict in this book is Celie’s struggle with becoming an independent woman who needs not to rely on a man. Throughout the book we see her grow as a person and become independent in many ways through her experiences with the powerful women in her life.
Who does not want more money? The author even asks, “What about the statistics showing that college graduates make more money?” Almost all of the highest paid jobs in the country require a college degree. For example, a surgeon is one of the highest paying jobs in America, and it requires a college degree. There are occasionally a few exceptions, 1 out of seven people who have a high school degree or less make as much as college graduates. Those are not very good odds! The recent polls say college graduates make around 17,500 dollars more annually than those who have no degree. Just think about all a person could buy with 17,500 dollars, that is enough to buy a
The Ancient Egyptians called their country Kemet, which means “Black Land.” The dark soil from the Nile River was very fertile. The Nile overflowed at the same time every year, leaving farmers with very fertile soil. The Nile provided much needed water for their crops during the dry season by using their irrigation system. The Nile River also provided the Egyptians with drinking water, and a way for them to travel, allowing them to explore and trade. In addition, the desert around the river was called “Red Land” by the Egyptians. This is where they lived, grew and prospered. The desert provided much gold for the Egyptians to trade with other countries or to keep for themselves. They brought back silver from Syria, cedar wood, oils, and horses from Lebanon, copper from Cyprus, gems from Afghanistan, ebony, wood, and ivory from Africa, and incense from Punt.
Revenge of the Goldfish used the complementary colors of blue and orange with bright orange fish and a blue bedroom. The use of these contrasting colors make the fish ‘pop’ in the photograph while the blue seems to fade into the back and doesn’t stand out as much. Skoglund’s A Breeze at Work uses complementary colors as well. The entire office space is a rusty brown-orange color with blue leaves. These contrasting colors make the blue leaves stand out in this particular photograph. In another piece of art titled Radioactive Cats, Skoglund uses colors in a slightly different way to make the animals in the photograph stand out. In this work of art, there is an elderly couple in their all grey kitchen. The only true color in the photograph aside from the human’s skin, is the bright green cats that are dispersed throughout the room. This image does not use complementary colors, but the colors do repel each other, resulting in the green cats standing out more than the grey
Ethnicity and appearance has become a tremendous problem in the media due to the fact that they try to use it as a power to control creativity of abstaining the truth in media. According to journalist Nishijima, A, she refers to the Oscars and explains that it is very absurd how the media is slowly progression in lacking diversity. This was recognized when watching the Oscars and seeing that based off predominantly white nominees. Nishijima quotes “Boone Isaacs decl...
[This] phase of the campaign was created to debunk the stereotype that only thin is beautiful” (“The Dove® campaign for real beauty”, n.d.). This part of the campaign was monumental because “all women in the ad are real.” (Fielding et al., 2008). Because the concept of real women was implemented, women were able to relate their own self-identity, flaws and overall body image to the women on the advertisements. The use of “real people” in Dove’s campaign helps people realize that average citizens can still be as beautiful as the people that are consistently portrayed in the usual advertisements. These real people offer a connection to an individual’s everyday body issue struggles and allows Dove’s audience to recognize the fact that beauty should not be limited to western societies view. Ultimately, this section of the campaign allows viewers to make personal connections to the models in the advertisements which furthers Dove’s intentions of the Real Beauty
The third perspective is humanistic, which is primarily focused on making oneself and the world innately better. In a journal by E.M Robertis, says, “Humanism is being accused of having con- tributed to selfishness in American culture”. This statement I disagree with however. I think that could be a valid argument saying that the approach creates us to focus too much on ourselves causing us to be selfish. My argument to this would be that this approach is to, yes, help us become better, but to also help the world around us become better as well. The fact that we can help ourselves become better and help the world do the same makes this not become so internalized and selfish. I connect with this approach because of this. I always have strived
