Adaptive leadership is becoming widespread in the United States Army amongst junior officers in leadership positions that require quick thinking and innovation. Leonard Wong discusses how the versatile and unpredictable enemy and situations in Iraq produces adaptable junior officers. These officers are learning to make decisions under chaotic conditions and are becoming more mentally agile. The Army is changing. The Army is transforming its capabilities in the war in Iraq to be effective and successful. General Schoomaker states that we will not accomplish our goals as a nation in the 21st century unless our Army becomes much more agile but with the capacity for long term, sustained level of conflict. The Army is in the process of eliminating its old ways of war, it has to become somewhat of a decathlete. Trained for multiple events across a broad spectrum not just one event like a track athlete.
Leadership in the Army in a broad sense can be related to the National Basketball Association. Athletes are becoming more and more versatile and new ideas and strategies are being developed. The new fast paced tempo is requiring all positions on the court to be capable of carrying out all skills of the game. Dribbling, rebounding, and shooting are no longer left up to just the point guard, shooting guard, or the two big men down low. At anytime any player on the floor can find himself in a situation where he might be required to perform these tasks. Thu...
The Army requires its members to adhere to prolonged training and learn specialized skills. From the moment a soldier transitions from the civilian sector into the Army, he is indoctrinated with training. Regardless of rank, the Army demands each soldier to be technically proficient and mentally competent in order to be qualified in a respective Military Occupation Specialty. As a soldier progresses in his military career, he is required to continue his education and training. Army leaders are expected and required to continue developing their skills through academic studies, operational experience, and institutional training. An opposing view argues that anyone can learn these skills; however, statistics show less than 0.5% of the population serves in the armed forces, indicating a soldier is a rare mix of intelligence and character.1 These lessons are necessary qualifications to achieve what General Martin Dempsey describes as “effectiveness rather than efficiency.”2 Much like the profession of medicine which must heal, the media which must provide truth, and law which must provide justice, the profession of arms must provide secur...
Ture education is when a child is given the needed skills to achieve their goals and survive the world. Teachers are meant to teach in a respectable manner and try in their utmost ability to help the students become knowledgeable of the world and skills in certain subjects. In the United States, the education system is purpose is this, but is not reaching it’s purpose, instead the country is leading to it’s own downfall. To others, the education system is a work in progress so it’s expected to be slightly off the goal of a true education. Although some may believe that the education system is a work in progress, even with the added “improvements” of the Common Core Standards, it is a broken system and doesn’t reach the
“Feminism is both an intellectual commitment and a political movement that seeks justice for women and the end of sexism in all forms” (Baptiste). Just as in the past, feminism continues to act as a controversial issue among men and women. In the 1960’s, women finally addressed workplace inequity and created woman organizations to achieve equality. In the early 1960’s, the Equal Pay Act and the Civil Rights Act set a milestone for women’s progression towards work equality. Though women have made great leaps towards true equality, women still face many challenges and continue to be categorized as the subservient gender.
We can identify three major cultural dimensions that help us to understand what leaders must focus on as they guide the transition of the Army. First, professional Identity, which is guided by Soldiers at all levels who are striving for excellence in their functional specialty, i.e., HR Sergeants. Soldiers who have goals and ideals of the Army to ethically put service and duty first. HR Sergeants are trained and well educated in their field. They are taught to put Soldiers first and have great customer support skills. Second, community, the sense in which Soldiers stop thinking about “I” and start thinking “we”. The bond among units who not only believe in cohesion with Soldiers, but their families too. The HR Sergeants are there to take care of Soldiers when financial issues arise with them or their families and don’t back down until the situation is solved. Last, hierarchy, which leads to order and control and provides Soldiers with moral reference and a sense of direction. The HR Sergeant has the mentality of mission first, knowing who to contact at the next level for assistance helps get the mission
Desdemona and Emilia were labeled as “property” towards the men in Othello. In Othello, Desdemona was treated as a piece of property during the Brabantio-Othello dispute. Brabantio angrily confronts Othello accusing him of blackmailing his daughter Desdemona into marriage. Brabantio states, “O thou foul thief, where hast thou stow'd my daughter?” (1.2.64-65). Brabantio refers to Othello as a “foul thief” taking his possession and authority of his daughter from him. Desdemona further is depicted as a token of exchange by Othello’s romantic words. Othello comments, “Come, my dear love/The purchase made/ the fruits are to ensue/ that profit’s yet to come ’tween me and you.” (2.3.10-11). Othello declares that the marriage was in fact an investment and a favor for Desdemona, concluding she’s has to satisfy her husband’s fancy. Emilia is portrayed as Iago’s possession within the play. Iago is a vindictive character that has no remorse for women, especially his wife. Iago is angered, accusing Othello of the following convictions: passing him on a lieutenant position, giving it to someone unworthy and his suspicion of possible adultery between Othello and his wife, Emilia. Iago calls out Othello for supposedly sleeping with his own possession. “And it is thought abroad that ’twixt my sheets/ He’s done my office” (1.3.324-325). Iago metaphorically describes Emilia as
The American civil war was an important event in the history of United States. It changed the internal structure of American society and had a greater impact than the revolution. The basis of the civil war was due to slavery. It overthrew the once dominated planter elite politically and its slaveholding class. During early decades of the nineteen-century the planters of American south were not about to follow the path of gradual emancipation that the northern states had raged. The economies of the south and north, continues to go in opposing directs.
Regardless of the career you choose in your life, whether it be an accountant or a Soldier in the United States Army, someone, somewhere most likely had an influence to bring you to that decision. The Army defines leadership as the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization (JP, p. 1). Now imagine you are a young Private, in one of the most dangerous places in Iraq and you have constant leadership changes, and not much support from your direct leadership. I am sure at this point you can imagine, it is not the best scenario to be in. Throughout the duration of this essay you will read about Sergeant First Class Rob Gallagher and Sergeant First Class Jeff Fenlason, their leadership abilities, and the techniques they attempted to use to resolve the issues in this Platoon that was in a downward spiral after losing many leaders to the hell of war.
Part 1, The Basics of Leadership, Chapter 1 covers Fundamentals of Leadership while Roles and Relationships are covered in Chapter 2. This section describes and depicts levels of Leadership. We as a military are set apart from other non-military professions in that Soldiers must be prepared to use deadly force and have the courage required to close with and destroy the enemy. All leaders, from non-commissioned officers and warrant officers, to commissioned officers, inherently possess a great responsibility. The repercussions of decisions and actions impact the lives of Soldiers and their families. Additionally, these decisions affect the battlefield environment including enemy and non-combatants, both military and
It is also Iago who views women as a form of ownership. He obviously sees his wife as a possession. This is evident as he shows no respect nor actual love towards her. ‘Twixt my sheets. He’s done my office’ (Othello: Act 1. Sc. 3. 15). He’s infatuated by revenge on Othello for thinking he slept with his wife Emilia. The text suggests that Iago displays the tiniest amount of love for Emilia. He insults her in public and towards the end kills her off. The reason for Iago’s rage can be argued that it is because of ‘The lusty moor. Hath leapt into my seat’ (Othello: Act 2, Sc 1. 13). Meaning that Othello has used something of Iago’s. And it drives him very mad. What glues Iago’s rage and his treatment of his wife is the fact that Iago describes his wife metaphorically, his office as well as his seat. He objectifies her and takes away her humanity. Ultimately for Iago to gain his revenge: he uses both female characters Desdemona and Emilia as pawns in his wicked game. Iago wishes to be ’evened with him, wife for wife’ (Othello: Act 2. Sc. 1. 13) which means sleeping with Desdemona, he believes that Othello and himself will then be equal in doing so. Iago doesn’t care about Desdemona and Emilia’s feelings especially when he’s creating his revenge. Iago is said to be the exact example of a character who take females as possessions. Through his words and his thoughts, he demonstrates the fact that women in both
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
When Othello summons Desdemona and dismisses Emilia, “Leave procreants alone . . .; / Cough or cry hem if anybody come. / Your mystery, your mystery! . . .” (IV.2.28-30), he not only dismisses Emilia, accuses Desdemona of infidelity, and betrays his own insane bitterness, but he converts the marriage into a brothel arrangement in which all three are involved, and by so doing establishes imaginative lines of connection with the role of Bianca and particularly with the Iago philosophy of sexual conduct. (331)
Throw your vile guesses in the devil’s teeth, from whence you have them. You are jealous now that this is from some mistress, some remembrance: no, in good troth, Bianca.”(Shakespeare 3.4.184-187). The men would speak to the women in very demanding tones. Bianca was the prostitute that loved Cassio. She was used by both Iago and Cassio in different ways. Iago for his plan and Cassio for his own pleasure. Cassio was especially rude to Bianca since we would never marry her, but would like to sleep with her. Bianca, in a way was seen as unimportant and was only used when convenient. She had a true love for Cassio, but he gave her nothing in return. He was ashamed of being around her in
The term “feminism” tends to have a negative connotation in today’s culture. Feminism is now focusing on female dominance and male disrespect. Women are fighting for equality, yet using personal bias to define equality, claiming identical rights for all will produce an equal culture. The mainstream feminist movement is using this corrupted view of equality to force rights of women. Contrary to popular belief, true feminism fights for true equality for women, as well as other people groups. The false view of feminism causes women to distort gender roles, dishonor themselves, and degrade men.
The focus of The Women’s Liberation Movement was idealized off The Civil Rights Movement; it was founded on the elimination of discriminary practices and sexist attitudes (Freeman, 1995). Although by the 1960s women were responsible for one-third of the work force, despite the propaganda surrounding the movement women were still urged to “go back home.” However the movement continued to burn on, and was redeveloping a new attitude by the 1970s. The movement was headed by a new generation that was younger and more educated in politics and social actions. These young women not only challenged the gender role expectations, but drove the feminist agenda that pursued to free women from oppression and male authority and redistribute power and social good among the sexes (Baumgardner and Richards, 2000).
Hunger and poverty have been a major problem in the world, which has being leading most people to death than cancer, Ebola, and malaria do. More than thousands of people die from hunger and poverty, and most of the people who suffer most are children below the age of ten. Hunger and poverty have contributed to the world food crisis that has an impact on the economy, the environment, and political issues. People living with hunger and poverty are more than those living a successful life in both developed and developing the world. Hunger makes victims live underweight, causing numerous of sickness to their health. Lack of
