Pity for Emily??? In the short story A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner there is a very interesting character. Her Name is Emily Grierson and she is a rich southern gentile. All her life it seems that she was raised at a standard that was above the rest. By living such a secluded and controlled life it set her up for the happenings in her future. When her father passed away she had nobody to tell her what to do and how to act. This was very devastating and she had a hard time dealing with change. So much so that she wouldn't let the police take the body of her father out of the house for three days after his death. The only thing that was constant in her house was the slave that was bound to serve her. In this writing I feel that the author takes an outside look at Emily to let you make your own decisions about her. This is a very good way of doing it because it leaves you with an open-ended judgment. You may feel a variety of ways about her, the first being that she is completely psychotic. This is the first and easiest conclusion to come up with. If you weren’t reading with much thought and analyzing the character it would be easy to feel this way. Back in 1200s, St. Thomas Aquinas has provided "five ways" to prove for the existence of God, which I am persuaded by, and hopefully others would see the same 'light' in this argument--unfortunately, it does not provide sufficient answers regarding the 'nature of God' (Bailey and Martin, 2011, 37). All five arguments share the "form of logic called syllogism," "initial premise, starting from the empirical facts," and the existence of "transcendent cause" to everything (Bailey and Martin, 2011, 25). Here, I will choose the second way, the argument of "efficient cause," which I feel it as the most compelling argument and sums up other arguments to demonstrate for the existence of God. 'God,' here is defined as the God introduced in the Bible of Christianity.
The main character in the short story “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner is Emily Grierson. She lives in Jefferson Mississippi, in a fictional county called Yoknapatawpha County. The people of Yoknapatawpha saw Miss Emily as "a small, fat woman" who was very cold, distant, and lived in her past. Her home "was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies...”. She lived in a little community that was changing and becoming more modern unlike her house. Her house, as Faulkner describes, "...smelled of dust and disuse-a close, dank smell"; "it was furnished in heavy, leather-covered furniture". The look of Emily’s home bothered Emily’s community along with many other things about her. Emily has a "hereditary obligation upon the town". She is from a family of wealth that brought tradition to Yoknapatawpha County. When the town started making modern changes fitting into the next generation Emily became stubborn and showed this by refusing to pay taxes to her county. Emily repeats, "I have no taxes in Jefferson" four times before dismissing the deputation. Thomas Robert Argiro, the author of a critical essay called “Miss Emily After Dark” states that, “[Emily]… struggles with personal grief, a restricted social life, socio-economic decline, and romantic misfortune…” (par.2). Miss Emily is misunderstood by the townspeople and is resistant to the changes around her as well in her life.
In a Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, we meet a young woman that is surrounded by death. As the story progresses we find more and more death and decay throughout Emily’s life. This leads to the theme of Death and Dying. Through-out the short story the theme of Death and Dying is represented through many symbols. These symbols include dust, the house and Emily herself. This essay will examine how each of these symbols represent Death and Dying.

When Emma plans her wedding to Charles, the readers learn: "Emma would have preferred to be married at midnight by torchlight" (p. 22). Instead, she settles for a traditional wedding. Charles adores Emma: "He was happy, without a care in the world…" (p. 28). Charles realized that he "possessed, for life, this pretty wife whom he adored" (p. 29). Emma, on the other hand, feels differently. Through the narrator, the readers learn her inner thoughts:
In the short story “A Rose for Emily” death plays a major role in developing the story. It also shows how the death of one person can change a city as a whole. However, if you compare this story to the life of the author, William Faulkner, you can see how death in his life can contribute to why he wrote the story the way he did. The death of the people is used to add to the meaning of the work altogether. William Faulkner’s experiences add meaning to his work, “A Rose for Emily,” through several deaths and Emily’s ultimate demise.

Acne is a skin condition that may occur due to hormonal changes during puberty or even during pregnancy. Some attribute acne to external factors like greasy cosmetics and unhealthy diet. The claims of a person’s diet affecting their acne has not been verified yet. \Miss Emily Grierson, the main character in Williams Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” removes herself from society and becomes a total recluse, refuses to progress with the passing of time, murders her lover, but continues to sleep with his corpse until her dying day. The behavior presented in Emily is a sign of mental illness. Throughout the story, Emily’s mental instability becomes apparent through her character. The house that she was raised in and died in, and the love she had for dead bodies lead to her mental illness eventually causing her death.
It identified one study where disadvantaged children were divided into 2 groups. The first group was provided with preschool and specific attention during the children 's early development. The second group did not receive support before kindergarten. The first group had a 20% higher graduation rate nearly 15 years later. It also identified another study done in poorer Title I schools that focused on early childhood and on parent mentorship. They experienced lower dropout rates and had 11% more students who were at risk of dropout graduate than their peer. This work also identifies students below the poverty line are at risk for pregnancy, incarceration, or having to work to support their families. All of these reasons can lead to the student failing to complete high school. The studies and statistics from this report will be used to support the solution offered in my thesis. They will provide evidence that schools that provide students with stability at an early age can increase the graduation rate of students in poverty.
There are many effects on society as a whole due to students that drop out of high school. The effects on the student who drops out are just as great as they are on society. “Of the 4 million students who enter high school every year, one million of them will drop out before graduation” (Whitaker, 2012). When an individual makes the conscious decision to drop out of high school, many times the decision is made without regard to the consequences that can ensue. There are many effects of the decision on the individual, their families, and society as a whole. The leading reasons for dropping out of high school surround academic difficulty and failure, poor attendance, being held back, disengagement from school, and other life factors (Convisor, n.d.). This is an indication that most of these teens do not think about (or sometimes even care about) how decisions made today will effect tomorrow. This paper is to inform the reader of the effects of students dropping out of high school. Included will be effects on the individuals, their families, and society.
