Lego Mindstorms
The non-commercial website Lego.com has been an enormous success providing Lego with a strong presence on the Internet. However, implementing a website capable of handling sales transactions requires a great deal more than a non-commercial site. The firm has implemented an ERP system which may provide some technical support for the website. The details of the ERP system are unknown at this time; however, the goal of implementing the system was to optimize the supply chain from production to distribution, which will be a significant opportunity for the E-Commerce project. Another important consideration is incorporating the ERP system into the E-Commerce transactions so that separate systems and processes are not necessary.
The Lego company enjoys worldwide brand recognition; ranking 5th in the global toy market behind such giants as Mattel Hasbro Sega and Nintendo. The Lego.Com website is among the top 10 sites for children. Both of these factors represent a significant strength for the firm over competitors. The firm has traditional sold to retailers and other middlemen and has little experience in direct consumer sales. This has been the case in the past the typical buyer of Lego’s products are not the consumers’ of the product. The firm currently generates 5 % of total sales from the catalog sales of its products. The catalog operations may provide supporting resources for direct sales logistics and experience in direct consumer sales. The firm has both financial and employee resources to support the E-Commerce implementation.
Lego’s philosophy underlies all company activities and supports to a large degree their branding strategy. The Lego vision “Idea, Exuberance and Values” requires that all Lego products stimulate children’s imagination, creativity, and are high quality products. The LEGO MINDSTORMS products as all products in Lego’s offerings align with the firms overall philosophy and represent a strength for the company. In conclusion, the Lego’s strengths include brand awareness, significant resources that are already in place all over the world, and experience in terms of the catalog operation and the issues arising from selling to children. Weaknesses include concerns of selling to an international market (marketing, legal, language, and currency), lack of experience in the area of E-Commerce, handling the logistics of distributing and direct sales to the consumer, and as for any firm the added complexity in terms of business and technical considerations. Obvious opportunities arising from the E-Commerce operations are increased sales, new markets, integrating other areas of the business such as billing and distribution, and offering more an more of the products online. Threats such as customer’s having a great deal of pricing information, lacking the ability to meet the order to fulfillment speed expected, technical problems, and the problem of enticing customers away from the firm’s traditional buyers.

With all of the designing that was happening in the company, it helped to shrink its profits. Lego City was a popular toy for children but the redesigning shrank the sales and attention the product was once getting. A worker of Lego said it well when he said, “Management was to blame, the same people who were doing crappy products then are making world-class products today” (Greene). Essentially the managers and higher up executives didn’t communication what direction the company should be going. They didn’t have a strategy to follow and tell their employees. With no clear strategy and communication in place, things were a free for all. This lead to the declining profits and stability of the company. Lego assumed that if the designers were able to create whatever they saw fit, that somehow it would lead to a breakthrough in the toy maker’s product line. However, this ideology backfired with high production costs and low profit margins.
Yet, although there was a notable increase in sales in 2012, the company income statement for 2012 also showed a rise in the company’s expenses. Total expenses rose from 13,065DKK in 2011 to 15,489DKK, suggesting both promotion and production of the new line incurred higher expenses for LEGO. This was a huge problem for Lego with its licensed products such as Lego Star Wars and Lego Harry Potter. The problem with this was that Lego was unable to see that their licensed products were its new bread and butter especially after they had evolved their standard Lego lineup into a hemorrhaging problem. The main issue with the licensed products was the fact that Lego in conjunction with their lack of accountability was unable to document their toy profits, and when those toys were most popular. With a little help Lego could have identified that their licensed toys, while producing huge profits, were only truly profitable for a short period following the movies for which they were licensed after. Had Lego been able to identify this trend and shifted production to its next licensed product, it would have had a much better shot at sustaining an ongoing growth pattern. This is because as kids in this segment like toys that are attractive and made using latest engineering and design techniques. Moreover, parents of these kids prefer toys that are high quality and safe to use. As this segment prefers quality over other factors, they do not mind paying a reasonable price for it as well. The office supply business is one of the most competitive arenas in business today. What started out as something so simple has blossomed into a very large portion of spending by not only businesses but also by everyday consumers. The typical office supply chain targets businesses, both large and small, and consumers which include the person buying an ink cartridge for his printer to the parent who is buying supplies for her home school. Teachers have also become a target with so many teachers now buying a portion of the supplies used in the classroom. Three leaders in the office supply arena are OfficeMax, Staples, and Office Depot. All three of these leaders have also launched their business on the ever expanding Internet. The question becomes whether or not these businesses are successful on the Internet. That question can be answered by looking into the look and feel of these websites and how the websites fit in with the business model of the brick and mortar store.
The LEGO Group organization is famous due to its flagship product – colourful plastic bricks that can be interlocked to form a variety of figures, and then disconnected again. These binding bricks originated in a wooden form when the company was first established in Billund, Denmark by Kirk Kristiansen in 1932 (The LEGO Group, 2012), and today’s well known plastic version was introduced in 1958 (Rosenberg). The company’s head office is located in Billund to this day, and The LEGO Group remains privately owned by Kristiansen’s family (The LEGO Group, 2012). They currently sell toys and teaching materials in over 130 countries worldwide.
The history behind Lego’s is an interesting story of how they came to be. The Lego was a great idea. The Lego is a fun, imaginative, creative, and educational toy! The story behind these amazing toys is interesting! The Lego goes way back to the great depression too! These bricks are cool to play with!
The key managerial problem which John Fahey is facing is to decide as to whom the e-commerce head should report, in the current organizational structure of NGS, so that the new position gives him enough freedom to leverage the growth opportunities of the e-commerce platform efficiently. How much span of control for the new head is required to cope with declining print media sales and build the right balance between allocating investments and revenue allocations across different product units of the organisation? He should also have enough exposure to build strong customer relationships and brand loyalty by improving the membership program using e-commerce.
Based on these concerns, retailers in the international marketplace have their work cut out for them. But through proper education of consumers, and the ever-expanding growth of the infrastructure in many countries, the future seems to be leaning heavily towards using the Internet for many needs.

Since its comet-like boom in the nineties the internet has attracted myriads of companies to do business on this boundaryless media. And the boom does not seem to stop. eCommerceis a catchword, which stands for a whole branch of new types of businesses that mushroomed up in the last couple of years. To begin I will tell the history of Lego. Master carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen opens the doors of his business in 1932, in the village of Billund, Denmark. He made stepladders, ironing boards, stools and wooden toys. His son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, started to work in the business at the age of 12. In 1934, Ole Kirk Kristiansen Company and his products now adopt the name LEGO, formed from the Danish words "LEg GOdt" ("play well"). After some time, they realized that in Latin the word "LEg GOdt" means, "I put together". At this time, the company also has 6-7 employees.
