Nick Hornby's High Fidelity
In Nick Hornby's High Fidelity, the main character, Rob, relates music to every aspect of his life. He utilizes music as an escape from his anxieties regarding his failing record store, relationship, and sense of self. Music provides Rob with the inspiration that keeps him going:
Records have helped me to fall in love, no question. I hear something new, with a chord change that melts my guts, and before I know it I'm looking for someone. (169)
Music prompts Rob to isolate himself, hold an unrealistic view of people and sabotage his relationships. Rob allows himself to get overcome with a feeling when listening to a song pertaining to that feeling. Many of the songs he mentions as his favorites or with significant meaning, relate to Rob?s life in that they have a lot to do with loneliness. One song in particular that Rob wants to serve as his eulogy, ?Many Rivers to Cross,? by Jimmy Cliff touches upon aspects of his life, such as loneliness, abandonment and anger.
The title, which is repeated throughout the song, relates strongly to Rob due to the fact that it contains the word ?cross? in it. Having just broken up with his girlfriend, coming to grips with his fear of commitment and finding unhappiness with his occupation, Rob has just crossed many boundaries in his life. He has taken on a sense of depression, which leads him to resort to anger all the time. The word ?cross? in the title can also relate to Rob?s anger. He is constantly ?cross? with his coworkers:
If I have to listen to one more word of his useless, pathetic, meaningless babble in my entire life I will kill him. When I let him go I am shaking with anger. (56)
When on the topic of Ian, the man Laura left him for...

...living in for the past few days has vanished? (60). At this point Rob acknowledges his defeat and realizes he cannot go on without Laura in his life because she was the one person he could rely on and talk to. With Laura gone, Rob resorts to a false comfort, his music.
Rob is so passionate about music because it is the one stable thing in his life. No one can take music away from him and it keeps him going. Music is what he uses to start conversations, make a living, fill up his apartment and to motivate him. The lyrics, ?It?s only my wind that keeps me alive? can be related to Rob?s music. The only thing that keeps him going during rough times is his music, his ?wind.? Music is a secure commitment, which will never walk out on him or die on him? music is his High Fidelity.

The lead singer of the band Train, Pat Monahan revealed in an interview that this song is about the death of his mother. In the interview Monahan stated, “ Loss of the most important person in my life was heavy on my mind, and
The song “Hurt” written by Trent Reznor and originally performed by his band Nine Inch Nails is a melancholy, haunting song. Nine Inch Nails’ version was recorded in 1994 and rerecorded and released by Johnny Cash in 2002. Each of the performers has a style, which some people would argue is at opposite ends of the spectrum of popular music; one is what is referred to as “Industrial Rock”, the other is country. Indeed, the musical genres are diverse; however, the song “Hurt” transcends the boundaries between old and new, hard and soft, and especially the differences and similarities between these men.
... themes of individualism and alienation. The chief value of living with music lies in its power to give us an orientation in time. In doing so, it gives connotation to all those indefinable aspects of experience which nevertheless helps us make what we are.
Hurt touches everyone’s life in some way from breaking a bone to a broken heart. John Randall and Bill Anderson show this in the song that they wrote “Whiskey Lullaby” and is sung by Brad Paisley and Allison Kraus. A woman had an infidelity and her husband left her but he could never forget her. This lead to him drinking too much and eventually killing himself with a gun because of the guilt that his former wife felt, she drank too much and eventually killed herself with a gun as well. Three of the literary devices that are used in this song are an oxymoron, foreshadowing, and a metaphor.
Many music artists choose to express themselves through songs for issues such as domestic violence and similar problems. ‘Family Portrait’ written by Pink and ‘Misery’ written by Maroon 5 are both songs that successfully reflect the issues of domestic violence throughout the pieces. ‘Family Portrait’ is a song written by pink in 2001 about a broken family and a little girl’s emotional plead for her mother and father to not leave each other. In line 4, the lyrics reflect the violence in the little girl’s house. As the song continues, in lines 9, 10, 11 and 12, it has become so deeply influenced by her mother and father. In lines 22, 23 and 24, the lyrics reflect the little girl’s attempts to escape the violence. The little girl repeats herself of the phrase “it ain’t easy growin’ up in World War III to symbolise the chaos in her house. ‘Family Portrait’ is an excellent representation of a household manifested with domestic violence. ‘Misery’ is a song written by Maroon 5 in 2010 is a more recent song about domestic violence. This song displays the themes of remorse and regret from the male role which is evident through the entire song. In lines 3 through 11, the lyrics metaphorically represent the emotional cuts that are left by one another. Later through lines 25 to 29, the lyrics talk about regret and giving up. The lyrics “so let me be” are mentioned twice to show remorse for the father’s past. These

Music adds tension to the story “Where are you going, Where have you been?” It's powerful in the way that it influences Connie. Music creates tension between Connie's sense of reality and fantasy. She daydreams about boys based upon love songs, not her actual experiences with them. In fact, the encounters that she had with boys proved to be much less appealing than the romance she has seen on television, radio, films, etc. Music is also powerful for Friend. He uses it as a tool to seduce, control, and entice her. The power of music is overarching and has the power to influence us all. It has the ability to shape our understanding and help us communicate. Joyce Carol Oates' “Where are you going, Where have you been?” effectively demonstrates this concept as she shows music's impact on popular culture and adolescents.
There were many jobs that Rob had taken during the years; with each job he has there is a lack of passion and drive which results in his lack of commitment. Even from the beginning of the novel, Hornby writes, “Later I could see that it was a false momentum, because it didn’t belong to me at all” (Hornby 87). In the late 80s Rob was a DJ at a “club”, he loved the music and the feeling it gave him and the crowd he played for. As a DJ, Rob realized that the environment wasn’t from him, but the music that he played for others, it wasn’t his. Th...

For many of us, one of the most accurate and effective ways to express the feelings that really matter to us is through music. We don’t only grow to attached to songs that are catchy, but also those with lyrics that we can relate to. It is not uncommon to feel like sometimes, artists can convey the way we feel better than we could ourselves. The storybook-like lines you read at the start of this page are a collection of lyrics
Emotional intensity, infectious melodies and passionate lyrics make for extremely compelling music; this album definitely had all three. The album’s melodic and lyrical magic that exuded from Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks left me mesmerized. When these sincere artists combined their vocal harmonies and surreal songwriting with their emotionally driven revelations of love, loss, heartbreak and turmoil, one of the ultimate classic albums emerged.
If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.
A person can do more than just dance to music; they clean, laugh, sing, cry, and make some of the greatest memories while enjoying music. Music can take us back in time to past memories, whether they are good or bad. It can make us think of different phases of our life. Just hearing one song can take us back years. It can make us think of a certain person at a particular part in time. The words and lyrics in songs have a way of relating to some people. (White) (Lyon, Suzanne)
Music can move a person in incredible ways, whether by healing, inspiring, saddening, or even angering. But when a song touches in a positive way it imprints a lasting memory of itself in the heart and soul. That might explain why some of the most classic and popular songs through the centuries are love songs. The creative ocean of love lyrics and melodies is probably as vast as a Universe and among the shining stars are two humbling songs that will continue to move the emotions. "Somewhere out there" and "Dreaming of you" are two musical creations that have planted a lasting impression in many people’s heart.
Music is an essential part of life because of the expression it allows people to have, its entertainment, and its therapeutic ways for the world.
