Statement of Philosophy of Education
My philosophy of teaching and education in general is very broad at this stage in my career. I am sure that as I teach in future years, my philosophy of teaching will change as I gain experience. As for now though, the following paper will describe the way I feel about teaching, learning and education in general.
First, I view learning as a journey the students take throughout their school careers and throughout life. I feel that on this journey, teachers are placed in the position to help guide these students to their destination, or at least help them on their way. This journey would include hurdles and obstacles that would be overcome and some that would be left for later teachers to try to help the students past. I know that as a teacher, it is important for me to help the students to truly understand concepts being taught that will help them in later mathematics classes and in their lives in the future. I also feel that a good basic tool for teachers to help provide students with that will enable them to be more prosperous in life is the concept of problem solving. This tool reaches far past mathematics. I believe that students are not just buckets that we, as teachers, are to pour knowledge into hoping that none leaks out. I do believe though that the teacher should reach for opportunities to help connect the content material to previous knowledge and experiences of the students.
As for the teacher’s role in the students’ lives, I feel again that he/she should be a guide for the students in their journey through mathematics. I feel that the teacher should help the students in their problems in the content and also be creative in teach...

... the students’ lives. I know too many people who never feel that their life will amount to anything, and if I can affect just one life and make a difference in that one, I will be satisfied. I had many teachers in my school career, but I can honestly say that my mathematics teachers had the greatest affect on my life. I see this in my personal life and in the way I teach and feel that teaching math should be handled.
One of my favorite statements about education is “Education is what survives when what has been learnt has been forgotten,” by B.F. Skinner. I feel that this is such a valid statement and one of the main reasons I feel that by teaching a child to truly learn and as they travel on their journey in life to pick up tools that will not only help them in their classes in school, but those that will help them be productive and happy adults.

I know that as I grow and learn as a teacher my theory on education will change and grow with me. I know that the best thing that I can bring to the table when it comes to being a teacher is the willingness to learn along with my students on what works best for us in our classroom, what is important to us when it comes to learning, and to change what needs to be change in order to have a positive learning environment for my student. This paper looked at the socio-economic status within society through the relationship between the different levels of classes and the effects of smoking, as well as the functionalist view of societal structure. Smoking is a common occurrence among the classes and is even more prevalent among those in the lower classes. Behaviours can be explored in more depth through the analysis of the social structure of society and their impact on individuals and groups. Learners can value of what they are learning as is relevant to their lives, present and future. Balance between curriculum and learning is reflected in teaching methods and assessment strategies which, I think, enable learners exercise self- awareness and responsibility for their personal achievement.
This essay is aimed to explore, analyse and discuss smoking in adults. Smoking is a public health issue as such is one of the major contributors to high mortality and ill-health in the adults which is preventable (Health and Excellence Care (NICE) (2012). The United Kingdom (UK) is known to have the highest number of people with a history of smoking among people with low socio-economic status (Scriven and Garman, 2006; Goddard and Green, 2005). Smoking is considered a serious epidemic in the UK and the National institute for Health and Excellence Care (NICE, 2012) stated that 28% of adults with low economic status are tobacco smokers compared with 13% of those with economic status or having professional incomes. Furthermore almost 80,000 people died in England in 2011 as a result of smoking related issues and 9,500 admissions of children died due to being second hand smokers (WHO, 2005). This essay focuses on definition of smoking, the aim is to underline the relationship between smoking and the determinants of health and then, the size, prevalence, and morbidity trend of smoking will be explored. Furthermore, some public health policies introduced to confront the issues around smoking will be investigated and finally, the roles of nurses will identify health needs the public so as to promote good health and their wellbeing.
Cancer of the lung was nearly nonexistent in the early 1900’s. By the middle of the 20th century an epidemic became apparent throughout the United States and the rest of the world. It is primarily correlated with the widespread abundance of cigarette smoking in the world. The tobacco industry has multiplied its production immediately prior to World War I. There was a typical 20 to 30 year lagging period between the initiation of cigarette smoking and the actual tumor formation in the lungs. Lung cancer is the cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. It occurs when cells in the lung start to grow rapidly in an uncontrolled manner. Lung cancer can start anywhere in the lungs and affect any part of the respiratory system. Most of all lung cancer cases start in the lining of the bronchi (health-cares.net, 2005). It is the leading cause of all cancer deaths in the world. During this time the tobacco companies would continue to say that cigarette smoking was not addictive and did not cause any type of cancer. Even with all evidence in the world today about tobacco causing cancer, Tobacco companies still remain the most profitable business in the world. Lung cancer is very common in both women and men. Women account for about 40 percent of the lung cancer cases in the world. Women who smoke are more than twice as likely to develop lung cancer as those of men who smoke (Tavor, 2005).
(House of Commons Health Commitee , 2009) There are many factors that lead to poor people having unhealthier lifestyles than those with higher incomes, for example, a lot of people do not have access to healthy foods whether because of where they live or just the fact that healthier foods are not as affordable for them as more unhealthy alternatives. Another contributing factor to unhealthy lifestyles is smoking. In Scotland, smoking prevalence amongst the most deprived tenth of the population is 43%, this is 19% above the national average and a massive 34% above the prevalence among the tenth most privileged. Personally, being an educator gives me a chance to have a great impact on the world. I have always enjoyed seeing the look on someone’s face when they make a new connection or learn something. I have many strong beliefs in the education process and many times feel that the needs of the student are overlooked. As a teacher, the students would be priority and that is the backbone of my teaching philosophy. I know that I am not very experienced and have much to learn. This I will strive to do throughout my education and even when I enter the teacher workforce.

Many years ago, Burr and Holliday performed a study that analyzed the dramatic difference in mortality rates involving lung disease in South Wales and England. It was determined that there was a significantly higher rate of respiratory disease and symptoms thereof in Wales compared to that of England. This specific study set out to find whether this drastic inconsistency correlated with the smoking patterns and social classes of each region.
Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student. I believe that every student has the potential to learn.
Almost 80% of the worlds smokers are lower middle class to lower class. (who.int) This statistic that was taken from the World Health Organization, W.H.O., shows that around the globe it is the less educated making these choices.
I want to teach students more than just the material; I want students to be able to apply skills learned in the classroom, to the real world. An important factor in teaching is to teach life skills as well as giving students the tools to survive in the real world. Teachers are like role models; at least we should look at ourselves in that way. Our job is to aid our students in becoming functional individuals in society and our experiences can be used as a guide. Taking an active part in my students learning is essential to me. Posing questions encourages students to think. This gives the students an opportunity to analyze, discuss, synthesize and apply the material in real life.
Along these two weeks we have been prompt to make a recall to our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: Was it because coincidence, due to life circumstances, maybe because family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer is, we have to face reality and be conscious that being a teacher does not only means to teach a lesson and asses students learning. It requires playing the different roles a teacher must perform whenever is needed and required by our learners, identify our pupils needs and preferences, respecting their integrity and individuality but influencing and motivating them to improve themselves and become independent.
...d a better understanding of differentiation, I have had several of my students tell me that I am the best math teacher they have ever had. They express their happiness by telling me that I teach math in a way they understand. They state, “You do not stand in front of the classroom and explain how to do the problem, give us homework, and move on to the next topic”. I take pride in this. I try very hard to help each of my students understand the necessary standards so when they leave my room, they are able to take a real-world problem and find solutions to them.
